Destiny Kanno says about WordCamp Canada last week — do attendees have any highlights to share?
Kathryn Presner says It was an excellent inaugural WordCamp Canada in Ottawa, Ontario! She ran the Training team table during Contributor Day and got three people started with testing the new Learn WordPress site (more details in the props section). They all did a great job finding bugs and reporting issues on GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/, and one of them also made some thumbnails!

It was delightful to chat with Cynthia Norman (content creator working on the Intermediate Theme Developer Learning Pathway course) Bud Kraus (participant in the recent course cohort on developing your first blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. She also gave a talk on Untangling Templates and had some great audience questions!

Kathryn Presner shares: Props to the three people who attended WordCamp Canada’s Contributor Day and tested out the new Learn WordPress site: Ryan Frizzell, Teuila Mau, and Keith Noseworthy. Among them, they submitted five GitHub issues, and Teuila also created seven thumbnails! Thank you so much for your efforts in helping to make the new site the best it can be.

Teuila Mau also shares: It was nice meeting everyone! The Figma thumbnail generator was very easy to use and thanks to Kathryn Presner for getting me started on GitHub

Project Thread: Learning Pathways on Learn WordPress

Project Thread: Content Maintenance Process Update Phase 1

  • We kicked off the What is Learn WordPress’s north star and content commitments. discussion the previous week and we’ll bring it up again in today’s meeting for further feedback

Contributor Updates

Wes Theron has been working on a video lesson about WordPress 6.6 and a lesson for the Advanced user learning pathway.  Things have been progressing nicely. He was wondering if there are any folks who would be keen to write scripts for the Advanced user learning pathway.  This is a great way to contribute to content creation as well.

Muhibul Haque worked on a thumbnail generator project.

Destiny Kanno has done some handbook page updates for online workshops and is working on recording an updated video for creating an online workshop. I’m also trying to gather feedback for the new content maintenance process project.

Sumit Singh is guiding new members and he can see some more Indian WP folks active in today’s meeting. Also, he is working on polyglot for my local language

Rico worked on the thumbnail. He helps newcomers go through the WordPress Learn paths and answer additional questions. He also tries to find out why WordPress Learn is hardly known in German-speaking countries. (For example, the Learn page on the German-language WordPress.org site is only linked in the footer). Try to find the person responsible who can change this.

Laura Adamonis is Working on handbook pages about writing newsletters and team updates, online workshops, guide program.

Cynthia Norman has completed the recording of all of the planned Intermediate Theme Developer Learning Pathway lessons. Lessons are in review and should be on Sensei soon.

Kathryn Presner participated in WordCamp Canada as a speaker, Training team table lead at Contributor Day, and Happiness Bar volunteer. Continued to help with the Learn WP remake, including coordination of testing, thumbnails, marketing, an Online Workshop, and launch timing. Ongoing coordination of the Guide program, and worked on the first steps to retire the Faculty Program, which involved access changes and some initial handbook tweaks.

Open Discussions

  • What are Learn WordPress’s north star and content commitments?
    • Wes Theron says he is teaching and assisting learners of all skill levels to use, extend, and contribute to WordPress. He asked Destiny Kanno could you clarify what you mean by Learn’s content commitments?
    • Destiny Kanno replied Absolutely! I mean when it comes to our content maintenance. For example, is Learn WordPress focused on the most up-to-date and relevant content?
  • Last topic for the day… – Are the meeting notes in its current form beneficial?

Open Discussions

Does anyone have an open discussion topic to bring to the team?

@gusa I have a random question coming out the recent Contributor Working Group chat. In our discussion about potential mentorship projects for the next cohort, the idea of do_action for mentored contributions once again came up. This was also something we’ve on/off discussed with the training team in meetings and related issues (for example). Noticing that issue was closed (yesterday I think?), I was wondering if that means there’s been progress (or possibly because that particular issue hasn’t been active recently).

In addition to creating training materials for do_action, it seems like other potential mentorship projects along with the goal to launch “On Demand Mentorship” would benefit from resources provided by the Training Team.

Curious if there’s been recent cross team/working group discussions on any of the above.

