Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool delivered the keynote at the South West Transit Association Summer Conference and State Partnerships meeting today to amplify FTA’s support for small urban, rural and tribal transit providers. In her remarks and roundtable discussion with reps from the American Public Transportation Association, AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) in Ft. Worth, TX, she emphasized how rural transit is at its best when it connects people who lack other transportation options to get where they need to go. Supporting transit in small urban and rural areas and tribal communities is an important part of FTA’s mission!

We’re glad to see that the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is moving forward to replace its aging railcars. The Philadelphia transit agency recently announced a $724.3 million contract to buy up to 240 railcars to modernize its aging Market-Frankford Line [L] fleet, the most heavily used line in SEPTA’s system. FTA provided over 40% of the funding last February, awarding SEPTA $317 million through the Rail Vehicle Replacement Program. The federal support will allow SEPTA to improve transit accessibility, capacity and reliability, enabling its workhorse line to continue moving thousands of Philadelphians to work, school, activities and more every day. The new rail fleet will have enhanced features, such as digital wayfinding displays with real-time data, greater passenger capacity and handholds for standees. The new railcars are scheduled to be delivered in 2029, with full fleet delivery by the end of 2031.
