Anyone working on #marineCDR knows that permitting for pilots is one of the biggest challenges. The ocean is vast, much of it is unknown, and the history of humanity for the most part has not been kind to it. It is understandable that in the face of multi-gigaton concepts involving alkalinity, biomass, direct ocean capture, sinking, floating, etc, regulators would just be overwhelmed. It doesn’t matter that the total mass of the oceans is more than a billion gigatons, a 10,000 ton pilot is still a huge project to permit. So we’ve decided to take our accumulated knowledge of international (and some local) policies governing the sea and share it in a blog post. We hope it will help other startups, researchers, and maybe a few regulators, get a clear perspective on what exists and what needs to be done. We cover frameworks such as the #UNCLOS, the #LondonProtocol, the #BucharestConvention, and more. We also highlight some open databases of permits, some successful mCDR permits, and a list of key people to follow in order to stay up to date. Though it’s a bit long, we hope you enjoy it and find it useful. Fair winds, and following seas ⛵ 🔗 Read the full blog post here: https://lnkd.in/diX-7ebm #ClimateAction #MarineCDR #Sustainability #Policy #OceanConservation #CarbonRemoval #RewindEarth

Doing my part in fixing our climate

Key Takeaways from last week's Advancing Ocean CDR Summit: 🙌There are many amazing people working on Ocean CDR that I've had the honor to meet (shout outs below) 🔬Demonstrating permanence & environmental safety with solid science is key to unlocking the carbon retention potential of seas and oceans 👩🏻⚖️Regulation all over the world is dealing with permit requests for Ocean CDR field trials, and we must learn to move fast. The ocean is vast, and with today's monitoring technology, it is definitely possible to move faster while making sure the environment stays safe 🏦Govt. and philanthropic funding for scientific research would go a long way in this space 🔭Building comprehensive, transparent MRV systems while staying cost efficient is the name of the game. It's tricky to monitor everything everywhere all at once, while keeping a sane $ cost per ton. 🌊The ocean's potential is huge. Ocean Climate Action, an NGO dedicated to advancing sustainable ocean policies, has released a report reviewing the Biden Administration's progress in key areas related to climate and ocean health, including Evaluating Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (#mCDR). The main milestones in mCDR include: 1. Increased Federal Support: $30 million for scientific work on mCDR and $36 million for accelerating mCDR technologies. 2. Fast-Track Action Committee: Co-chaired by the White House OSTP and NOAA to develop a national mCDR Research Plan. 3. DOE's Responsible Carbon Management Initiative: Engaging the public on mCDR research. 4. EPA’s Permitting Clarification: Clearer processes for mCDR projects under the Clean Water Act. The administration, backed by US Congress and ocean advocates, is leading a new era of ocean climate action. We’re proud to be part of this movement and are committed to pushing these initiatives forward. #OceanClimateAction #MarineCDR #Sustainability #ClimateChange #RewindEarth

Last Thursday, we had the privilege of hosting a Carbon-Sinking breakfast cruise featuring mCDR industry pioneers Rewind and Gigablue. This followed a week filled with impactful events by PLANETech - Climate Change Technologies and Ignite The Spark. The presence and enthusiasm of climate tech investors, entrepreneurs, and accelerators who joined us shone so brightly in these challenging times. Special thanks to the superstars Gigablue and Rewind for allowing us to witness the power of gigaton-scale removal firsthand, all while floating in nature’s greatest carbon sink 🌊 Here’s to more groundbreaking innovations that pave the way for a sustainable future and unite our vibrant ecosystem! #mCDR #climatetech #nomatterwhat #CarbonRemoval Photo credits: the talented Tali Talmid Flax 📷 Vanessa Bartram | Noa Olenik | Ram Amar | Nitai Amiel, PhD | Dotan Levy | Ori Shaashua | Meirav Koren Beeri | Lital Gruss Mitrani | ZORA Ventures

Our partners at Supercritical have launched a world-first in carbon removal: a multi-pathway marketplace with live pricing and availability data of the market! As one of the projects listed in the marketplace, we're proud to contribute to a new era of radical transparency in carbon removal. Carbon removal is crucial for our planet's future, but even proactive companies that have committed to this technology face significant challenges: · Lack of clarity around availability and pricing · Concerns about credit quality Supercritical's marketplace will transform how buyers purchase carbon removal, offering a single place where buyers can: 1. Navigate the CDR market with ease 2. Access live data to make informed decisions 3. Purchase high-quality credits, including Rewind, that will have real climate impact We're honoured to be at the forefront of this industry transformation, playing our part in accelerating effective climate action. Ocean CO2 Removal Advisor, the World Ocean Council

Rewind Publishes a New Standard in Marine CDR for Public Consultation At the World Ocean Council we are excited to see further progress in Marine CDR as one of our members  Rewind releases the Marine Terrestrial Biomass Storage (MTBS) Framework Protocol.   The protocol aims to develop a high standard for sustainable biomass sourcing and permanent carbon storage in anoxic marine environments.   Rewind's MTBS Protocol demonstrates the commitment of many of the sector’s responsible innovators by requiring a transparent, accurately measured, science-backed method for carbon sequestration with public consultation to enhance the ability to support climate goals. As part of the process, on Wednesday, 19th June at 11.30am CET Ram Amar and Josh Steinberg will host a webinar providing a deep dive into how biomass can be stored in anoxic marine environments.   The MTBS Protocol signals: Scientific Integrity: Backed by the best available science.  Collaborative Effort: Developed and reviewed with over 20 leading organizations. Responsible Implementation: ISO 14064-2 compliant, emphasizing transparency and ecological safety. Public Consultation: The protocol is open for feedback until June 30, 2024.   Get Involved: review and provide feedback on Rewind's MTBS protocol.
