Spencer Murphy is good friends with G.I. Joe member Thunder. During the Joe Team's Fort Knox mission, Cobra destroyed all of the team's APCs and most of the Army infantry's vehicles, leaving behind slow-moving transports for the Joe Team to use. Thunder then remembered Murphy's ranch being nearby and decided to pay him a visit. He asked Murphy to allow the team to use his thoroughbreds so that they may catch up to Cobra's bullet train used to escape with gold bullion stolen from Fort Knox. Murphy agrees to the request and after several attempts to mount what Gung-Ho called "spirited" horses, the team successfully rode after the escaping train.

Murphy was later seen after the team's successful recovery mission, meeting with Duke and Fort Knox base commander General Stack. After hearing that Murphy's involvement was a vital part of the team's success in recovering the stolen gold, General Stack promised Murphy would be awarded a medal. Murphy declined, stating that he would settle with having his prized horses returned to him. This upset Gung-Ho who developed a fondness for horseback riding until he was bucked for the last time by his mount. This led to Murphy, Duke and General Stack laughing at Gung-Ho's misfortune until he opted to "ride off into the sunset" by means of driving a jeep instead. Murphy and the others watched as Gung-Ho bid them all a fond farewell, driving off into the sunset.[1]
