About us

Tree Aid works with people in the drylands of Africa to tackle poverty and the effects of the climate crisis by growing trees, improving people’s incomes, and restoring and protecting land. Led by local people, our projects make sure trees thrive so they can provide food and incomes today, and protect the environment for tomorrow. We believe that tackling poverty and protecting the environment are inseparable. Tree Aid works in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mali and Niger, and also has an office in Bristol, UK.

Did you know? 16 million women collect the world’s shea by hand and depend on the income🌳 Often dubbed ‘women’s gold’ in many parts of West Africa, shea trees are where shea butter comes from. This non-timber forest product can provide a vital income boost for many women living in rural African drylands. Growing and caring for shea trees also helps to tackle land degradation, and protect forest areas. That’s why it’s one of our top trees for growing 🌱💚 Global Shea Alliance #GlobalSheaAlliance #SheaMonth2024 #WomenInShea

Last night we hosted a premiere of our short film about patron Adjoa Andoh's trip to Ghana to visit our projects earlier this year. A huge thank you to Adjoa for her continued support (and excellent drumming!), Wild by Tart for hosting us, Dreaming Fish Productions Ltd for their work on the film, Joseph Rochford Gardens Ltd. for providing gorgeous trees for the evening, WILDFLOWER FAVOURS LTD for their wild seed packets for guests, Prestige UK for the cookware they donated to our raffle, and to One Drum Africa for bringing the energy all evening 💃 Stay tuned for the public launch of the film coming soon!

Your Ecosia searches don't just help plant trees, they also create livelihoods for local communities 🌴 In Ghana, they support the work of partners like Tree Aid, who just shared some encouraging numbers with us! In 2023 alone... 🥭 345 people were employed in nurseries and nutrition gardens 🙋♀️ 1050 seasonal workers planted trees on community land — over 50% of which were women! 🌳 115 farmers planted agroforestry trees A big thank you to Tree Aid for their incredible reforestation work 💚 Learn more about our trees in Ghana: https://lnkd.in/dSvFCkrj

In Burkina Faso, increasing insecurity, conflict, and climate-related extreme weather events mean that more than two million people are currently internally displaced. Forced to leave their homes for places of safety, internally displaced people (IDPs) often face the difficult process of finding income, shelter, and friends within new communities. That’s why our projects in Burkina Faso work directly with IDPs, providing emergency food kits using non-timber forest products from the same value chains we support. By joining our projects, IDPs also develop the skills they need to grow food and incomes, while finding meaning from contributing back to communities who have welcomed them. Building a better future for all 🌍 We work across a number of our projects to establish #cooperatives, particularly women's cooperatives, to foster collective action, create networks and increase incomes. Through democratic governance and shared ownership, cooperatives pool their resources to solve problems, reach bigger markets with non-timber forest products, and access and manage land fairly and sustainably. 📍Images of cooperatives in Mali, Ghana and Burkina Faso. #InternationalCooperativesDay #CoopsDay

Growing incomes through solar power ☀ In some of our projects, communities use specialist machines to help speed up the lengthy process of turning tree nuts and fruit into goods to sell. But running these machines can be tricky, as access to electricity is patchy and expensive. One of our projects in Mali is tackling this with solar panels! Supported by Darwin Initiative (Biodiversity Challenge Funds), communities are now using the power of the sun to help power their machines, and grow their incomes from tree products 💚 See it in action 👇 #SolarPower #GreenEnergy #ClimateSolutions

"Each person has the capacity to do something, and if we can do something together, we can produce more. We have a shared purpose." Saidou Zoungrana is a farmer and president of the East Vohoko Forest cooperative in central-south Burkina Faso. For years, Saidou and his community have felt the impact of a changing climate. Droughts are longer. Temperatures are soaring, and wildfires are on the rise. But things are changing. All over dryland Africa, communities like Saidou's are joining forces to grow trees, restore hectares of degraded land, and innovate to solve problems like water scarcity. “A tree is like a human," he says. "If you take care of a tree and it continues to survive, it gives you fruit.” 📷: Saidou pictured at his home in Burkina Faso, and with his father Boukaré Zoungrana.
