The Unseen Dimensions of Fixed Wireless Access Traffic Surge I’ve been diving into the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, and there’s a standout trend that strike me: the incredible growth of Fixed Wireless Access traffic. By 2029, FWA traffic is expected to reach around 150 exabytes per month. That's not just a big number; it's huge! surpassing the combined traffic of 2G, 3G, and 4G, and accounting for a substantial slice of the 5G pie. This isn't just growth; it's a paradigm shift. The evolution of FWA is fascinating because it reshapes how we think about network deployment and management. While FWA positions itself as a robust competitor in the home broadband market, it introduces complex challenges for network management. The data consumption of FWA-enabled devices is significantly higher, often three to four times that of a typical smartphone. This puts interesting questions about network load and capacity, particularly as we push the limits of 5G infrastructure. Are our current strategies and technologies equipped to handle this surge? [Nokia Reports 32% Drop In Profit But Sees Recovery In 2nd Half] Nokia (NOKIA.HE), opens new tab reported a 32% drop in second-quarter operating profit, citing weak demand for 5G telecom equipment, but the Finnish telecoms group said sales should recover towards the end of 2024 with the help of orders from North America. The profit, that excludes certain charges and asset revaluations to make it comparable with last year's results, fell to 423 million euros ($462.38 million), from 619 million euros in the same quarter a year earlier. Nokia and its rival Ericsson (ERICb.ST), opens new tab have been hit by customers buying less telecom equipment, and have announced thousands of lay-offs in response. Net sales fell 18% year-on-year, as the pace of investment in 5G technology in India, a key market, slowed after rapid growth a year before. Jefferies analysts said that both sales and earnings missed forecasts when one-offs were excluded. Nokia's shares were down 8% by 0718 GMT. CEO Pekka Lundmark said sales were taking more time to recover than earlier anticipated, but forecast that net sales would significantly accelerate in the second half of the year, echoing similar forecasts made last week by Ericsson. The CEO pointed to an improving fibre market in the U.S and a $42 billion U.S government program to boost citizens' access to high-speed broadband. "That's creating some interesting additional dynamics right now for us because we are clearly the first mover there with a product portfolio that is compatible with the 'Buy America' requirements," Lundmark told Reuters. He said that the real boost would be felt next year. In Europe, Nokia and Ericsson could see a boost from Chinese vendors losing market share after Germany decided to exclude Chinese companies like Huawei [RIC:RIC:HWT.UL] or ZTE (000063.SZ), opens new tab from the nation's 5G network products from 2029. Lundmark said Nokia was still studying the impact of that decision. The group kept its full-year guidance for comparable operating profit. Between 2012 and 2022, mobile broadband access in Africa grew from 114 million to nearly 400 million people. Despite this, Africa still faces the largest connectivity gap worldwide, with over 1 billion people, or 72% of the population, unconnected as of December 2022. Service providers have significantly reduced the coverage gap, bringing it down from 56% in 2012 to 13% by 2022. However, nearly 200 million people still live in areas without mobile broadband coverage. Additionally, more than 800 million people live in covered areas but do not subscribe to mobile broadband services. While infrastructure investments have extended connectivity, there is still much work to be done to ensure all Africans can benefit from digital connectivity. Between 2012 and 2022, the number of people in Africa with mobile broadband access1 more than tripled, from 114 million to almost 400 million. Despite this, Africa still has the greatest connectivity gap of any region in the world, highlighting the impact of the barriers to mobile broadband adoption. As of December 2022, just over 1 billion people in Africa, or 72% of the region’s population, were not connected. This accounts for more than a quarter of the total number of unconnected people globally. Governments in Africa and around the world have introduced policies to incentivize internet infrastructure rollout in underserved locations and stimulate demand for services among consumers. In Africa, at least 51 of the 54 countries in the region have introduced or are in the process of introducing the universal service fund (USF) mechanism as a means to deploy mobile broadband infrastructure in commercially unviable areas. The intention is to bridge the connectivity gap. In all cases, USFs are partly or entirely financed through contributions from telecoms service providers. Building strong networks into and across #Africa is critical to overcome the digital divide, but it is not always commercially viable. Partners from international financial institutions and strong organizations like GSMA Africa help to overcome the commercial gaps for the long term viability. As an #impact focused company, KI Africa is committed to looking beyond the short term financial returns and instead embrace the long term outcomes of our investments into digital infrastructure. Collectively the digital sector, through strong investment, has significantly increased access to mobile broadband, resulting in tripling of access, but we still have a long way to go. The reality is not just access via infrastructure but acccess due to cost of service, and both need continued attention to balance the need for farther reach, and lower pricing. A tough achievement without strong partnerships. Our partnerships on connecting Africa through undersea cables have taken us from the Horn of Africa to the tip of South Africa, and the coasts between. We recognize that #digitalinclusion is an essential element in driving #growth across Africa. It ties the sectors together, it enables education ecosystems to thrive, knowledge to spread, and innovation to prosper. For us, that’s a start, and we look forward to announcing more exciting and impactful partnerships this year to contribute substantively in connecting Africa.

