In You Have to Pick One This Time, Kaleb sits in on the emergency session with Alaric, MG, Lizzie and Josie. They discuss how they're going to deal with Malivore and how Hope will fit into their plan. During their meeting, Hope bursts through the doors, interrupting them, but shocked they're having a meeting without her and about the barrier spell on Malivore's cage. MG leads the meeting and his plan is to target Cleo, hoping they can have her inspire a way for them to free her and, by extension, Landon. He intends to use his and Kaleb's vampiric abilities to infiltrate Malivore's consciousness. Hope likes the plan, but he explains that it's because of the way she is when it comes to Landon. Admittedly, she is their best weapon against Malivore, but they only have one shot at this and they can't afford mistakes. Hope reassures them that she wouldn't jeopardize their plan and insists on helping. Alaric leaves it to vote.

With their plan set in motion, Alaric, Kaleb, Lizzie and Josie approach Malivore, though he's already aware of what they're planning. It's a head dive and Kaleb wants to go with Alaric; he could be heading right for a trap. Malivore reminds Alaric that he'll have access to his mind as well. With Kaleb and Alaric incapacitated, Lizzie and Josie will stand watch, should anything happen, they're to pull them out. Josie is weary and suggests this plan isn't a good idea. Malivore even warns them that since he's aware of what they're doing, they'll be going into his conscious mind as opposed to his subconscious. There he'll be able to torture them. Lizzie wants to call it off, but Alaric decides against that. He and Kaleb take the plunge and head into Malivore's mind.

Kaleb finds Alaric in what appears to be his old high school, East Point, as opposed to the darkness or any monster. He's there as Alaric's wingman, and together, they realize it's the night when they first met.. It's the night of homecoming.

Alaric attempts to find a way out of the fabricated prison but every door he tries is locked. Kaleb clearly remembers the night-he caught the winning touchdown and believed he'd be going pro if it wasn't for Alaric finding him. Alaric believes that football would have been the least of his worries, and he rhetorically questions what he meant by that. It's also the night he fed on someone, but he reminds Kaleb that it's also the night he tried to kill him, too. He chalks it up to the appearance of a vampire hunter with a crossbow. He concludes that Alaric didn't trust him, back then and today to come with him into Malivore's mind. Alaric admits that he's only ever tried to look out for him, but their conversation is stopped when a light appears down a vacant hallway. They follow it through into a locker room and straight to Malivore. Interestingly, Malivore has seen into their minds and this particular memory doesn't quite match up.

In the fabricated reality, Malivore shows Kaleb his memories on a projector. Kaleb did feed that night, but that was just the appetizer. Kaleb's memory comes rushing back to him and realizes that he attacked and killed a handful of students because of his uncontrollable bloodlust. The event was so traumatic that his mind repressed it. Malivore, however, intensifies Kaleb's bloodlust and Alaric attempts to help him and wants Kaleb to pull them out of his mind. Kaleb can't and explains that Malivore has a hold of his mind and isn't letting him.. Alaric attempts to grab his vervain, but Malivore has rewritten the memory. Before Malivore leaves, he tells them that if they die within his consciousness, it will severely damage their minds in the real world.

Kaleb struggles to fight his hunger and tells him that he needs to feed. Alaric tries to talk Kaleb through his heightened bloodlust. He wonders why Alaric never told him what he did, but he only explains that Kaleb didn't need to know. All that matters is that he can beat this. Kaleb lasts as long as he can but succumbs to the bloodlust and attempts to attack Alaric; however, a figure puts himself in between them. Kaleb feeds on Landon, who quickly recovers without injury. Both he and Alaric are happy to see him.

With Malivore still distracted, they leave the school and sit on the bleachers on the football field; the three of them catch up on missing events. He attempts to continue to tell him more, but Landon shuts him down, reminding him that he can't know since Malivore would know. Alaric assures him that Hope is on the case. Ultimately, Landon believes that as long as he's the only viable vessel, this only ends in two ways. He either dies, or Hope becomes a tribrid. Landon wants them to avoid the latter. Alaric reminds him that if they kill his body, then that would be closing the last door in or out of Malivore. He would be trapped. Landon knows this, but asks Alaric to do it. Their conversation is cut short when a bright white light engulfs them. They've been expelled from his consciousness by Lizzie and Josie. Back in the gym, Hope asks if they found anything out about Landon, but Kaleb tells her they didn't find anything.

Later that night, he and Alaric share a drink. Kaleb's still reeling from the repressed memories of killing those students, believing that he was better than that. Alaric reminds Kaleb just how far he's come. When they first met, he attacked him instantly and today he fought that urge; that is growth. Kaleb attributes that the only reason he was able to get the chance to grow was because of Alaric bringing him to the Salvatore School in the first place. He comes to the conclusion that he doesn't think he would be the person he is if he had known what he had done. Sometimes the truth can do more harm than good, at least until you're ready to hear it. Together, they believe Hope isn't ready yet for what they learned today and Kaleb backs whatever decision Alaric has to come.

In There's No I In Team, or Whatever, Hope brings together him, MG, Wade, Josie and Jed and explains that this was the memory that Cleo shared with her. She explains that if they can find a way to replicate the spell, then they can transfer Malivore out of Landon. Since MG pointed out that Malivore was trying to splinter them, she's adapting and open to collaboration. The team agrees to the plan and Jed questions if Cleo inspired any blueprints for the spell. That, however, is something they'll have to figure out. Wade inquires about Landon, but either way, they need Malivore out of him.

Kaleb heads to Alaric's office, upset for having lied to Hope about Landon, again. It's a necessary evil, though his attention quickly falls to what Alaric is unboxing. They're t-shirts for Movie in the Square. Their school still owes community service for last year's football fiasco. Alaric needs Kaleb and Lizzie to supervise the students while at the event.

At the Town Square, Kaleb listens to Lizzie talks about her and Ethan. Despite their common interests, she doesn't have that spark of romance. Unlike her, Kaleb is stuck shilling out popcorn to townies instead of rescuing Cleo. Lizzie reminds him that they're here so Hope and the others don't have to be. Lizzie siphons from him and causes the popcorn machine to explode spewing popcorn everywhere. Ethan rushes over to help Lizzie and Kaleb walks away, though discovering MG hiding and watching Lizzie.

