Captaincy in Sea of Thieves
Being a Captain allows you to own a ship in Sea of Thieves. Now when you play with friends, you can officially be the captain of your ship instead of whoever calls it first. Not only do you get a cool title, but when you own a ship, you can keep track of its stats with information like how much gold you've earned on it, treasure sold, bounties sold, days at sea, etc.
Buying a ship even gives you access to Captain's Voyages, which are only available once you've purchased a ship. So now you can perform voyages that have a little bit of everything. Wanna look for some ghost fleets, then loot a vault right after? You can do that now all in one voyage if it's a Captain Voyages.
Another great perk of owning a ship is that you can save your Ship customizations. The damage you take will also be saved, but you can repair your ship for a fee if you don't like the battle scars.
As soon as you become a captain, you can visit the Sovereign. They're meant to be an easy way to drop off loot and go back to exploring.
The Sovereign won't accept any treasure for The Reaper's Bones or The Hunter's Call. It's also important to note that when the Sovereign is given treasure that can go to multiple trading companies, they'll give it to a random company. But if the crew is representing one of the companies, the treasure will go to the represented company.
How to Become a Captain
To officially become a captain, you'll need to purchase a ship first. Thankfully buying a ship doesn't require much once you load into the game. In the main menu, select Play.
You can either select Adventure or A Pirate's Life.
To the right of all the ship options, you should see a tab labeled "My Ships."
After clicking My Ships, you'll be taken to another page allowing you to purchase a ship. Below is a list of all the ship prices alongside a list of how much they cost.
- Sloop: 250,000 Gold
- Brigantine: 375,000 Gold
- Galleon: 500,000 Gold
How to Name Your Ship
Once a ship is purchased in-game, you'll immediately be taken to another hub, allowing you to name your ship. As shown in the photo below.
After you name your ship, you'll be taken to another menu to verify the name.
If you are unhappy with your ship's name, you can always rename it by purchasing a Renaming Deed from the Pirate Emporium. When naming a ship, players must abide by the following rules:
- 20-character limit
- Cannot contain any numbers
- Cannot start or end with a space
- Cannot use certain special characters
How to Set Sail With Your Ship
Now that you've purchased and named your ship, you can now sail the Sea of Thieves. To do so, you'll need to be on the main menu and select the type of adventure you'll want to do before loading into the game.
Once you've selected it, go to My Ship, and you'll be taken to another screen with all the ships you own, as shown in the picture below. As soon as you select the ship you want, you'll load into the game as you usually would.
Captain Tutorial
When you first load into the game as a new captain, you'll wake up at the bar as you typically would and be greeted by the Captain Lord.
Once he's done talking to you, you'll be instructed to visit your ship.
As soon as you board the ship, the ghost of the Pirate Lord will greet you, and the first thing he'll do is make your ship's name visible for everyone to see.
After that, he'll continue to talk about the customizations you can do, and he'll be waiting in your ship's quarters.
He'll explain that the Captain's Logbook is now available for you and will document your travels on your ship.
As soon as you put the Captain's Logbook down, he'll explain that you can decorate your ship with trinkets. To proceed forward, place a trinket on a shelf.
Next, The Pirate Lord will instruct you to visit the Shipwright's Shop so you can obtain more customizations for your ship. Look for the Ship Customisation Chest when you arrive at the shop and open it. There won't be much for you, so you can close the chest as soon as you open it.
After closing the chest, The Pirate Lord will appear again, explaining how you can now purchase new items at the Shipwright's Shop.
Once you talk to the shopkeeper, you'll see a new tab labeled "Browse Sharon's Supply and Captain's Voyage Ship" select that.
You'll see all the items you can buy for the ship, including supply crates with everything you'll need before going to sea. The Captain's Voyages start at 400 gold and increase in value the higher you go. But to purchase the more expensive voyages, you'll need to be at a higher level with the respective trading company. Below are the prices for all supplies you can buy at the shop and a photo to go alongside it.
- Wood Supply: 2,500 Gold
- Cannonball Supply: 3,500 Gold
- Throwable Supply: 3,500 Gold
- Fruit Provisions: 3,500 Gold
- Meat Provisions: 1,725 Gold
- Bait Supply: 3,500 Gold
After you leave the shop, The Pirate Lord will again instruct you to visit him in your quarters. He'll instruct you to pick a captain's voyage to start your next adventure.
Now all you need to do is prepare your sails and venture off into the sea. The Pirate Lord will appear a few seconds after you set sail, and the last thing he'll do is pay you some respect and vanish.
How to View Your Ships Progression
To view your ship's progression, you'll need to press the resource button and scroll to the right until you're on the Ship's Log tab.
When you're on the tab, select Milestones, and you'll see another series of tabs to your right you should see your ship's Milestones.
There should be a Milestone for all of the trading companies and playstyles.
For instance, if you're focusing on The Feared Milestones, you can increase it by shooting cannons on your ship, or if you're looking at The Gold Seekers, you'll need to turn in more gold.
Once you've completed a Milestone, you'll earn Class for that specific company. Class is used to purchase ship decorations, so if you want a particular rug or bed, make sure to prioritize certain milestones over others.
An easy way to keep track of all your milestones is by selecting them and pinning them to your Ship's Log so they'll appear on the front page immediately. Or by Pinning them to your Captain's Log so everyone in your crew can see.
How to Begin a Captain's Voyage
To Begin a Captain's Voyages, you'll need to purchase them at the Shipwright Shop; they'll be under the Captain's Voyages shop menu.
Once you're there, you should see a variety of voyages you can do. Some may be cheaper than others, and to purchase the more expensive ones; you'll need to be at a higher level with the trading company.
Purchase as many voyages as you want, and once you have them go back to the quarters on your ship. Across from the table, you should see all the voyages you purchased on a shelf and a prompt to view them.
As soon as you select it, you'll be taken to a menu with all of the voyages you currently own. You'll only be able to choose one at a time, but once it's put on the table and voted for, you'll instantly start various quests for that specific voyage you started.
Who Are the Sovereign
The Sovereign can be found at each outpost, but they'll only talk to captains. They're usually in their own tent near all the main trading posts. If you're having a hard time finding them look for the highest pointing tent in the area.
Players can turn in any loot to them, and you'll be rewarded gold and reputation as you usually would. They're meant to be an easy way to drop off loot and go back to exploring.
The Sovereign won't accept any for The Reaper's Bones or The Hunter's Call. It's also important to note that when the Sovereign is given treasure that can go to multiple trading companies, they'll give it to a random company. But if the crew is representing one of the companies, the treasure will go to the represented company.
