As a lifelong retail merchant, I'm going to potentially have a stroke if the retail media continues to report sequential month-over-month results as an indicator of anything. Year-over-year results are indicative of true performance, with the caveat of a shift in a key seasonal event like...I don't know, perhaps Easter...that will impact the natural trends in consumer purchase behavior. In good news, inflation appears to continue to be cooling...good news unless you are trying to convince your buyer that a price increase you took previously should not now be reversed. One of the primary aspects of the retail store leader’s role is helping associates maximize their own potential and performance. Your leadership training needs to address the issues of associate engagement and motivation. Here are four leadership best practices from MOHR Retail research that we’ve seen drive success: ▶Goals: When sharing goals, leaders should communicate both what’s “expected” (standards) and what “exceptional” looks like. The range helps associates know what’s required and what to shoot for in terms of service, sales, or procedures. ▶Communication: Every store leader needs to know to listen to the other person’s voice more than their own. Communication will feel a lot more connected and engaging to associates when they’re allowed to participate in the message. ​​▶Growth: Leaders need to develop people at all levels, not just the new people. Experienced associates want to keep learning and growing, and giving them that opportunity keeps them committed to staying with you. ▶Celebration: Celebration that is frequent and impromptu is important. Don’t just wait for the annual review or major milestones. Even small, unexpected celebrations can build confidence and enthusiasm. Don’t discount the importance of these essential interpersonal aspects. They can and should be developed as part of your store leadership training strategy. Not sure where to start? Article…”Store Closures Are Surging This Year”… CBS. Any HEALTHY Retailer should be closing +/- 5% of their store portfolio every year and redeploying the resources to new / better locations. An annual “Portfolio Review” that includes reps from Store Ops, Finance, the Leasing Team, Construction and even Mkting and Merchandise should annually review the P&L of EVERY LOCATION along with vacancy rate, $/ft, market demos, market rents, possible alternate and/or emerging markets, population trends of EVERY CENTER and potential new market. The goal is to develop an ACTION PLAN on each location… where can indiv. Depts. make a positive impact to improve business…and what locations need to “go away”… at the end of the lease or even sooner. These sessions can be tense and intense with some “gnashing of teeth” and soul searching but it ultimately results in a more profitable Retailer with resources available to redeploy to new, more productive locations. Crossroads can assist in executing Portfolio Reviews and even work with landlords on “early out” agreements…a sometimes contentious and complicated process that in-house leasing reps may not be equipped to navigate. Grocery Outlet recorded $1.04 billion in net sales during its first quarter of fiscal year 2024, a 7.4% year-over-year increase, the discounter reported Tuesday. Are you training your associates to powerfully de-escalate situations with agitated customers? During a recent panel discussion with some top retail industry leaders, we had an incredible conversation around the importance of ongoing training to ensure your associates and leaders know how to handle crisis situations. Susan Driscoll, President of the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) advised that retailers need to ensure crisis training includes instruction on how to cope, self-regulate, and stay calm. Your associates need to recognize that crisis situations are emotional, not rational, events. This will drive how they respond to people at various stages of a crisis. Jennifer Kajzer, Senior Assets Protection Director East Coast at Target, noted that her organization uses scenario-based training to give associates practice working through many different complex situations so they’re prepared to handle a variety of encounters. Both Driscoll and Kajzer emphasized that training also needs to include encouragement for associates to bring in support. If an associate does not personally feel comfortable handling a situation, they need to feel empowered to bring in support to assist them. Throughout the entire conversation, our panelists underscored the need for regular training and refreshers to ensure team members have the confidence and skills to handle complex situations productively.