Kaleb confronts MG for spying on Lizzie. MG is adamant that the human and supernatural work don't mix, and when they do, never ends wells for the human. He doesn't want Ethan getting mixed up with that again. Kaleb counters that he's jealous, to which MG admits to being. He wonders if her and Ethan's time is now while his time has come and gone.

Later that night, he and MG talk. He encourages MG to talk to Lizzie, though after the movie. Distracted, they quickly lose sight of Lizzie and goes in search of her, though they only find an unconscious Ethan. MG takes Ethan back to the Salvatore School while he continues to search for Lizzie who's been kidnapped by the dybbuk possessed Ryan.

Lizzie's held captive by the dybbuk who threatens to burn her alive but Kaleb rushes to her rescue. He attempts to bind the monster with a steel bar, but the monster's superior strength knocks him through a wall. Hope appears and performs the transfusion ritual on Ryan, transferring the dybbuk out of him and saves his life with Kaleb's vampiric blood.

He, Lizzie, and Hope rush Ryan back to the hospital. Lizzie confides to Kaleb that Ethan coming to rescue her was an epic move, and also thanks Kaleb for saving her. Kaleb is modest and admits that Hope was the one to actually save her. With Ryan saved, the three of them head back to the school, learning that Malivore has escaped, rather Alaric was forced to release him, with Ethan. Alaric comes clean to Hope about Landon.

In We All Knew This Day Was Coming, he, Alaric, and Dorian listen in on a dispatcher call, hoping that the human locals can find the missing students, though there's been no sign of them. Kaleb couldn't hear anything either. Hope enters Alaric's office and confirms that the witches haven't found him with the locator spells and Malivore must be cloaking himself. Kaleb wonders what they can do next, but Alaric tells them there's nothing they can do, yet, unless the wolves can pick up a scent and they have to wait. This is a hostage situation because Malivore still has Landon, Cleo, and Ethan. They can't afford to do anything reckless. Hope is still upset that Alaric just let him go and about how he kept the fact that Landon was alive from her. Dorian leaves, but believes that Hope is right. They should have told her. Alaric and Kaleb continue to keep their secrets, but Hope decides to take care of Malivore herself. She telekinetically takes a sword from Alaric's hidden weapons cache and goes hunting herself.

Eventually, he, Alaric, MG, Lizzie, and Josie arrive at the packing plant just in time to see the new creature fall, though it's no longer a monster. He was the missing student, Blake.

Back at the school, Alaric chases after Hope and he, MG, Josie, and Lizzie listen on their conversation from afar, the vampires using their enhanced hearing. Hope is adamant on turning, much to their surprise.

After Alaric leaves her room, he wants them to reconvene in the library, though only he and MG follow. He wants them to search the books for anything to remove a magical parasite from its host. They need to find a way to pull Malivore out of the people he's infecting. It's now a race to find a solution before Hope goes through with her plan. Kaleb doesn't want to do that. He's more concerned with Cleo's and Ethan's choice. Kaleb informs MG that he has to pick a side and MG believes he has a way to stop Hope.

MG leads Kaleb down a path in the woods. Kaleb is curious to what his plan is and what they're doing. Far enough out, MG explains the trolly situation and how they have to choose the lesser of two evils for the greater good. They have to save the greatest number of people and they have to make a choice. MG has made his and Kaleb has his own. However, before Kaleb can walk away from him, MG vamps behind him and breaks his neck.

After recovering, he eventually finds Ethan and he brings him to speak to Malivore, who questions how he found him. Kaleb explains that the magic candle he has eliminates sounds and smells. All he had to do was listen for a place that was too quiet. Malivore admits he was clever, but Kaleb woke up from his broken neck and admits he had time to think. Kaleb isn't here to fight and instead makes him an offer. Malivore accepts.

That night, Kaleb finds MG watching over Hope. MG attempts to apologize but Kaleb gets it. He almost went too far today but MG convinced him. Someone is going to get hurt, no matter what. He reassures Kaleb they'll find a way to save Cleo but Kaleb has already found one; Malivore. Kaleb punches MG in the gut with enough force to knock him into the ceiling and to the floor, knocking him unconscious. His eyes turn black and he produces dragon-like wings. Kaleb has another objective and takes Hope.

In See You On The Other Side, somewhere in Mystic Falls, he and Ethan, enthralled by Malivore, go from house to house enthralling townies with black goo. They're creating an army to split up Alaric and his students. The townies and Kaleb head back to the train depot.

Alaric successfully incapacitates the townies, though not without injury. Kaleb is his next opponent, and he's been upgraded by Malivore. Kaleb's eyes turn orange, and he breathes out fire.

Alaric takes cover as Kaleb attacks, toying with him. Alaric attempts to reason with Kaleb, since he's still worrying about him. Kaleb instructs him to leave, but Alaric refuses. He tells Kaleb that Malivore has Hope. Kaleb explains that he's the reason why he has her. Alaric continues to put his trust into Kaleb and reassures him that he believes in him. Kaleb doesn't want to do this, here, and Alaric wants him to fight it like his bloodlust. Alaric bets his life on Kaleb as his eyes turn orange, but Kaleb takes control, albeit temporarily. Malivore takes control of Kaleb. Malivore berates Alaric for teaching his students on how to be prey as opposed to predators. It makes his job easy but believes him to be pathetic. Malivore assures him that no one will remember them. Once Hope is dead, he will consume them all except Alaric so everyone will remember him as a failure. As Malivore attempts to kill Alaric, Hope surprises him from behind and stabs him. Hope quips about the dragon's soft spot, but falls to the ground, nearly unconscious. Malivore regains consciousness, learning that Hope's escaped and goes out to the train yard, planning to end her himself.

Malivore arrives just in time to witness Hope's complete transition. Hope instructs Alaric to take Kaleb back to the school and she'll handle Malivore. He grabs Kaleb and leaves to head back to the school.

