This colorful, easy-to-make drink — popularized by various bubble-tea chains and trending on TikTok in the spring of 2023 — combines matcha, a powdered green tea traditionally consumed in parts of East Asia, with strawberries, a beloved summer fruit. Served over ice, with distinct layering, the delightful balance of macerated fresh strawberries on the bottom, your choice of milk in the center and earthy matcha on the top creates a vibrant and harmonious flavor combination.

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Add strawberries and sugar to a medium bowl. Using a muddler, potato masher or fork, mash and thoroughly combine them. (If you want a smoother latte, pulse strawberries and sugar in a blender.) Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the matcha per package instructions, using ½ cup of room temperature water and mixing until combined. There should be no visible lumps of matcha powder.

  3. Step 3

Divide strawberry mixture among 4 tall glasses, then fill halfway with ice. Carefully pour 1 to 1½ cups of milk into each glass over the ice and strawberries. Then top each serving with about 2 tablespoons of the matcha mixture. You should see 3 distinct colors.

  4. Step 4

Stir to combine before drinking. The drink is best consumed through a wide straw.

Cooking Notes

I think the recipe works better in equal thirds. Not enough matcha as written, in my opinion. The matcha makes the drink. Otherwise, it’s just a lot of milk and strawberries.

One teaspoon of matcha for 4 servings?! This is matcha for people who hate matcha. Try a whole teaspoon per serving. And if you're in a hurry, replace the fruit and sugar with a spoonful of jam.

For those not used to making matcha lattes: (i) use a high quality matcha drinking powder not a "cooking" powder; (i) buy a chasen to thoroughly mix matcha with water, works better than whisks; (iii) matcha quantity should be 1 1/2 TSP PER SERVING (total of 6 TSP); (iv) water should be hot when mixing matcha, otherwise it will not blend well; and (v) to cool it, make milk ice cubes and drop them into the hot matcha, stirring, otherwise you will water down the matcha too much. Fabulous recipe!

I think matcha goes with just about any fruit. Banana, pineapple, mango, peach, pretty much any berry? Go for it. My personal favorite is passion fruit, but I'm not picky.

I teaspoon of matcha seems to be an error for 4 servings? A quarter teaspoon each? That’s just like milk with a sprinkle of matcha and in no way appropriate for any beverage called a matcha latte.

I have a chasen (bamboo whisk for tea ceremony) but use a tiny wire whisk to prepare the matcha. It does the job and is easier to clean than the chasen.

I didn't follow the recipe to a T because I just used what I had on hand, but it turned out well! easy enough to make and still have it taste good without following the measurements perfectly. Saved me some money on Starbucks this week lol!

Also the ice cubes are key to making it pretty: they act as a barrier between the colors, so try to aim your pour for the prettiest results.

This turned out fabulous so long as I added the correct amount of matcha as per the other notes! I ended up using defrosted frozen strawberries too and it still tasted great. Also I like to use a small mesh strainer to sift through the matcha. Keeps out all of the clumps! Another tip if you don't have a chasen is to use an electric whisk for mixing matcha with the water. It might end up making your matcha a bit bubblier but for me it's worth it given the ease of use.

Yummy. I reduced it to one serving. Might add a bit more sugar than 1 teaspoon as my milk was unsweetened soy, but maybe not.

Use jam or preserve in the winter

Any rip fruit will likely do. I used mangos and it was delicious!

Great drink and easy to make! I added a bit more matcha then recommended and it turned out perfectly.

Matcha floated poorly over unsweetened almond milk, but tastes great. Will make again.

Edited: JTT Pending approval Can any other berry be used in equal proportions? Blueberries, for example. Or other fruit such as peaches?

Delicious! I love the combination of the creamy oatmilk, matcha, and fresh strawberries.
