The Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters was the school that served as the home of the X-Men. Over the years, its student body evolved and expanded. Students live under pretense that they were merely students at Professor Xavier's exclusive school to keep their mutant nature a secret from the outside world. Where once there were only a handful of mutants living and studying at the school, over 100 students enrolled in the institute after secrecy and the mutant nature of the Xaviers School became public knowledge.[1]
Together with co-headmaster Sean Cassidy, Emma Frost would train a new class of young mutants, Generation X when Massachusetts Academy reopened as the branch of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
When Cyclops and Emma Frost took over the school, most of these students were assigned to small squads with a Mentor.[2] The repercussions of M-Day left many students without their superhuman powers, who left the Institute and the squads were disbanded.[3][4] Following the attack on the school during Messiah Complex, Xavier's Institute was closed.[5]
Most of the remaining staff and students soon relocated, first to Graymalkin Industries in San Francisco,[6] and then to Utopia.[7] The school has reopened under the leadership of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde as the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.[8][9]
Later the school relocated to Limbo to protect themselves from the Terrigen Mist.[10] After purification of mist, Kitty Pryde decided to move the school to the middle of Central Park. It was renamed to Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach when and Ororo Munroe became new headmistress.[11]
Following the death of Professor X during the war between the X-Men and Avengers, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magneto, and Magik founded a new school in the memory of Charles Francis Xavier: the New Charles Xavier School for Mutants to protect new mutants emerging all over the world and fight for mutant rights.[12][13]