In the gym, Kaleb revives from Hope's attack. Alaric admits that the cage is for safety. Kaleb is feeling like his old self, but believes he's still part dragon. That is unexpected for Alaric, but he tells Kaleb that all the townies are back to normal and they don't remember anything. It's finally over. He tells Kaleb that Landon didn't make it. Kaleb doesn't know what he was thinking, but love blinded him. It's a story Alaric and Cleo know well. Alaric hands Cleo the key to Kaleb's cage; he's speechless at seeing her alive and here before him. He questions how she's here, but that is a story best told on their first date. He accepts her proposal.

In I Thought You'd Be Happier To See Me, Kaleb finds Cleo in the art room. She's been in there all night. Inspiration strikes at strange times. Kaleb could use some inspiration for himself, considering how things ended with Landon, how he handed Hope over to Malivore and basically sold out the school with her. He's looking for a way to make it up to everyone. Cleo can't help Landon, but Kaleb is another story. She just has to figure out how. Kaleb figures that she must be good at forgiveness, because she straight up tried to murder Hope, making light of things, though Cleo is not amused with his comment. He apologizes, attempting to use humor to mask his true emotions. Cleo advises him that all he needs to do is be honest with him, just as she was.

Kaleb and Cleo arrive shortly after MG, asking about Alaric and Hope. Lizzie is furious to see him.

Kaleb's off the phone with Finch. He learns that Hope's not at the school, and he's obviously missed something big while away. MG explains that Professor Vardemus has explained that since Alaric is in a coma, their blood can't heal him enough to wake him. The human brain doesn't heal so easily. The doctors have also stopped by and told them that they won't know the extent of the damage until Alaric wakes up; if he wakes up, Lizzie retorts. Cleo has an idea. Like they reached her in Malivore, they want them to use a head dive. They might be able to find and bring him back. Lizzie admits that's a good idea, but doesn't trust Kaleb enough to do it since he sold them out to Malivore. She entrusts the task to MG, who accepts. As they depart, Kaleb admits he deserved that. Cleo believes that Hope could need their help if there was another monster involved. Together, they set off to find her.

Kaleb and Cleo eventually find where Hope was, though she's no longer there. The place reeks of blood and they find the charred corpse. Hope's gone. Cleo proposes they find her another way, and that this isn't their first date. Kaleb questions how she reminds so positive. She's overcome things that others would have believed impossible, and until recently, had to do it alone. Having him seems easier, no matter how daunting. Kaleb declares that he's not going anywhere and they seal their pack with an old fashioned kiss.

Later that night, he and Cleo make their way back to the hospital in time for Ethan and Finch's candlelight vigil supporting Lizzie, Josie, and Alaric. Finch embraces Josie in a hug and kiss as Jed plays his guitar. Wade gives them candles and lights them. Lizzie embraces Ethan in a hug, then MG before bringing them all together. Kaleb confronts Lizzie and seemingly reconcile their differences.

In You're A Long Way From Home, Hope walks down a deserted street in New Orleans, but comes to a stop. Hope quickly notices Cleo, who claims to only want to talk. She, however, is merely a poor distraction while the others get into position, which doesn't go unnoticed. With their cover blown, he, Josie, MG, Jed, and Ethan step out and they all confront Hope. Hope questions if her warning was too subtle, though they're here to help. Calling Kaleb a traitor, MG tries to rally them, to not let her get into their heads. Cleo tries to reach out to her, but Hope makes the first move. Using her magic, she blasts them outward. Kaleb recovers first, but Hope uses her vampire speed to throw him back into a wooden table, staking him in the process.

Cleo wakes up on the gym floor of the Salvatore Boarding School in a screaming panic. Their simulation in the Therapy Box has failed, again. The bell rings and they depart for class.

They sit in Ms. Featherwood's class as she calls roll. MG, Jed, Kaleb, and Wade sit in the back and continue to discuss their failed simulations. Jed prefers to die by decapitation as opposed to his heart being ripped out. Wade understands. In one of the simulations, Hope stabbed him in the eye, though it's a fake pain that stays with him. Ms. Featherwood scolds them for chit chatting during her class and continues to call roll, though they quickly return to talking, albeit a bit more hushed. MG wants to try another simulation; he just doesn't know why they keep failing. They're obviously missing something, though Kaleb has already figured that out. They're missing a leader because they were so used to relying on Hope, they never had a plan B. Their simulations are just a taste of what Hope will actually do to them if she returns and they're unprepared. Ethan asks if she'd actually kill them, though, startling them all. He's invisible, still having trouble controlling his powers. Kaleb, using Ethan as an example, believes they need to get back to training and enough with the simulations.

He, MG, Ethan, Wade, Jed, and Josie organize a training session to hone their abilities. MG and Josie take point and watch as the other boys get into position. Jed wants to follow MG's instructions, citing that Kaleb should create diversion against the fake Hope. Kaleb however, doesn't want to leave the take down to the B-team and moves in first, disregarding Jed. MG has Josie begin the trial and she casts a spell to create mini bursts of lightning. Wade is struck first and MG tells him he's dead and to walk it off. Jed wants Kaleb to vamp them past the lightning, but Kaleb ignores him, going on his own. Jed is struck next, and MG tells him he's dead too. Kaleb continues to fake Hope, dodges one trap only to be fake-staked with another trap. MG tells him he's dead, but Kaleb doesn't accept MG's ruling. While they argue, Jed encourages Ethan to teleport behind fake Hope. Still having trouble with his powers, Ethan barrels into Kaleb, knocking them both to the ground. Jed sticks up for Ethan, at least he's trying to use them. Jed continues to push Kaleb until his anger gets the best of him and he breathes out a fireball, narrowly missing Jed and Ethan. Kaleb runs off the field.

MG tells Kaleb that he was right. The squad has a problem and they need a leader, but Kaleb can't be that. He can't lead a team who doesn't trust him. What he did was try and save Cleo on his own, however, Josie did just that but with the team behind her. He's trying to fix his mistake, but MG explains he can't take it out on the team. Until then, he's benched. Josie awakens from the sleeping spell and explains to them that it was Lizzie and she's trying to do the spell. Kaleb gives them his key and they set off for the hospital.

