iPad Stops Displaying on External Monitor Once Fully Charged

I have an iPad Air, currently running iPadOS 16.6

To use my external monitor, I connect it through the iPad USB-C charging port to a Dell monitor (cable is a USB-C to USB). While my battery remains under 100%, everything functions perfectly - but as soon as my iPad is fully charged, the monitor disconnects. Is there a way to fix this?

Hello CatyB15,

Let's get your iPad Air updated to the latest iPadOS 16.6.1 to see if that behavior still persists:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

Should that still persist, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Apple Support They'll be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.

It's now 2024, and this same problem, exactly as described, is happening to me with an M4 iPad Pro (both 11" and 13" models) connected via USB-C to my BenQ PD3220U monitor.

Further to the description, if I turn on the 80% limit feature to optimize battery health, the display disconnects once the iPad battery reaches 80% charge. Turning the feature off results in the display immediately reconnecting and working properly, until it reaches 100% charge, at which point it again disconnects and the external display goes black. So as long as the iPad is charging, the external display works. If it's not charging, the external display disconnects. I can't for the life of me figure out why.