The team’s dynamics have changed since then, so let’s reevaluate. What is the value of having a dedicated board for topic vetting? Could we add back a column at the left of the LearnWP Content- Development board for issues waiting vetting?
    • According to @bsanevans Last year, SMEs struggled to find relevant issues to vet due to all topics being in a single column, leading to a backlog of 100+ issues. The topic vetting project board, with its categoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging. tabs, made it easier for SMEs to locate their issues.
Now, only 5 issues are waiting to be vetted, a significant improvement from last year. This change allows us to consider reverting to a single column in the content development project board. The backlog was primarily due to Training creating many new issues per release, but this process has paused, making the vetting board more manageable.
    • @piyopiyofox closed all Lesson Plans and Tutorials unless requested to be converted into a Lesson. The team could benefit from an editorial calendar for release-related content and a general checklist to vet other content for relevancy and priority.
    • @webcommsat consider using the Dev Blog model for idea planning and discussion, though the emoji thumb voting might not work due to more people involved in training. Using GitHub for planning could be effective. We can filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. the existing board for ideas and adapt some Dev Blog practices for training. This could also aid in cross-mapping and linking published items, which is increasingly important. I already consider training when reviewing new Dev Blog ideas and posts.

 Meeting Note Takers

Looking for feedback

We got some input from a Marketing team member last week. Please continue to contribute to this conversation by providing your thoughts on the post by June 13th.

The team has had an administration project board for a couple of years. With the majority of project tracking now happening on the team blog, team reps are planning on cleaning out the board, leaving just meeting agenda and handbook feedback items. Are any team members still actively using this board?

  • Faculty program retirement

We’d like to share a proposal to retire the Faculty program in its current form. This proposal was already discussed within the Faculty group, and since the overall consensus was to go ahead with retiring the program, we’re now sharing the proposal with the whole team before we move forward with any of the suggested steps.

@bsanevans has proposed the below plan to the team and team agreed on that. Below are the @bsanevans proposal:

Firstly, we wanted to give a huge thank you for all your hard work in keeping things running so smoothly. Thanks to you all, we’ve been able to set up team processes, catch up on a backlog of tasks, and set ourselves up for future success.

Over the past while, we’ve observed that the Faculty program is due for a rethink. For example, many folks in the Faculty group are no longer active on the team at all, and there are many roles that are under-used and difficult to recruit for. As well, there’s a level of administrative overhead that’s somewhat complicated, and having to be part of the Faculty program may be seen by contributors as a barrier to doing certain types of work on the team. Finally, the now-established Guide Program serves as a welcoming path for people to get more involved in the team.

We’ve been thinking of ways to streamline things to make the team run more efficiently. In turn, this should free up time to focus more on higher-impact areas.

In thinking things over, we’d like to suggest retiring the Faculty program in its current form. We propose the following steps:

  • Add a new area in the handbook, outlining the history of Learn.WordPress.org and the Training team. This section would also include the names of past team reps and Faculty members, so that folks’ contributions are visible and recognized in the context of the Training team’s history.
  • Shift the work done by the current Faculty Admin group to a smaller group of administrators, starting with the team reps. Additional admins will be added over time, while the current admin needs of the team are reassessed. We will likely look for Training team members who have made consistent contributions over the last 6-12 months.
  • Update the handbook to remove the Faculty Program section.
  • Feedback on sharing experienced content creator processes with the team

@psykro and @west7 have identified a need for content creators to view their content creation process. They plan to add the following links as additional resources to the “Create a Lesson” page. They are also considering creating an informal video recording of these processes to support visual learners. We welcome any feedback or concerns you might have regarding this plan.

Looking for volunteers

  • Tutorial deprecation

To simplify Learn.WordPress.org, two content types will be gradually phased out: tutorials and lesson plans. As a first step, before launching the new site some outdated tutorials are going to be unpublished. A redirect will be added for each one, to send visitors to the most relevant alternative content.

@west7 and @psykro have already started going through all existing tutorials to note whether they should be kept, deprecated (unpublished), or updated.

We are looking for volunteers to continue going through the rest of the tutorials to indicate the status of each (keep/deprecate/update) and a potential redirect URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org. If you are available, please make edits directly to the spreadsheet.

Note that some of this content is in languages other than English, but you could use an online translation tool to translate the tutorial title to help determine whether it’s still relevant or has a more up-to-date equivalent tutorial or lesson.

