Information for people who don’t use Pinterest and/or have Pinterest accounts

Pinterest (“Pinterest,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) processes certain limited information if we receive it from our users when they create Pins on the Pinterest app. We process this information even if you are not a user of Pinterest and/or do not have an account with us (a “Non-User”).

About Pins and how they work

Pins are visual bookmarks that people use to save content they love on Pinterest. Users can search for Pins, save the ones they like and click on a Pin to learn more. Users can create their own Pins by uploading images or videos from their computer or mobile device. In addition to creating Pins with their own images and videos, users can save images they find online as Pins.

What information do we collect about Non-Users?

Our Community Guidelines do not allow content that reveals personal or sensitive information, including photos of private people that they don’t want posted online. However, it is possible that Pins created by users may include images of Non-Users.

How do we use a Non-User’s information?

We use the images in Pins, including images of Non-Users, to

  • provide the Pinterest service to users, for example, to recommend content;
  • to improve our services, keep our users and the public safe, and to protect legal interests. For example, as part of our efforts to improve our services, we use Non-User images in Pins, regardless of when the Pin was posted, to train our machine learning models and provide new product features like the body type ranges tool;
  • to personalize ads users see.

Legal basis for processing

If you are a Non-User in the EEA, Switzerland, or UK, we rely on our legitimate interests and the legitimate interests of our users to process your information for the purposes described above. More specifically, we rely on:

  • our legitimate interests in operating and providing Pinterest to our users, and the interests of our users in creating Pins on Pinterest.
  • our interest and the interest of Pinterest users to receive a personalized, unique and relevant offering, as this is why users come to the Service.
  • our interest to help users make connections in order to deliver a relevant and unique Service.
  • our interest and the interest of Pinterest users to secure Pinterest systems and fight spam, threats, abuse or infringement activities and promote safety and security on Pinterest.
  • our interest and the interests of Pinterest users to ensure our Services are used in accordance with our Terms.
  • our interest and the interests of Pinterest’s users in improving, promoting and developing the Service and in product features, such as Pinterest’s inclusive body type ranges, in an informed way.

How Non-Users can exercise their rights

Depending on where you reside, you may be able to exercise your rights under applicable data protection laws. These rights include the right to access, rectify, port and erase your information, as well as the right to restrict and object to certain processing of your information where we rely on legitimate interests to process your information. Please use this email privacy-support@pinterest.com or form (report policy violation; report exposed personal information) to request that a personal image of you is removed from Pinterest. If you are located in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you can also contact our Data Protection Officer if you wish to exercise any other privacy right. The email address you provide us with will only be used to identify you as a Non-User that has objected to the inclusion of their personal image on Pinterest.

If you reside in the EEA, Switzerland, and UK, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority of your country.

  • In the UK, the relevant data protection authority is the Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, +44 (0303) 123 1113, email: casework@ico.org.uk.

How long we keep your information

We keep your information only so long as necessary for the purposes identified in this Notice, which include providing our Service, or for other legitimate purposes, such as complying with legal obligations, enforcing and preventing violations of our Terms, to fight spam, or protecting or defending our rights, property and users. The storage periods are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Transferring your information and how we share your information

Your information will be shared with our families of companies. This means your information will be transferred or transmitted to, or stored and processed in, third countries (like the United States) outside of the EEA, Switzerland, or UK for the purposes described. We use standard contractual clauses (“SCCs”) approved by the European Commission for these transfers. For a copy of the SCCs, please contact us via the details provided in the Contact us section below.

We may also share your information with law enforcement agencies, government agencies, researchers, or other parties in compliance with laws, rules, or regulations. For example, we may get requests for account information from law enforcement authorities like the police or courts. We only disclose information in response to such requests if we believe that disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation or legal request; to protect the safety, rights, or property of the public, any person, or Pinterest; or to detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues. We may also share information if we believe it is necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily harm to a person in emergency situations. To find out more about how we respond to law enforcement requests, please see our Law Enforcement Guidelines. We may share your publicly accessible information with independent researchers who meet certain criteria, to combat societal harms.

While transfers to countries that don’t have an adequacy decision typically take place on the basis of SCCs, in certain circumstances, transfers can also take place on the basis of exemptions provided under data protection law. For example, sharing with law enforcement, in emergency situations where we learn that a person’s life is at risk.