Kaleb cleans up Alaric's office and Jed brings him good news. They got to Lizzie in time and Kaleb admits that MG was a good choice as a leader. Jed apologizes for what he said and Kaleb apologizes for the fireball. He admits there's things he has to work out on his own. Jed is sure that he'll get his new powers under control.

The phone rings and it's Ryan calling, though Kaleb doesn't recognize the voice. Cryptically, Ryan asks if it's the super squad and if it was, that there's an Argus on the loose, acting weird, off Route 50. He tells him good luck and hangs up. Ryan is finished with his past life and tells Trudy the truth, however she's more interested in more about vampires. She wants to know everything.

Jed questions the call, but Kaleb brushes him off; it was a wrong number. He thanks Jed for the training offer, but decides to train alone.

In Someplace Far Away From All This Violence, the following day, Kaleb searches the woods off of Route 50 for the Argus, unaware that Jed has followed him. Kaleb hears a broken branch snap and prepares to attack, though Jed appears before him. Jed has followed him to ask him the same question, wondering why he's out searching the wood, believing it has something to do with the mysterious wrong number from the previous night. Kaleb comes clean and explains that someone tipped him off that there may be a monster lurking in the woods. Though, Jed reminds him, Malivore is dead, their monster problem should be gone, too. Jed is adamant about coming along, but Kaleb refuses. Jed offers to tell the squad what he's doing, believing he's out here trying to gain favor, and he relents, allowing him to come with him in search of the Argus which is hard to kill and harder to get the drop on. Jed isn't worried though, since Kaleb is now sporting dragon powers.

As they continue to search the woods, Kaleb and Jed come across a mutilated corpse, believing it to be the work of the Argus. Their monster problem seems to not have died with Malivore. Jed suggests burying the person, but they don't have the time for that. They need to find the monster before it hurts anyone else since there's a town on either side of the woods. Jed suggests that they get a bird's-eye view to track the monster and hops on Kaleb's back, though he's still apprehensive about his new found dragon abilities, and shoves him off. Kaleb reminds him that he came here to kill a monster, not become one. Kaleb wants to split up to hunt down the Argus and walks off.

A short while later and unbeknownst to Kaleb, the Argus has found him and watches him.

Eventually, Kaleb is attacked by the Argus and struggles against the creature who has him pinned to the ground. The Argus chomps down on to his arm, but Kaleb is unfazed due to his new found dragon skin. Kaleb rips out one of his many eyes and calls for help from Jed. Jed finally arrives with a small pack of wolves, though they quickly run scared of the Argus. Jed takes the axe to the Argus' back but doesn't even feel the weapon. Jed wants him to burn the creature alive and Kaleb is forced to unleash his fire breath, killing the creature.

As night falls, Jed and Kaleb leave the barbecued Argus to the wolves. Kaleb thanks Jed for saving him, though Kaleb is the hero. He knew he didn't want to go full monster, but it had to be done. Jed gives him a little insight. He hates what he had to do to activate his curse. Though he doesn't elaborate on the details, he explains to Kaleb that he has to be the one who forgives himself for what he did. If he doesn't, no one else doing it will matter. As they turn to the corpse to bury, it rises off the ground, attempting to reconnect his severed arm.

In I Can't Be the One to Stop You, Kaleb attacks the mysterious man. Jed attempts to help him, but it's too late and Kaleb is already behind him, wings outstretched. He approaches Jed and tells him this doesn't concern him and throws him into the air and away from the two of them. With the man unable to defend himself, Kaleb unleashes his dragon fire.

Later, he's found on the ground with a tree branch sticking out of his side by Cleo and MG. Kaleb is nearly unconscious, but realizes he's been found. MG removes the stake, but Kaleb explains that the stake was what was stopping him. His monster side was taking over, and he couldn't control it. He had to slow himself down and buy Jed some time so he could get away. Cleo believes the act to be very noble and tells him that his plan worked. Jed and the man just arrived at the school a few hours ago. Kaleb, however, is worried that Jed took the man to the school. That man was the reason he was losing control and he's not the only one at the school that's half monster.

Kaleb is back at the school, recovering, with Cleo by his side. She wonders if the urge is still there. He explains that it's like a whisper in his head, telling him to kill the bandaged man. The closer he is to him, the louder it gets. He doesn't think he should stick around for much longer and resolves to leave to find a solution. Cleo offers her help, but he doesn't want her worrying over him. He wants her to see that he can beat this monster thing on his own, but she's already seen that with his actions today. Besides, she is allowed to worry about her boyfriend. He accepts, solidifying their relationship.

In Follow the Sound of My Voice, Kaleb picks MG up at a Two Moon Coaches Bus Stop. He thinks that MG wanted to meet me up halfway so they could have an epic road-trip back to school, but that is not the case. MG explains that Sheriff Machado left a voicemail on the school's line, believing they're experiencing some weird paranormal activity at their new house. She thought Dr. Saltzman could help. Moreover, locator spells indicate that Ethan is also there, but his mom thinks he's still in Mystic Falls. Obviously, he hasn't told them about his powers and thinks they could be glitching. MG believes they could help him. Kaleb has been off the squad for a bit, believing that he could have probably found someone better for the job. MG jokingly tells him that he's the only one with a car as they make their way to the Machado home.

MG and Kaleb make their way to Savannah to Sheriff Machado's new home. The whole situation is complicated to say the least, especially trying to keep Ethan's secret. Kaleb wants to keep it simple. They'll tell them that they're here to help with their paranormal problem and fix Ethan without them knowing. The only remaining problem is that they're two teenagers. MG agrees, citing they really need Dr. Saltzman, although he's still in a coma. MG has come prepared with Lizzie's illusion ring and disguises himself as Dr. Saltzman. Kaleb isn't convinced, as his and Alaric's personality and demeanor doesn't exactly match. Impulsive, MG knocks on the door, and he tells him to act more like Alaric would. Maya opens the door and MG, as Alaric, introduces Kaleb. They're both here to deal with their paranormal problem. Maya explains that they didn't believe it at first, but it's like there's an invisible spirit living in their house.

