The very first thriller from Rick Riordan Presents! Drawing from the darkest corners of Caribbean mythology, acclaimed author Sarah Dass crafts a chilling tale of magic, murder, and how far we’ll go to protect what’s ours—perfect for fans of Angeline Boulley and Tiffany D. Jackson.

Unlike the other residents of the small Caribbean Island of St. Virgil, Selina DaSilva does not believe in magic. With a logical mind and a knack for botany, Selina used to dream of leaving the island to study Pharmacology—until a vicious, unsolved attack left her father dead and her mother in a coma.

Now her guilt over her mother’s condition keeps her tethered to the island, relegated to conning gullible tourists with useless talismans and phony protection rituals. But when one of those tourists ends up at the center of a string of strange murders, the truth that Selina has been denying can no longer be avoided: there is evil lurking in the forests that surround St. Virgil. Another thing that can’t be avoided? Selina’s ex-boyfriend Gabriel, newly employed at the local newspaper and eager to put his investigative skills to use.

Desperate to put an end to the killings and claim justice for Selina’s family, these two former lovers race to find answers. But evil bides its time. And as long-buried feelings and long-hidden secrets about Selina’s family’s past begin to reveal themselves, only one answer remains—and it waits in the forest.

Endorsed by Rick Riordan, author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, now a hit series on Disney+.

Discover More Adventures All monsters and heroes have beginnings. This is mine. Circe goes YA in this unapologetically feminist retelling of the Medusa myth steeped in Indian mythology, a YA epic fantasy. This horror novel is a sinister tale of the supernatural, sisterhood, and the shadows that rule our darkest desires. Sometimes the prettiest Instagram feeds mask the darkest, and bloodiest, secrets. The twists and turns that will keep readers turning the page and no one will be able to guess the ending. To redeem herself, true crime TikToker Amanda Pruitt spends the summer in Colorado investigating a murder that seems open and shut. But when two crimes—one past, one present—intertwine, Amanda becomes the main suspect. All it takes is one spark to start a blaze. At Foxham Prep, a posh private school for the children of DC’s elite, a single rumor has the power to ruin a life. From the authors of the Tiny Pretty Things duology, comes another edge-of-your-seat... I did my part, BFF. Now it’s your turn. In this twisted game of cat and mouse, you will never quite knows who’s telling the truth, who’s playing games, and who is going to end up dead.

I ended up taking a couple of days to read the first half, and then finished the second half in one sitting. It's the first thriller in the RRP imprint and meant for YA/teen readers, but it's not super creepy, although it has its moments.

I liked the setting of a small Carribean Island (I have no idea if it's a real place), as well as the Carribean mythology that was incorporated into the story. I wasn't completely sold on the protagonist initially, as she made questionable decisions, but morally grey would be a good description for her. I was not a fan of her so-called friends or boyfriend, but as you learn the back story, it's a little easier to understand her choices. Still, when her old boyfriend, son of her pseudo foster mother reappears, it's easier to understand his side of things.

I thought the world-building (if you want to call it that--this felt like realistic fiction/magical realism) was well done, and I really felt the conflict Selina feels between the old-world magic and the struggle to survive in the world of tourism as this tiny island fights to compete with its more successful sister island. While I wasn't creeped out throughout, there were moments when I was checking around the corners as my house made some noise. The author did a great job of building atmosphere, although I have to admit I was more creeped out my human monsters than by supernatural monsters. But that too was part of the story.

Overall, I thought this was a great addition to the RRP imprint and I plan on checking out other books by this author.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5? I’m sincerely conflicted about this one. I think a lot of students will like the island, tropical setting. All the flora and folklore are undeniably fascinating. The legends and forest intertwine beautifully. I like the characters, but, here it is, this is definitely an adult trying to write teenagers. So the characters come off as adults, not as college freshmen. If you put the math of it to this, that means that this book is targeted toward high school juniors. I’m not sure they’ll feel a connection to these fictional ‘young people.’ It totally works as New Adult, I’m just not sure it’ll draw a high school audience, maybe the mystery and romance will save it for teens? Remains to be seen.

It Waits in the Forest is a novel based on Caribbean mythology, complete with bargains with an undefined, rarely name creature that trades wishes for lives. The main character, Selina, doesn't believe in the magic that pervades the culture of her Caribbean island, although her mother did - and possibly still does, but with her mother in a coma for the past two years, following the brutal murder of her father, it's hard for Selina to know what her mother would think about current events. Following the attack that left her father dead and her mother in a coma, Selina moved in with her mother's best friend, Muriel at the age of 16; at 18, she's still there, trying to find her way in the world, when a series of murders shocks the island. The accused murderer comes to the shop where Selina works as a clerk and mystic - playing on, but not really using, the magic her mother relied upon - seeking help for the spirit he says haunts him. Because of his visit, Selina becomes caught up in the investigation, which turns out to be far more personal than she could have imagined.

This novel definitely fits in with the mythology theme of other Rick Riordan Presents novels, although compared to the others I've read, it's a darker story, scattered with descriptions of murders and murder scenes, and more appropriate for older teens and adults than middle school students. It doesn't get too deeply into the mythology of the Caribbean, but does get in far enough to give readers a taste. At its base, this novel is a murder mystery, and it does a good job of leaving clues that will cause a reader to say "Of course it was that character" at the end, while not giving the murderer's identity away until then. There's also a fair amount of exploration of friendship and family, as Selina tries to deal with how her relationships changed, both with age and the change in her family life after she moves in with her mother's friend Muriel and Muriel's family.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Selina DaSilva is an 18-year-old girl living on the Caribbean island of St. Virgil with her mother. Her mother is a spiritualist who worked with her father, a forensics investigator to solve crimes in their town. Her mother’s intuition cause a man to become free even though the small town believed he was guilty of killing the woman. Selina’s father was killer and her mother is now in a coma. Selina is surviving by selling “fake spells and charms” in her friend’s mystic curiosity shop. She’s beginning to have troubling visions of her father. A suspect in a brutal death at a local hotel visits the shop where Selina is working. Selina decides to partner with Gabriel, her ex-boyfriend, to try to figure out if the murder is connected to what happened to her parents. Will she and Gabriel be able to find this out?

This intriguing novel kept me on my toes. The horror is written delightfully in this book. The horror and mystery written gives the novel the tension I enjoyed reading. This is a “tale of Caribbean folklore, herbalism and mysticism.” I enjoyed the novel.
