The National Women's History Alliance designates an annual theme for Women's History Month. The 2024 theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” This theme recognizes women who understand the need to eliminate bias and discrimination from individuals' lives and institutions. How perfect! This is who we are and what we do! Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history. The actualization of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history, and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa. A few years later, the idea caught on within communities, school districts, and organizations nationwide. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March. I learned a new word in the last week: STEMinist A STEMinist is a feminist who supports women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). STEMinists believe that women should have equal opportunities and representation in STEM fields, which are typically male-dominated. They advocate for women in STEM fields, encouraging them to pursue work in these fields. I am proud to call myself a STEMinist!

Empowering women must begin during childhood. Starting at the age of 5, girls begin to doubt their potential and shift their self-image. As educators, we have the power to remind young women that their dreams are limitless. International Women's Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate women's achievements and instill a belief in young women that their potential is endless. Attended the 'International Women's Day' breakfast meet organized by DIFC Innovation Hub and boy oh boy what an event it was! From meeting so many lovely ladies, to sharing experiences, to listening to creative ideas, the sessions had it all. Key takeaways for me: 1) When you are the only woman in a room full of men, you represent all women, ensure your voice is heard, have your say 2) Support other women around you, together we can create an inclusive world 3) Ask for help from those around you, we need more male allies to be supportive 4) Learn to unlearn, relearn and upskill. May the learning never stop 5) Financial independence is key, be your own boss 6) Be greedy, never settle for less. Happy Woman's Day to all you girls out there. May we remember to celebrate ourselves everyday. I had an opportunity to share my thoughts on the interactive Q&A that was hosted. A little snapshot of the same.