He and MG set up a séance as Maya watches them both intently. Maya wants to wait for her mother, since she and Dr. Saltzman dated, but MG opts to proceed. They call out to the supposed spirit, who is actually Ethan, and tells him that he should go back to where he belongs. Ethan shakes their hand, letting them know he's there. Kaleb pretends to get something and tells Ethan things are okay with Ben and Jed. They're telling him that the curse affecting them has been lifted. Maya has had enough with the charades and holds them at taser gun point. Her gut's feeling is telling her that they are not who they're pretending to be. Ethan, still invisible, grabs the taser from Maya's hands and Kaleb vamps to her. He compels her to believe all of this was just a dream and to go to sleep. Ethan appears before the two of them, telling them they shouldn't have come. He wants them to compel her to forget and leave.

Kaleb believes that coming clean was the right thing to do and he knew that MG didn't need him. Though MG just told him what Kaleb had once told him. Eventually, Ethan and Maya return, having told his sister about his supernatural powers. He's also decided to return to the school.

In Was This the Monster You Saw?, students are busy preparing for the party as Kaleb approaches Cleo, asking where he should hang up the banner. Cleo decides to do it herself using her magic, though, she quickly loses control and the banner falls to the floor. Kaleb tells her that she doesn't have to prove anything to him, but it was more for herself. She's still confused about what Aurora did to her and her powers, and she doesn't know who she is without them and hopes that it's not permanent. Kaleb's sure that once Dr. Saltzman returns, he'll be able to help her and believes that things will get better for them all.

Jed alerts the study body that MG and Alaric are pulling up to the school. They all turn off the lights and get into position. Jed and Ben hide behind the confetti cannon, Wade stands behind a large flower vase, while he and Cleo hide behind the table of food. Cleo questions if this surprise party is the best idea, given Alaric's current health. With their backs turned, Hope appears behind them, noting that Cleo is right and they're going to give him a heart attack. He and Cleo are surprised to see her and question what she's doing there. Though she's crashing their party, she's here for a business trip. She comes bearing an offer. Wade wants to know what the offer is, but Hope will only talk to Alaric, believing he'll be easier to manipulate.

After her meeting with Alaric doesn't go as planned, Hope meets with the remaining squad members. Wade questions about the potential death should they help her, but Hope reiterates that some would die, or it could be all of them. Kaleb, however, demands for her to get out while they talk in private. Hope quips that there is nothing super with the squad since she left, plus they're missing Lizzie, Josie, Finch, and Ethan. Turning to Cleo, she wonders if she can inspire a half decent question, but reveals that she is no longer capable of using her powers. MG and Alaric listen from outside the Great Hall as Hope continues to seek an answer from them. They need to act now if they want to save Lizzie from herself because she's also working with an ancient and mentally unstable vampire. Jed tells her they've already learned a few things about the gods as well as having met Aurora. Passing over him, she questions who Ben is. He explains that the gods are his extended family and he knows them all too well considering they cursed him. He can also provide her with much useful information about them. She wants to know more about his curse. After they refuse her deal, she takes Ben's spelled bangle and breaks it, ensuring another monster would be drawn to the school. Cleo is forced to lock him up in a cell.

After Ben is killed by Hope, Kaleb seems to regain his control for him to work with MG and Wade. Together, they prepare a bonfire and wait for the monster to show up. Hope also arrives, wondering if they've come to their senses. MG wants to work with her because Alaric has found out a lot about it, including that fire attracts it. After mocking them, the Protoclown appears behind Hope and bites her in the shoulder before running off. She collapses to the ground, and believes that MG lied to her. He didn't lie to her about anything. They need her help, just not this version of her. Hope covers her wound, taking some of the poison and fashions them into three needle-like weapons. Using her magic, she poisons them all to make them suffer. They all collapse to the ground, succumbing to the poison.

After the Protoclown is destroyed, Kaleb returns to the cell. Later that night, Cleo releases Kaleb from the cell, explaining that Hope has agreed to their terms, which included her making a new bracelet for Ben. Kaleb realizes there was no reason for her to be in there either, considering she was the one to save them. If he was so self-aware, he would have never locked her up in here. Kaleb admits he had help from the protoclown. It showed him the memory of what he did to her and it's kind of hard not to take the hint. Cleo tells him that she lived in the pit of Malivore for so long and most people cannot fathom what it's like to sit with that kind of stillness. However, the gift it gave her was knowledge of who she is. She is strong, with or without her power, even when she doubted it. He had even told her that, and yet he didn't believe it. Kaleb tells her that he believes it now, though hopes he's not too late. He's not, so long as he realizes she does not need a protector or a shield. In the future, she wants him to stand and fight beside her, not in front of her.

In The Only Way Out is Through, Wade and Rupert encode and everyone's powers for the Manticulum. He believes that he's been done dirty by Wade, but he assures him that it's only preliminary guesses, such as that MG's only slightly faster than Kaleb. They'll need to run some tests to confirm the stats. Wade also notes that, given his dragon powers, he has a plus-20 to defense and a plus-40 for offense. In a straight fight, he could definitely beat MG, provided that he catches him.

Professor Vardemus summons a battlefield for their practice session. Alaric and the others proceed with their simulation. Alaric believes that if they could talk to Lizzie, they can flip her back to their side. He believes their first move is getting her to safety. Her humanity tells her that she should listen, and though she believes they would be wasting their first strike, she goes with it. MG vamps to Lizzie though the manticulum calculates that Aurora would attack and kill him. His death turns Lizzie back to their side and she attacks and kills Aurora in a rage. Ben explains that Ken would attack Lizzie and she'd die. With her death, their probability of success drops to zero percent and they lose. Rupert finds this situation fascinating. As soon as Lizzie died, there was simply no move they could make that would lead to victory. He presumes there's a reason she is invaluable to winning. Hope now believes they have to save Lizzie first and wants to run the simulation again.

