I'm just gonna run my mouth and rant about Ruin, this isn't necessarily a theory, just a talk about things
Ooh maybe I can finally do that Ruin Review considering I'm now a YEAR LATE ON IT 💀☠️
-Ruin Review
well, that was boring.
In all seriousness it was underwhelming, but I felt the same about the base game, Security Breach.
First off, gameplay. It's just a walk from Point A to Point B game just like Security Breach. While Ruin seems less buggy and a bit more optimized, bugs and glitches and optimization are not the game. The game design is the game, and both SB and Ruin suffer from bad game design.
This is something people tend to just not address when talking about the two, it's not just the bugs that make a game bad.
Ruin relies on a core mechanic, the VANNI Mask, to challenge the player. You're basically only, and exclusively, in danger while wearing the mask. The game throws challenges at you which require the Mask to complete. Basically, in simple terms, to complete tasks and therefore progress the game, you must temporarily put yourself in danger. Basic game design.
However, in execution, it's not great. You can just take off the Mask whenever you start to tip into danger and wait for the Entity to dissipate. Even in scenarios where you should constantly be in danger, like the Monty water scene, you are absolutely in complete safety while stepping on the platforms you're supposed to go on, and only in minimal danger while in the water, which is supposed to be the ultimate risk to get to the next platform.
Did you know Monty only walks, in his normal, extremely slow pace, towards you while in the water during Ruin? Now you do I guess. You can outrun Monty in the water by walking. Absolutely miserable. Actually, pretty much nothing runs in Ruin. That's my next issue.
The dangers are pathetic.
These extremely fearsome, terrifying rotten mechanical corpses slowly shambles their way towards you, and only when you've been stupid enough to not remove the Mask during the extremely forgiving time frame you had to do so.
The part where you first meet Chica? She can't actually spot you. You pretty much only die if you're stupid enough to try to pass her when the game clearly tells you to lure her away seconds beforehand. The chase scene is literally like seven seconds long. I don't think it even breaks ten seconds, you run into a small room and get to the other side of it, and the chase is over. I can't believe it.
Roxy? Literally bugged. Pretty sure in the first patch, her AI was broken and she couldn't move, forcing the player to die by her BIG BOUNCY MASSIVE uh, hitbox.
Anyways Monty is the most frequent threat, contrary to the base game (thankfully), and the issues are most visible there. He basically never runs. All the threats slowly walk towards you.
On to the plot.
well, that was boring.
We literally guessed the entire game just from a trailer.
"That's not Gregory, that's definitely the Mimic."
It was the Mimic.
"Ooh, Roxy's a good guy now?"
Roxy was indeed a good guy in Ruin.
"Is that a mix between Sun and Moon? I think he's named Eclipse."
Eclipse was indeed named Eclipse and was a mix of Sun and Moon.
"They didn't show Freddy's head in the trailer. I bet he's headless."
Freddy was indeed headless.
"Roxy has a new face? It's probably a mask."
It was unfortunately revealed to be a mask. Thanks for nothing, Help Wanted 2. 😭
We didn't guess much else, but it doesn't matter because Ruin basically doesn't really have a very complex plot anyways. We guessed all the important stuff.
Speaking of which, Ruin is a lot more linear and story focused than SB. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, I actually kind of like it. The story actually exists and is simple and able to be followed by the average person, unlike Security Breach. There isn't as much speculation needed in Ruin, as the story is tells is extremely clear to the player.
Anyways, final wrap ups, I always have something spoiled whenever FNaF stuff releases, but I don't really mind. I knew of the Mimic and how it looked and how it was pretending to be Gregory on day one. Same with the costumes, the Entity, MXES, stuff like that. I was happy by the Mimic's design. It looked good, and upon seeing it, I thought "yeah that's definitely Burntrap."
I was actually disappointed by the costumes though. Upon seeing them, I thought there'd be a part where you're in a room with a bunch of costumes and the Mimic would be hiding in one, just like the books. That didn't happen. The Mimic is basically only present in a few cutscenes and a chase. A bit disappointing.
Either way, happy late birthday, Ruin. I like you a lot.
