In the context of Startups, everything has to be fast - in general. We need YOUR help! 🌳 🌱 🚨 6,000 scientists called the Nature Restoration law the most important law of our generation. At the final approval stage, EU politicians dropped it from the agenda. Now, it's up to us to call on them to get it right. WHAT HAPPENED? 👍 At the end of February, the European Parliament approved the Nature Restoration Law, marking a significant step towards the restoration of Europe's ecosystems. ✋ As people and businesses were celebrating, the process was derailed.  🇪🇺 After the law had been fully negotiated, a minority of EU member states suddenly withdrew their support, preventing the adoption of legislation designed to reverse decades of ecosystem degradation and to halt biodiversity loss. Now, the law has been taken off the agenda of the Council of the EU for not having the support of the required majority. WHAT IS THE NATURE RESTORATION LAW? AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? The law is a response to a harsh reality presented by scientists and the European Environment Agency: 👉 Around 80 percent of the EU’s habitats are in poor ecological condition. 👉 As habitats deteriorate, species’ populations decline. 38 percent of fish populations are in poor condition; bee & butterfly species are threatened with extinction; and farmland bird species have declined by 36 percent since 1990. 👉 In order to stop the decline, measures urgently need to be taken, such as restoring rivers to their natural state, reducing pesticides to protect pollinators, increasing green spaces in cities, and allowing natural forest recovery. That is exactly what the law aimed to achieve: 🖼️ By 2030, 20% of the EU's land and marine areas are to be restored, with a commitment to restoring all ecosystems in need by 2050. 🐸 By 2030, drained peatlands in agricultural ecosystems are to be rewetted, and new measures to protect our forests are to be introduced. 🏡 By 2030, there must be no net loss of urban greenery, with an increase in the share of green spaces and trees. 🐟 Over 25,000 km of river barriers are to be removed by 2030. Nature is our most critical infrastructure. According to the World Economic Forum, more than 50% of our economic output directly depends on nature. We have a historical chance to protect nature and ecosystems in Europe - but it is slipping away from us. 🇦🇹 The good news? There is still hope. A few politicians can still move the needle. Austria and Poland are perhaps the most influential. Let's call on them to act!  WHAT CAN YOU DO? 🗣️ Businesses, people, scientists, everyone - let’s spread the word to raise awareness and give the issue the attention it deserves. 📢 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭 - 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵! It’s enough creating sensational headlines with generational stereotypes about "Gen Z," "Millennials," or "Boomers." Few topics are discussed as frequently on LinkedIn as generational differences and the supposedly enormous threats they pose to the future. This is nonsense in three ways: 1️⃣ 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀. At least not in a statistically separable way. They were meant more as sociological phenomena, not as statistically distinct groups. This is important because it means that the predictive power we attribute to generational belonging is non-existent. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗱. Arguments like "The youth are getting dumber" or "Young people are getting lazier" are on very shaky ground. 3️⃣ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗳 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀. A study by Wong et al. in 2008 (already 6 years ago!!) investigated generational differences. Contrary to expectations, they found that Boomers (defined simply as an age group) were less socially connected and had less career focus than Generations X and Y. Additionally, Boomers were less motivated to advance in their careers compared to Gen X and Y. These generations showed more interest in fast-paced work environments. 🔍 𝗦𝗼, 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘇𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀? No, of course not! The differences are not due to personality or value differences but rather to different life stages. While the younger generations were more focused on career advancement in their early career years, Boomers were more focused on their approaching retirement. They use this information for creating new stories. This not only let's us create stories that are really relevant to our users but also enables them to participate in our journalism. Usually, these types of features are part of our subscription. We are offering it for free, just for a few days, to get a much broader sense of relevant topics and questions that are on people's minds.