Rupert and the others run through several more simulations, each time they fail against the gods. Hope's humanity tells her she's going about it all wrong because they've already lost before they made the first move. Analyzing their enemies, Hope realizes the problem is that they're going first. They're facing them all at once and they should be forcing the gods to fight them. Hope declines the first move and Ben sends in Aurora to attack Hope first. Hope creates a barrier that throws Aurora off her feet. Hope sends in Kaleb, using his dragon fire. Aurora is killed and Hope has MG vamp to Lizzie. Ben has Ken attack MG, but Wade reads from the manticulum that he's just fast enough to save Lizzie.

Hope has rejoined the others with Ken, the last remaining on the field. Alaric thinks this is the point that Hope steps in, but Hope would rather send in her pawns first. Hope sends in Kaleb though Ben states that Ken would strike with lightning. Wade concludes that he dies. MG attacks next, though, again Wade explains that he dies. Ben advances Ken to Hope, who sends in Cleo. She too dies. Hope steps up to face Ken, though when pressed about the outcome, Rupert states that the manticulum calculates that she will still lose.

Running through another simulation, Hope has everyone attack Ken. Wade reads off the probability; they all die, but they do real damage against him. She moves in to attack next, though Rupert tells her that she's still not enough and he defeats her. Hope's humanity questions if she needs her help and she barks back, telling her to shut up. The others look at her, questioning the outburst. Hope wants more cannon fodder, questioning how many students there's at the school. Kaleb, however, is finished with the simulations. She's been running them into the buzz saw all day like they're expendable, citing that she only cares about herself. He declares this version of her isn't worth dying for and walks out with the others.

As Hope runs through another simulation, he, MG, Jed, Ethan, and Cleo come to her side, taking the next hits for her. Wade tells them that they score another hit on Ken, but he's confused about what's changed. Rupert believes that Hope is giving them all courage, a belief they can win. Ben believes his father will retreat and ultimately they win, attacking as one. Her humanity tells her that they can win, all she has to do is just turn it back on. She wants her to let her out before she loses control. Hope closes off her humanity once again. All of this isn't real, it's just a stupid game. They're all pathetic and just little boys role-playing war. She calls them all disposable and that they mean nothing to her. She addresses her humanity, calling her a liar and a martyr. The others look on, confused about who she's talking to. Her powers continue to grow unstable, enough that she tells them that they need to do something because she's about to kill them all. She pleads with someone to take her out and Alaric breaks her neck.

Kaleb finds Rupert and Cleo speaking in Alaric's office. He knows he's not supposed to be putting himself in charge of protecting her, but today wasn't cool. Cleo knows he's right and thinks that it's time to figure out what is happening with her.

In Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found, Kaleb takes Cleo to Atlanta for breakfast at a café. Kaleb assures her that they are the best in the city. Though Cleo has never been, she believes him and asks about their next plans. Kaleb explains that his family is having a huge cookout and even though it's their first date, he wants to introduce her to everybody, hundreds of Hawkins. Cleo goes pale with worry, though Kaleb is only joking. Since she showed him a bit of her story, he wanted to do the same and there's someone he's like her to meet. He believes that she could help her with everything she's going through with her magic. She questions if this friend of his knows they're coming. He only tells her that she probably does and not because he's told her.

He takes Cleo to where he grew up to meet his friend, Mavis. May to her friends. He explains that she's the woman who found him when he was in transition. He didn't think his family would accept him as a vampire and he would have never given them the chance if it wasn't for her. She is special to him. Cleo questions how she found him, but all he tells her is that Mavis has a gift. Like the others around here, he used to think she was crazy, but he's less skeptical since becoming a vampire. She wants to know how he turned, but that chapter of his story is not exactly first date material. He tells her that today is about her and she accepts that. Coming to Mavis' door, it flies open before Cleo has the chance to knock. She's already aware of Cleo and has prepared tea and his "awful" drink mix.

Mavis pours Cleo her favorite tea. Cleo would ask her how she knew, but guesses she's a witch, which most of the neighborhood believes. Instead, Mavis knows she's a witch because of her aura. Cleo questions if she's psychic, but denies this. Who she is, is Mavis and sometimes she can see the future, though never on purpose. Since Kaleb is special to her, she'll make an exception, if it will help her. Kaleb encourages Cleo to trust her, and she takes Mavis' outstretched hands. Mavis instructs her to close her eyes, to let her mind wander, and she'll see where it takes them. As Cleo holds on to her hands, the room begins to shake, enough to warrant Kaleb's worry. He tries to get Mavis to let go and for Cleo to open her eyes, to no avail. When Cleo finally does open her eyes, they're bright gold and she collapses on the couch. Kaleb asks what Mavis saw, but tells him that he should ask Cleo when she wakes up.

Kaleb cleans up Mavis' living room of broken glass as Cleo comes too. She's given him quite a scare. Though she tells him it's nothing compared to the one she's yet to give. Kaleb explains that she has Mavis' gift, although on a whole other level. Cleo has felt so rudderless without her magic, but now she's not certain she wishes to have whatever this is. Kaleb explains that she saw the future and she needs to tell him about it. Doing as he asked, she told him. Their school was in rubble. Mystic Falls in flames. Many innocent people will die if they do not stop the gods from returning to this world, including their friends. Despite how scary all that sounds, Kaleb is determined to have his second date with her, and climbs behind her on the couch, comforting her.

In I Wouldn't Be Standing Here If It Weren't For You, Cleo sits outside of Mystic Grill as Kaleb comes out with two coffees. His car has broken down from this trip back from Atlanta and they're waiting on a tow truck. Distracted, Cleo sketches out her vision before it slips away. Kaleb takes a closer look, admiring her artistic abilities, despite the climatic depiction she's drawn–Mystic Falls in complete destruction. This is the future she's seen. Kaleb is adamant that they won't let this happen, let alone today. A waitress behind them drops a mug, however, that's another portion of her vision that she's drawn on a separate page.

