TR2Gold Shark

Sharks are enemies that appear in Tomb Raider II and its expansion pack, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Different species of sharks are encountered across each of the games, as the levels they appear in are mostly located in different waters. In Tomb Raider II and the Golden Mask expansion the sharks seen are Great White Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks appear in Tomb Raider IV, and Tomb Raider Underworld marks the first time multiple species appear on a single game: Blue sharks in the Mediterranean sea and Thailand and Greenland sharks in the Artic Sea.

Development[]

Sharks are listed among the enemies in the Version 1.8 design document of the original Tomb Raider. They were to appear in Greece or possibly Cambodia, depending on what point of development that sharks were being planned. [1]

After making their debut in Tomb Raider II, sharks were to return in the sequel, Tomb Raider III, roaming around the area surrounding the RX Explorer in the level Antarctica. They were removed at some point however and were replaced by a lone orca. The orca too was later omitted before the final release.

Trivia[]

  • Great white sharks are seen in some of the promotional pictures for Tomb Raider Underworld, seemingly on the Mediterranean Sea level, but they do not appear on the final game.
  • Its possible that at some point in development there were plans to include Great Whites on the Mediterranean (that although rare, can be found there) and Blue sharks on the Thailand level only. Blue sharks inhabit both locations, so the choice may have been made to save on development.
