Early on in my career, I operated from the perspective that if I just kept my head down and delivered great results everyone would notice. I was wrong. Building relationships, in addition to producing great results, is critical to long-term success in any business. Networking is a key underpinning of that effort to build relationships because it exposes you to other professionals that you can help, and that can help you in your career growth. The key however is to look for what you can contribute to those in your network, not just what you can get from your relationship with them. People recognize a colleague who uses them for their own benefit and doesn't return the favor. Proactively helping others is an annuity.

I’m continually surprised by the number of industry professionals who have very narrow bands of expertise. The dynamics of modern retail make breadth of knowledge as valuable as any one role or project possibly could. My advice is to take on roles and responsibilities that build a wide breadth of scale, scope, Omnichannel and global expertise to make your value increase from a broader perspective and level of knowledge.

I would add the importance of having been educated at one of the top retailing schools on the fundamentals of retail merchandising. Have a deep understanding of the building blocks of retail is critical in my view for success. In addition, the core elements of digital merchandising and conversion rate optimization is also a valuable tool for improving your brand reputation.