Eventually, he and Cleo make their way back to the school and Alaric requests for Jen to see them with Ethan and Jed in attendance. He hands her Cleo's drawing, inquiring if this looks like her father's handiwork. Lightning, fire, death, and destruction. She confirms that it is, though questions where they got the drawing. Cleo explains that she got a vision and Jen assumes that her half-brother, Ben, had awoken her father. Jed defends Ben, as they don't truly know if he's involved. Alaric points out that they do know this is the second piece of evidence pointing to Ken's arrival. They have to assume the worst and come up with a plan to save the school. Jen is sure they can't. Cleo is obviously an oracle and they see things that will happen. Even though she can see the future, she questions if she can't change it. Jen denies that she can. Regardless of what's to come, they have to try. Alaric instructs Jed to take Finch and clear out the school. Jed questions about saving Ben, but Alaric defers him, citing they need to focus on one crisis at a time. He wants Ethan to find MG and evacuate the town and Kaleb offers his assistance too. Cleo doesn't want him to go, but he reassures her that they'll make their own future.

While MG compels a bus driver to take a load of people away from Mystic Falls, Kaleb speaks with a cop. Approaching MG, he tells him that the cops are blocking off every road, so that no one can get in. The town is empty and everybody should be safe. Kaleb, however, has a weird feeling. He's never heard the town so quiet before. He muses that the apocalypse would be a little noisier. Regardless, they need to buy Hope time so she can get her mind right to face the gods. They split up to make one final round of the town. Kaleb runs into someone, learning that it's Ben. He asks what he's doing here which is also his question. Kaleb explains that Cleo had a vision, the town in flames. With that new information, Ben knows why he's ahead of schedule. This alerts Kaleb that Ben intends to set the town on fire. Ben explains that he's trying to save as many of them as he can because his father is heading to the school. He knew that they would try to stop him, and they would lose. He needed a way to keep them occupied until his father got what he wanted. Kaleb tells him that he could have just come to them and warn them, but Ben is skeptical that they would have believed him. Regardless, the town is empty and tells him he can go ahead and burn it down. He's returning to the school since there's no one in town that needs saving. Ben doesn't see another way and rips off a parking meter and swings it against Kaleb, knocking him to the ground.

Ben tosses Kaleb to Ethan and MG's feet in the Town Square, declaring that he's not going to stop and they'll need all of their friends to face him. MG instructs Ethan to get Kaleb out of there and he'll handle Ben. MG rushes Ben, but is easily thrown away. Jed approaches Ben and Ethan and has Ethan get both MG and Kaleb to safety; he'll handle Ben. Ethan grabs Kaleb and runs him over to MG and teleports them away, back to the school.

After fully recovering from his fight with Ben, he sits with Cleo as she watches over Hope. Cleo believes she's not done enough and questions if she's only delayed the inevitable. They're all still here; him, Hope, everyone. He says that she's changed a lot. He confesses to her that he was scared, too, today but he's just better at hiding it than she is. Oracles can't see everything. Cleo explains that she's not an oracle anymore, that Jen said changing the future she saw in her visions meant that she's becoming something else. But what, she doesn't know. However, the only answer they really need at the moment is why Hope hasn't woken up yet.

In By the End of This, You'll Know Who You Were Meant to Be, Kaleb helps prepare Cleo's spell, her magical boundary having been set to her exacting specifications. As Cleo walks in, he wonders if his attention to detail is her favorite thing about him. When she tells him no, he continues to flirt with her, but she won't reveal the secret. She knows he's worried about her, but she's confident her plan will work. The visions can't hurt her and they need to know what the gods are planning. Kaleb eventually agrees and Cleo positions herself within the magical boundary, opening a book and focuses. Her eyes glow yellow and she makes a connection. After she returns, he and Cleo learn that her vision left her wounded and a dagger appeared and buried itself into the wall behind her, terrifying them both.

He didn't want to believe Alaric, but Kaleb finds Cleo preparing to return to her vision with Ken, even after she got. Cleo believes he's here to stop her, but he's not. He just needs clarification on a few boyfriend rules. He's not allowed to make choices for her or to be overprotective, unless it's an emergency or that's something she needs him to be. However, she doesn't have to tell him what she's planning because she's afraid he'll overreact. Cleo confirms his query She drives him crazy and wants her to be careful and armed. He hands her the dagger from earlier. He believes that it probably has some god-magic since it's traveled from whatever plane of reality that was to their world. He thinks maybe she can use it there. She accepts the knife and he wonders if taking good care of her is her favorite thing about him. She still doesn't tell him but he reassures her he'll figure it out and he'll be right here should she look like she's in trouble. Cleo attempts to dissuade him, but he doesn't listen. He recalls that she said it wasn't just a vision. It was more like some kind of mental connection. That means he can head-dive his way in, which he will do at the first sign of trouble. Cleo doesn't protest. Holding on to the knife and the book as before, her eyes glow yellow.

After some time, Kaleb head-dives into Cleo's mind, breaching her and Ken's connection. She's collapsed on the ground, wanting to know what happened because she's bleeding. She barely comes too, telling him it's a trap as Ken appears behind him, restraining him with a stake to his heart. Cleo begs him to leave Kaleb alone. Ken believes his last offer was too abstract. Thanks to their connection, everything he does here affects the real world, so he makes her another offer. Bring him Hope, or he'll kill Kaleb right before her.

Ken needs an answer and forces her to decide by beginning to count down from three. Kaleb begs her not to do it, not to give him what he wants.

As Ken counts down to one, Cleo, tears in her eyes, tells Kaleb it's his eyes as Ken plunges the stake into his chest, killing him.

In This Can Only End in Blood, Kaleb finds Landon in Zied's bar, hoping that his boat makes other stops. He has to get back to school and back to life.

Kaleb ushers out the last of the monsters from the bar. They have the place to themselves, so no one's going to get jealous when he sends him back. Landon confesses it isn't an option for them. What Kaleb is asking him to do can only be done once. Kaleb doesn't understand. He's taken over the Ferryman's role. He explains what Lynn had told him. Breaking the rules of Limbo has a price. Kaleb is fine with that and agrees to pay whatever it is, but it's not up to him to pay the price. Should he change the delicate balance between life and death, a part of him will change–his emotions, his empathy–will start to fade. Until something he doesn't actually know. Knowing this, he can't ask Landon to pay this if it means losing his soul. He won't ask him to do that. Landon argues he's doing it for everyone and that Cleo needs him. The school needs a dragon to help win the fight. He's saying if they only get one shot at this, then he's making it count. Jed and MG rush into Zied's bar, the pair have been looking for Kaleb and are surprised to see Landon. Kaleb assumes they must be losing if both of them are dead. Landon tells the three of them things are about to get better, at least for them.