  • Would love everyone’s feedback with the introduction of the Learning Pathways.
    • What content are we obligated to leave on Learn? Ex. Classic editor
    • Until what version do we need to support?

@bsanevans suggests revisiting Learning Pathways annually to ensure they remain current. He believes that content irrelevant to the BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor should be removed, noting that the classic editor was removed from the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. over five years ago. By reviewing WordPress version usage stats, and focusing on content for versions 6.4 and 6.5, which cover over 70% of installs, we can keep Learn up to date with the majority of use cases.

@psykro suggests yearly updates for Learning Pathways and every six months for newer features like the Site Editor and Interactivity APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. until they stabilize. He agrees that content related to features removed from the core should be removed. For WordPress versions, he proposes using a 5% usage baseline to determine content support, ensuring we cover versions 6.4 and 6.5 but also older versions if their usage exceeds 5%.

@abhanonstopnewsuk would like your input to help clarify what to focus on. Here is the Slack conversation.

Training Team Mission

The WordPress training team helps people learn to use, extend, and contribute to WordPress through synchronous and asynchronous learning as well as downloadable lesson plans for instructors to use in live environments, via learn.wordpress.org.

I’m new to the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Please walk through our brand-new Onboarding Program. This will give you an overview of the team, help you set up the accounts you need to contribute, and even walk you through your first contribution!

We expect the onboarding program above to take 30-60 minutes. Once you’ve completed onboarding, jump into these other activities to continue contributing!

Review published content and submit feedback

WordPress software continues to grow and new features get added all the time. Reviewing published content and updating content is important in keeping the Learn WordPress website current. Follow the team guide about reviewing published content to leave feedback about any content below. (Reviewing older content would be helpful!)

Submit new content topic ideas

Have a look through the Learn WordPress website. Are there any topics you feel would be great to add to the website? Come add your topic ideas to our GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ repository from the button below:

I have experience working with the Training Team!

Thanks for joining! Depending on your interests, there are a few ways you can get involved. For each of the tasks below, the team handbook should help you with process specifics. But if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Thumbnail Creation Project

In preparation for the relaunch of Learn.WordPress.org and Learning Pathways scheduled for July, we need to create a large quantity of small graphics – called thumbnails – to serve as featured images for each course, lesson, and tutorial. This will create a visually appealing site that will entice learners to dive in and get started on their learning journey.

Content Creation

Are you interested in creating content? If so, then creating content related to WordPress 6.5, WordPress 6.5.2 and WordPress 6.5.3 releases are our priority today.

Start by searching for a piece of content you’d like to work on in either the 6.5 project board , 6.5.2 project board, or 6.5.3 project board. Once found, comment on the GitHub issue so that we can assign it to you.

Content Translation

Are you interested in translating content? If so, then translating content related to the Localization Foundation project is our priority today. Do you speak Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Hindi, or Italian? Come help us localize content for either these five or our 8 other languages. There are a few courses about onboarding contributors specifically that will help in the WordPress mentorship program:

You can learn how to get started in content localization in this handbook page.

Content Reviews

Are you interested in editing content? If so, then reviewing content waiting to be published is our priority today.

Start by finding a piece of content to review in our content development board. This GitHub view has filtered all content waiting for reviews before it is published. Follow the team’s Guidelines for reviewing content and leave your reviews right there in GitHub.

Subject Matter Expert

subject-matter expert is someone who has extensive knowledge in a particular field or area and can provide advice, guidance, and direction in that subject. If you would like to help vet topics, please visit the Vetting Topic Ideas handbook page.

Triage Developer Issues

Are you a developer interested in working on issues for the Learn website? If so, then working through our Website Development project board is our priority today.

Start by reviewing issues “In Review”. Any help you can provide regarding issues “In Progress” would be great, too. But in general, any attention you can give to any issue would be much appreciated.

If there are enough interested Developers, then we can also create a developer-focused working group so that they can focus on related issues.

Cross-team collaboration opportunities

Discuss or share ideas of how the Training Team could collaborate more with other Make WordPress Teams such as Marketing, Documentation etc.

Before you leave…

We’d love to hear what you achieved on the day. Before leaving the table, please submit the Contributor Day Attendee Feedback Form and respond to the relevant thread in Slack.
