Circe goes YA in this unapologetically feminist retelling of the Medusa myth steeped in Indian mythology, a YA epic fantasy addition to the Rick Riordan Presents imprint.

All monsters and heroes have beginnings. This is mine.

Sixteen-year-old Manisha is no stranger to monsters—she’s been running from them for years, from beasts who roam the jungle to the King’s army, who forced her people, the naga, to scatter to the ends of the earth. You might think that the kingdom’s famed holy temples atop the floating mountains, where Manisha is now a priestess, would be safe—but you would be wrong.

Seventeen-year-old Pratyush is a famed slayer of monsters, one of the King’s most prized warriors and a frequent visitor to the floating temples. For every monster the slayer kills, years are added to his life. You might think such a powerful warrior could do whatever he wants, but true power lies with the King. Tired after years of fighting, Pratyush wants nothing more than a peaceful, respectable life.

When Pratyush and Manisha meet, each sees in the other the possibility to chart a new path. Unfortunately, the kingdom’s powerful have other plans. A temple visitor sexually assaults Manisha and pushes her off the mountain into a pit of vipers. A month later, the King sends Pratyush off to kill one last monster (a powerful nagin who has been turning men to stone) before he’ll consider granting the slayer his freedom.

Except Manisha doesn’t die, despite the hundreds of snake bites covering her body and the venom running through her veins. She rises from the pit more powerful than ever before, with heightened senses, armor-like skin, and blood that can turn people to stone. And Pratyush doesn’t know it, but the “monster” he’s been sent to kill is none other than the girl he wants to marry.

Alternating between Manisha’s and Pratyush’s perspectives, Sajni Patel weaves together lush language, high stakes, and page-turning suspense, demanding an answer to the question “What does it truly mean to be a monster?”

Sajni Patel was born in vibrant India and raised in the heart of Texas, surrounded by a lot of delicious food and plenty of diversity. She draws on her personal experiences, cultural expectations, and southern flair to create worlds that center around strong Indian women. Once in MMA, she’s now all about puppies and rainbows and tortured love stories. She currently lives in Austin where she not-so-secretly watches Mathew McConaughey from afar during UT football games. Queso is her weakness and thanks to her family’s cooking, Indian/Tex-Mex cuisine is a real thing. She’s a die-hard Marvel Comics fan, a lover of chocolates from around the world, and is always wrapped up in a story.

My 17-year-old daughter is a book nerd, she absolutely loves reading books and has read so far this year 15 books, she absolutely love this one.

This book was gorgeous, like breathtakingly gorgeous. I really loved the characters and the story; Manisha was an awesome protagonist and even though her story was traumatic, it was beautiful and powerful.

BUT, the ending (which I won't spoil) was really rushed and left way to many loose ends; it seems like a second book is coming... If you know that before you read the book, maybe it won't be as off-putting for you as it was for me.

Overall, though, this book was great! I loved the fusion of Medusa and Indian folklore.

Trigger warning: adult themes, violenceagainst women. A Drop of Venom is a retelling of the Medusa story combined with Indian folk tales of the Naga. The Medusa tale we're most familiar with has been sanitized, broken down strictly black and white, with Perseus as hero and Medusa as monster. It ignores the sexual violence perpetrated on Medusa. A Drop of Venom brings all of the violence against women that has been erased by the (mainly) male recorders of myths. Manisha and Pratyush are both monsters and heroes, human and other.

I loved how the story was told by 2 different perspectives. I just wish the was a sequel to clarify the end.

This book is super well-written and has an in-depth fantasy world! It explores themes of sexual assault and empowering survivors, other feminine-positive topics such as how to talk about menstruation, what constitutes a monster and how much discord stems from merely not understanding them or from not seeing justice/the other side of the story, and fighting brutal invasion and colonization.

You have two main characters who have been through a lot of trauma and who are just trying to deal with their own lives and needs while they are also looking to reform their corrupted kingdom. The various deaths throughout the book are horrifying and gory, and yet, to some extent, you can't help but see characters like Manisha as superheroes.

In general, fans of Rosalyn Eves, Damsel, and Nahoko Uehashi I think will find this to be a great dark fantasy from the already-awesome Sajni Patel!

The only thing I didn't like about this book was it ended. I wanted to know more. I will recommend this book to all my reader friends.

I read this book to approve it for my library. I was unable to approve it due to semi-graphic sexual assault scenes. The theme of women had it tough was apparent throughout the pages. The storyline was well written and I found myself on the edge of my seat more often than I count. The timeline jumps back and forth as it goes and some young adult readers might find it confusing at times.

I really enjoyed the book. I was sad that it was a bit too true to the horrors of the aggressive treatment of women to be approved to our library's collection. Also Trigger Warning for abuse and sexual assault.
