Updates

  • #OTD in 1942: The first successful launch of a sonobuoy from an aircraft was made from a U.S. Army B-18 bomber. By the end of October, the procurement of the expendable radio sonobuoy had been initiated when the Bureau of Ships ordered 1,000 sonobuoys and 100 associated receivers. Subsequently, the #Army Air Corps ordered 6,410 of the AN/CRT-1 sonobuoys, while the #Navy ordered 1,800 units. By 1943, full scale production had commenced in time for Allied Hunter-Killer groups to make full use of sonobuoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. Today, our Air Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems Program Office (PMA-264) plays a critical role in developing, acquiring and sustaining airborne ASW systems and sensor requirements across the #Navy, #MarineCorps and Allied Anti-Submarine Warfare enterprise.

The program gives college students a deeper understanding of where their passions lie. “My experience this summer has been fantastic,” said first year intern Michael Gordon. “Through this program I have learned extensively about international programs and worked with incredible people wo make it all possible.”

  • The training for operators and maintainers of the Navy’s E-6B Mercury fleet has launched into the 21st century thanks to new virtual 3D training systems provided by NAVAIR’s Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Program Office (PMA-271), the Naval Aviation Training Systems and Ranges Program Office (PMA-205), the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD). They include the new Multi-Purpose Reconfigurable Training System (MRTS) 3D Panel Trainers, interactive simulators that model and provide troubleshooting scenarios for various aircraft systems. The MRTS Maintenance Trainers and Virtual Checklist Trainers improve training, reduce risk and save money by providing hands-on instruction in a classroom rather than on the aircraft. They allow maintainers and operators to train for the mission, even when fleet aircraft are unavailable due to mission requirements. Maintenance is critical to sustaining the 37-year-old E-6 fleet, which flies missions critical to our nation’s nuclear deterrence. Better training = improved capabilities. • Navy Midshipmen get a taste of heavy lift – Each summer Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy visit Naval Air Station Patuxent River to see the test environment in action. These visits expose students to the vast array of test opportunities within the Navy and help them determine career paths. The CH-53 Heavy Lift Helicopters Program Office (PMA) 261 was very happy to introduce them to the newest U.S. Marine Corps heavy lift asset – the CH-53K King Stallion — currently undergoing digital interoperability testing.
