IMX858

A compact image sensor for smartphone sub-cameras with all-pixel autofocus, high dynamic range (HDR), and various of other functions

Overview

The IMX858 is a compact image sensor for sub-cameras that is equipped with various functions equivalent to those of a smartphone main camera.
It works smoothly with image sensors for main-camera and provides many functions that previously have mainly come with image sensors for main-camera, like all-pixel autofocus to make it easy to focus even in dark environments and high dynamic range (HDR) to enable clear images even in high-contrast environments. It’s also the first image sensors for mobile to use our multi-camera sync system, which allows for smooth switching between cameras, contributing to a better combined multi-camera fusion shooting experience for smartphone users.

Features

No stress over focusing for wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telescopic shooting. Equipped with all-pixel autofocus

The IMX858 has an all-pixel autofocus function, which uses all imaging pixels as phase difference detection pixels. This allows it to achieve faster and more accurate autofocus, even for wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telescopic shooting.

Reference video (1): Accurate focusing without hesitation, even in a dark scene
Even if the subject is moving backwards from a nearby position in a dark environment, for which tracking was difficult with conventional phase difference AF, it is possible to focus smoothly in accordance with the movement when all-pixel autofocus is used.

A compact image sensor that can achieve low-noise photography in all environments from bright to dark

The IMX858 has a double-exposure HDR synthesis function, allowing it to ensure a wide dynamic range from bright to dark environments despite the sensor’s compact size. This means it can achieve images close to the naked eye in high-contrast settings as well as low-noise images in dim places. It can also shoot 4K-quality HDR video at 30 frames per second, making it easier to produce more creative content.

The first to use our original multi-camera sync system

Smartphones that have multiple cameras have faced issues like angles of view or chromatic discontinuity when switching cameras,, and increased power consumption when operating multiple sensors at the same time.
The IMX858 uses our original multi-camera sync system, which enables higher-speed camera settings and optimized sensor power supply control, allowing us to achieve smooth switching between cameras as well as low power consumption.

Multi Camera Sync System

Equipped with a multiplexed A/D mode to reduce noise during A/D conversion

During A/D conversion processing, the sensor reads the pixel information twice and averages the values, allowing it to reduce random noise such as quantization and circuit noise that arises with A/D conversion. This makes it possible to reduce the graininess and noise that can result from trying to capture to brighten a night scene or dimly lit indoor environment.
