The Arena
The Arena is Sea of Thieves' PVP mode. It is separate from the game's main mode, Adventure, but like the Adventure mode, The Arena can be crossplay between PC and Xbox One, but this is optional.
The goal of The Arena is to gather as much Silver as possible. Players will play on galleons with crews of four, and can earn silver by defeating other ships, players, or collecting chests on various islands.
Action | Points Earned |
---|---|
Cannonball Hits (against enemy ships) | 40 Silver |
Delivering a Sea Dogs Chest | 1000 Silver |
Discovering a Sea Dogs Chest | 150 Silver |
Killing Another Player | 5 Silver (and five more if they aren't revived and go to the Ferry of the Damned) |
Letting Your Ship Sink | -1000 Silver |
When stating an Arena match, which is just 15 minutes, all players and teams will be at the Sea Dogs Tavern. When the match begins, it's a sprint to the first purple beacon where the chest is located. Whomever grabs it will be consistently shown in-world by a bright, purple beacon. As a result, everyone will be after them. Their goal is to turn the chest back in while everyone else's goal is to take the chest and turn it in themselves.
When heading into The Arena, players can create a closed team, or play with random players online. In the options, it is possible to choose if the random pool pulls from only Xbox One players, only PC players, or players on any platform.
Team | Associated Color |
---|---|
Azure Scout | Blue |
Flaming Jackal | Red |
Golden Chaser | Yellow |
Good Boy | White |
Lucky Rover | Green |
Regal Hound | Purple |
All players from all teams will begin in the lobby. Here, new cosmetic items, weapons, and supplies can be purchased for the contest ahead. From the lobby, all players will automatically be loaded into the contest on one of the six different teams. Then, it's every crew for themselves! Whomever earns the most Silver by completing tasks like killing enemy players, discovering chests, turning in chests, and more, wins the match and the associated gold!
Place | Gold Reward |

Fourth | 3000 Gold |
Third | 4000 Gold |
Second | 5000 Gold |

Tips and Tricks
- Use your microphone! Communication is key--but don't get too close to enemy teams. They'll be able to hear your secret pirate plots too!
- If you're not comfortable using a mic, use the up and down arrows on the keypad for some comms prompts and emojis.
- Toggle the "Crew Status Tags" button to see your crew's gamertags over their head from a great distance. This is a must as knowing your crew's whereabouts at all times is essential to communication and ultimately, success.
- Sometimes charging blindly into battle isn't the best idea. Wait for enemies to get off of the ship to dig up a chest before swooping in to take it out.
- On that same note, consider hiding aboard their ship for a surprise attack. Sneak on board while they're off the ship gathering up the chest and when things calm down, strike. Take them out and take their loot like a true pirate!
- Or, if you're the bold type, hop in a cannon yourself and take out the enemy crew pirate to pirate.
- When an Arena match begins, put all hands on the anchor — the first thing you should do is raise the anchor and then switch over to your assigned position, whatever that may be.
- Make sure everyone on your crew has a responsibility. It will make battles much easier if one person is navigating while the others are fighting.
- Always have a steady stock of cannonballs and planks on hand!
- Always have food on your person — your team shouldn't have to worry about making sure you don't die and one way to prevent that from happening is food. When you take damage, heal up quick so you can get back in the action.
- Focus on getting ships back to the Sea Dogs: yes, killing enemy players is great, but that earns you 5 Silver whereas turning in a chest earns you 1000 Silver. It's easy to see where your priorities should be in the Arena.
- Use the harpoon to grab a chest in the water instead of jumping off and leaving your crew that much more defenseless.
- On that same note, use the harpoon to keep an enemy ship at bay. If they're tethered to you via harpoon or vice versa, one ship isn't going anywhere without the other.
- If you have the chest aboard your ship, maybe consider running from a fight instead of risking it all (although we understand those riskier pirates who crave even more).
- If you take a chest, sprint (symbolically speaking, of course) back to the drop off point because once you've collected the chest, every other player in the Arena will know where you're heading. You'll want to drop the chest off before they can reach you.
- Use the Rowboat on your ship as a distraction. If you're near a drop off point and an enemy sees a rowboat leave a ship, there's a good chance they're going to go after it so send a decoy player out on it while the player with the chest sneaks on shore from the ship to drop off the chest.