True to his word, Landon sends them back in time to join Lizzie and Hope as they face off against Ken. Lizzie doesn't understand how they're back, and Jed tells her it's a long story. Kaleb will fill them in once they defeat Ken. Ken is still confident in his abilities as this changes nothing. They will all die. Hope commands Kaleb for the first strike and he unleashes dragon-fire. Ken easily stops it, unaffected by Kaleb's assault. Lizzie vamps behind Ken and screams out for them to take the spear as she siphons from him. Kaleb, MG and Jed rush Ken and grapple with the spear, though their combined strength pales to Ken, even in his weakened state. He slams the spear into the ground, releasing a shockwave of energy that sends the four of them flying into the air. As they scramble on the ground, fear covers their faces as Ken has had enough. They are children and cannot kill a god. Setting his sights for Hope, he raises the spear and launches it at her. Unwilling to move, the spear stops just shy of her heart, surrounded in a yellow glow. Ken, as much as Hope, is surprised and doesn't understand what is happening and demands what treachery this is. Cleo comes and claims the spear for herself and clarifies this is her judgment as a Fury. Ken demands to know what she's deemed him guilty of, but she retorts for being a dick. His punishment is Hope and she vamps behind him. Turning to face her, Hope reiterates that it takes god magic to kill a god. Using the might of her physical powers, she kicks Ken through the air as Cleo raises the spear. Ken is impaled in the back by his own weapon. She hopes he rots in hell as he takes his final breath. Dead, Ken's body explodes in a fiery burst of light. Jed, MG, Hope, Lizzie, Kaleb, and Cleo stand in victory as the clouds dissipate. MG and Lizzie and Kaleb and Cleo embrace one another in hugs as they break and embrace everyone.

In Just Don't Be a Stranger, Okay?, Alaric calls the students to report to the Grand Hall for assembly. He and Cleo, as well as Pedro, Wade, Finch, Hope, Lizzie, and MG with all of the other students gather and Alaric thanks them for being there. He begins with how he made Ethan's mother a promise, just like all of their parents when they enrolled, that he'd care for them as his own. However, they're here memorializing yet another student and that is not what the school was meant to be. The school was founded with a single mission: To create a safe space for young supernaturals. He comes to the conclusion that, in reality, it's anything but safe and achieving his mission statement has proven impossible. He declares that he can no longer keep his promise and informs the students that the Salvatore School must close. Murmurs rattle throughout the students and Hope stands in protest, however, it does nothing to sway Alaric. He has nothing more to say, except that he's sorry, and leaves the Grand Hall, leaving Hope, as well as all the others in attendance, shocked.

Kaleb joins Cleo in the art room, wondering what she's working on, though her canvas is blank. Jokingly, he muses that it's minimalist. Cleo is frustrated. Her mind is cluttered with thoughts, but her hands will not express a single one. First it was her powers, now her art is blocked. Kaleb asks her to come to Atlanta with him. He clarifies for her. He wants the school to remain opened, but in the off chance it doesn't, he wants her to come home with him and make it her home, too. Cleo is taken aback but his statement–it is the kindest thing anyone has ever said to her. There is, however, one condition, though. He needs her to know exactly what she's getting into, warts and all. Cleo wants him to tell her, but he can't. He explains that they're all the heroes of their own stories and, if he tells her his, then he'll just end up spinning it to get her to say yes. He asks her to use her powers to see for herself. Cleo is hesitant if she's still capable of such a thing, but Kaleb encourages her to try and he's willing to open his mind, his life, to her. Only if she really wants it. Cleo takes his hand and he opens his mind to her.

Cleo recoils from Kaleb who wonders if what she saw was so bad. She slowly backs away from him, telling him that she's unaccustomed to her new powers, so she did not yet see his past. Kaleb knows she saw something. Cleo assumes it was their future, leading him to wonder if it was still bad. Cleo's demeanor changes and a smile creeps on her face. It was beautiful, she explains to him. Despite this, he wants to know why she looks so scared. Cleo tells him that they're not destined to travel down this path together and abruptly leaves.

Kaleb finds Cleo sitting alone in her dorm room. He's brought her easel and some paint. She wants to know what all of the stuff is for, and Kaleb tells her that there would be a lot of roadblocks they'd have to overcome. He figured that they would start with the one he knows about, her artist's block. She's amused about how persistent he is. For Kaleb, it's only fair because she's inspired a lot of people and he just wants to return the favor. Specifically, in two ways. First, he's not going to let some vision put him off to the best things in life. At the Salvatore School, they fight for the things they love. Cleo asks about the second way, and he unbuttons his shirt. He'll be her inspiration, as what's more inspiring than a dragon. Cleo walks over to him, definitely feeling something. She wonders if he remembers when she told him he was a good man. He does, but Cleo tells him she was wrong. Embracing him in a kiss, she tells him he's the best man, at least for her. As they continue to kiss, Cleo causes the paint to burst, covering the canvas.

Cleo hangs up her painting in the headmaster's office while Kaleb asks what she'll call it. She responds with "Passion." With her block gone, he wonders if she'll tell him about the future she saw. She can't, for the fear that doing so will change it. Despite not knowing what she saw, he wants to change it. All she tells him is that he will change the world, at least for many supernaturals like them. She won't say more than that. Kaleb only muses that she's sexy when she's being all mysterious. She tells him that she'll catch up with him in a moment, that there's something else she must do. This time, it has something to do with her future, and Kaleb leaves her alone.

At the start of a new semester, the Salvatore School opens their doors for the next class of supernatural beings to teach them how to be heroes. Wade plays red hands with Pedro until Caroline addresses the students, including him, Cleo, Lizzie, MG, and Finch, that first impressions last a lifetime. With the gentle reminder that many of them are immortal, she asks if Hope would do the honors. Hope turns and opens the doors, ushering in and welcoming the students home.
