Chrome crashing when using with MySpeed
Thursday, 22 June 2023 00:00

Chrome, Windows version, as of version 114.0.5735 and later, is crashing when playing video with MySpeed version 5, 6, 2, 461. We have fixed the issue and have an interrim release that fixes the issue. There is a caveat however. We have not released a new version of MySpeed in years; as such our code signing certificate has long since expired. The net effect is that when you go to install the new release, Windows will put up an a dialog that would appear to prevent you from installing:

alt

However, if you click the "More info" button, you will get another dialog:

alt

whereupon you can click the "Run anyway" button and proceed with install.

We are investigating getting a new certificate currently. However, even when we get that certificate the Windows Smartscreen filter may still put up that dialog until we build enough "trust" with Windows. Suffice it to say, we went through this before with the last release and will have to go through it again.

If you are willing to proceed and try the new release, here it is:

Test release of MySpeed to address Chrome crashing issue.

If not, please use Firefox for the time being until we can get the code signing issue worked out.

One other minor issue is that you may not be able to install this new release until you un-install the old release (the installer may not let you proceed). If that is the case, please uninstall the previous release of MySpeed first, then install this release

MySpeed for Mac Browser Support
Friday, 15 November 2019 00:00

As of Chrome version 76, Opera version 66, Vivaldi version 2.11.1811.38, and Firefox version 68 (including Firefox ESR) on Mac, MySpeed for Mac is unable to detect video and control the playback speed in those browsers. These browsers are going out of their way, so to speak, to block software like MySpeed from working with them in an effort to be more secure. There is currently no work-around for this.

Here are some FAQs and self-help videos to get you going with MySpeed on Mac

FAQ and self-help video for disabling SIP if you have not yet done that

MySpeed for Mac installation and browser support

Browser support only (SIP disabled and MySpeed already installed)

Here's the current list of browsers that MySpeed for Mac can support:

  • SRWare Iron browser: (https://www.srware.net/iron/, another Chromium based browser) that looks and feels most like Chrome. You can sign into Chrome, and it will import all of your bookmarks and run your extensions.
  • The SeaMonkey browser: (http://www.seamonkey-project.org/, a Mozilla (Firefox) based browser) - note, there is an issue with Seamonkey latest (2.53.1) - please email support for the pre-release of MySpeed to work with this version of Seamonkey

Note: the SRWare Iron browsers are based on the Chromium project, however, they do not implement all the restrictions that Chrome implements to prevent MySpeed from working with them. They do however, use the Utility: AudioService task to play audio. This prevents MySpeed from working them as of their latest versions. However, this can be disabled via a command line parameter so that MySpeed will work.

You can launch SRWare Iron from the command line (the Terminal application on your Mac) like so:

  • SRWare Iron: /Applications/Chromium.app/Contents/MacOS/Chromium --disable-features=AudioServiceOutOfProcess

However, that is not a very good long term solution. We are providing a clickable Launchers that you can put into your Applications folder that will launch SRWare Iron with those command line parameters for you:

Download the zip file for your preferred browser and double click to unzip the file; the unziped application file can be then moved to your applications folder and used to launch the respective browser. You will likely need to right-click and select Open the first time you run them as you Mac will claim they are created by an unidentified developer.

Sorry for the trouble and thank you for your patience.

Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi for Windows not working with MySpeed
Tuesday, 22 October 2019 00:00

Chrome, Windows version, as of version 76 and later, is running its Audio Service in a separate, protected process. However, as of version 78 it is also running the browser process in a sandboxed container. This prevents MySpeed from working with Chrome. The good news is you can disable Chrome running the Audio Service in a separate process and from running the browser process in a sandboxed container with a command line parameter.