An interesting read in Deutsche Welle making the case that more cell towers, faster networks and overall greater provision of digital infrastructure is the key to unlocking Africa’s untapped potential. While ‘leapfrogging’ – the bypassing of the traditional stages of technological development in favour of more advanced solutions (e.g moving straight to mobile networks ahead of landline as many African nations have done) – has been instrumental in delivering better, faster, cheaper internet, many coverage gaps still persist. Mobile services are the best valued by Spaniards consumers, compared with other utilities, but if you look to main reasons for dissatisfaction with services (percentage of households/individuals, IV Quarter 2023) it looks like pricing is the key, as Fixed Broadband, Mobile Internet and Mobile Telephony receive the worst valorations in terms of Service Quality! As it pertains to network optimisation, the current pain point for telcos in Africa lie in two key areas: Firstly, telcos predominantly employ reactive maintenance strategies, addressing issues only after they arise. This approach results in frequent network outages, service disruptions, and dissatisfied customers. Secondly, without the guidance of AI-driven insights, telcos struggle with inefficient resource allocation, often either over- or under-allocating resources to various segments of their networks. The solution, which will require the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), promises the following: - Proactive Problem Detection: AI algorithms can analyse massive amounts of network data in real-time, identifying anomalies and predicting potential failures before they cause outages. - Optimised Resource Allocation: ML models can forecast network traffic patterns, allowing telcos to dynamically allocate resources for optimal performance and cost savings. - Automated Troubleshooting: AI-powered tools can diagnose and even resolve certain network issues without human intervention, reducing downtime and improving customer experience. Furthermore, AI/ML implementation enhances customer experience by enabling faster problem resolution, fewer outages, and ultimately, reduced churn, while also future-proofing networks to meet the demands of 5G, IoT, and other emerging technologies. We believe that Africa stands to reap significant benefits from the utilisation of AI and ML technologies, leveraging their transformative potential to drive innovation.

Incentivizing Investment: 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 & 𝐓𝐚𝐱 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬:  Financial incentives from governments could make 5G SA deployment more attractive for telecom operators, especially in less populated areas. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬: Auctioning spectrum licenses specifically for 5G SA deployment with favorable terms could encourage operators to prioritize this technology.  ⤴️ 3. Fostering Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing: 𝐄𝐔-𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬: Joint research initiatives between European countries & telcos could accelerate technological advancements in 5G SA 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: Encouraging knowledge exchange between countries that have already deployed 5G SA successfully could provide valuable insights for others  ⤴️ 4. Addressing Public Concerns: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Public concerns regarding safety & health risks associated with 5G need to be addressed through transparent communication & robust scientific evidence 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬: Public awareness campaigns can emphasize the economic & social benefits of 5G SA, like improved mobile broadband, smart city applications & industrial automation  ⤴️ 5. Recently, Nokia came out with its report ‘Mobile Broadband Index’, and the results are promising. Mobile data consumption by 5G users is 3.6 times more than 4G users! I believe there are 3 clear reasons for this: Firstly, the infrastructure and ecosystem for 5G is rapidly evolving. For instance, approximately 17 percent of active 4G devices are now 5G capable. Secondly, India has one of the highest data consumption in the world and has been growing at 20 percent year on year. On average, an individual subscriber is consuming 24 GB of data per month. Lastly, #5G availability and performance, coupled with the availability of a wide range of affordable devices, as well as the introduction of new data-intensive apps and services, will accelerate future 5G growth. I believe there is still a long way to go before the industry can monetize 5G in a significant manner, however, these steps are definitely in the right direction!
