Quote1 They'll be days when you're lonely or scared, where you ask yourself why we did this? Was something wrong? But you are perfect, my baby. Know in our time here, we thought about you endlessly. How your voice would sound, your laughter, how you'd smile. We love you so much, Nathan. But owe you nothing less than the best possible future. And that is one without us in it. Quote2
—Madelyne Pryor[src]

History

Madelyne Pryor is a genetic clone of Jean Grey created by Mr. Sinister at an unrevealed point in the past.[1] She gave birth to Nathan Charles Summers with the help of Rogue who took the knowledge from a doctor who refused to assist during delivery.[2]

Madelyne Pryor (Earth-92131) from X-Men '97 Season 1 3 001

When the original Jean showed up, having escaped from Sinister, the other Jean was shocked to discover that she was a clone. Influenced by Sinister, she transformed herself into the Goblin Queen and unleashed Demons upon the X-Men, then took baby Nathan and went back to Sinister. When Magneto, Cyclops, Bishop, and Morph showed up to confront Sinister, the Goblin Queen overpowered Magneto and briefly managed to mind-control Morph into attacking their teammates. Jean confronted her clone telepathically, reminding her of her son and breaking Sinister's control over her. The clone and Cyclops retrieved baby Nathan, but Sinister escaped, having injected the baby with the Techno-Organic Virus. With no way to cure it in the present, she had to agree to let Bishop take it into his future. She then departed the X-Men and went to find herself, saying goodbye to the original Jean and taking on the new name of "Madelyne Pryor."[1]

She ended up finding herself on Genosha, joining the Interim Council. She later greeted the X-Men as they arrived on Genosha and was present when they offered Magneto the role of chancellor and leader of the nation's government. She was later present at the gala before going outside after getting hit by a psychic message. Going outside to recollect herself, Cable found her and desperately tried to warn her. Before his time-travel device jerked him back to the future, she recognized him as her son and could only ask why he was sorry before being vaporized by a Wild Tri-Sentinel Master Mold.[3] [4]

Trivia

  • Madelyne Pryor's first confirmed appearance is in "Time Fugitives: Part 2" from Season Two of the original series.[5]
  • While X-Men '97 purposefully keeps the point where Jean and Madelyne swapped ambiguous, both her cameo in the original show and her appearances as "Jean" in the sequel show use her hair being long instead of in a ponytail as foreshadowing it not being Jean. While unconfirmed, the series finale of the original show had Jean with this longer hair in costume, which would only be seen elsewhere with Madelyne in '97.