unpopular opinion: the future of AI will only be as good as the people who’ll shape it. 🚀 last week, I organized an event for our Sigma Squared Society Berlin chapter together with Merantix. the goal: bringing communities together. ✨ plus, learning more about AI from the people who have been navigating the AI evolution since the VERY beginning (long, long before ChatGPT). Proudr afterworks are monthly career related meetings for queer people and allies. We organize speed or slow networking sessions and give an open stage to people wanting to pitch a topic. The ambassador team was used to meeting up once a month ahead of the event to catch up, work out feedback and prepare the following afterwork. Then we stopped. Why were - and are - these offline meetings so important to me? 📣 We encourage our guests to give us honest feedback in order to keep up the level or improve the experience at our events. Guess what? Queer afterworks are not always trouble-free. And it's okay - we are all humans and different. Combining several characters, experiences and sensitivities within a community can be a challenge. That's why we need to reflect these evenings together, try to find solutions to better cope with a touchy situation next time. Sometimes it is also good to think about the project as a whole: 👉🏻 Who can still stand listening to our welcome speech? 👉🏻 Who is dreaming of crushing our speed-networking-bicycle-bell? 👉🏻 How does the audience look like? As diverse as our community? 👉🏻 Why should they keep on coming to these events? 👉🏻 Do people rather develop a bound to the community through habit or new experiences? And last but not least - we work as a team. But we do not have time to chit-chat with each other during afterworks. How can we grow as a team if we are not getting to know each other? I gave an interview for EDGE Workspaces: "We need to foster young people to help building the future for each and every one of us." 🌱 When Hassen Amadori asked me if I'd be willing to have a chat about how START Berlin is actively trying to drive change in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, of course I said YES! 🔥 Coming from a small town myself, I know exactly what it's like to come to Berlin with no connections, no network, no friends. With dreams as big as the empire state building, my chances to succeed were rather low. It's not easy getting a foot into the "Berlin Business Bubble Door" when you don't know where to start. When I discovered START Berlin, that's when things changed for me. Because we are doing just that: Helping people get a foot in the door, connect with entrepreneurs, discover ideas, grow a network and engage in startup culture. It is the foundation of our free and democratic society after a dark period of terror, oppression, and violence. Since then, democracy, freedom, innovation, and openness to new ideas have enabled our society to enjoy stable peace, economic success, and prosperity for almost everyone. The European concept, as an economic and value community, continues to contribute to dynamic trade, the exchange of ideas, synergies, and nearly borderless freedom within Europe. Diverse opinions, visions, and ideas are essential to offer the best products and services worldwide through competition, market dynamics, and individual freedom. At ITONICS - The Innovation OS, we employ over 150 individuals from more than 17 nations across 4 continents. Our customers are scattered around the globe and use our software solutions to develop better and more sustainable products and services. Crude concepts such as national isolationism, xenophobia, ditching the euro for national currencies, or weakening international relations and alliances are currently on the rise and are of great personal concern to me. On one hand, this thinking (and often the actions behind it) jeopardizes our business, but more importantly, the individual consequences are severe: isolation, fear, restriction of personal freedom, and much more. I see a positive future in an open, democratic, free, diverse, and peaceful society. Given all the current challenges, the simple (and primitive) answers of the populists and agitators are certainly the worst. I hope for the democratic forces in the upcoming elections and for sanity and strategic foresight of political actors. Here's to the next 75 years of the Grundgesetz 🍾

Germany needs, on average, bigger and financially sounder coworking spaces, says coworking online magazine Deskmag - The Coworking Magazine in a survey. Too many coworking spaces in Germany are unprofitable. Why ? Many coworking spaces operate as non-profit companies, analyses Deskmag. The size of German coworking spaces seems on average smaller than the average size of coworking spaces elsewhere in Europe. Almost 70% of the coworking scene in Germany operates spaces less than 500 m2 big. This affects the range of offered services, hence their revenue generation. Meeting and event spaces are in high market demand, for instance. Smaller coworking spaces can't address this demand due to often too narrow operated surfaces. That being said, the statistical situation of the German coworking market can be explained, for a part, by the strong growth of the rural coworking offering, over the last decade, in Germany, which influences the overall numbers, as well as to the more decentralized economical reality of the country as opposed to other markets in Europe. Question: has anyone come across a report (or estimates) on the ethnic diversity of the German tech sector? I am looking for facts like these ... but for Germany: - In 2021, 7.9% of the US labor force was employed in technology. - White Americans hold 62.5% of the positions in the US tech sector. Asian Americans account for 20% of jobs, Latinx Americans 8%, and Black Americans 7%. - 83.3% of tech executives in the US are white. - Black Americans comprised 14% of the population in 2019 but held only 7% of tech employment. - The high-tech sector employs fewer Black Americans (7.4% versus 14.4%), Latinx Americans (8% vs. 13.9%), and women (36% versus 48%) than in other sectors as a whole.
