On Friday 19th July, 8.5 million Windows machines were brought down leading to the infamous ‘Blue Screen of Death’. This plunged the aviation industry momentarily into chaos, with thousands of flights cancelled or delayed spread unevenly across the network on what should have been one of the busiest days of the summer for Europe’s airports. Our latest Five Minute Feature explores the technical reasons behind the outage and how it serves as both a warning and an opportunity for the aviation industry to reassess and fortify its digital defences, ensuring safer and more reliable operations across the entire chain. [PRESS RELEASE] ACI EUROPE today took stock of changes to the EU Aviation Security Regulation which introduces severe restrictions to the use of next generation (C3) cabin baggage scanners at airports in the EU and EEA. The new restriction introduces, as of 1 September 2024, a 100ml limitation for individual containers of liquids – thus erasing the main benefit for passengers from C3 scanners. It will result in significant operational strain for airports, decreasing passenger throughput at security checkpoints that will need to be mitigated with the deployment of additional staff and reconfiguration where feasible. The new restriction penalises airports that have already invested in C3 scanners to improve passenger experience, as little of the intended benefits will materialise – yet the significant purchase and operational cost of C3 scanners remain. ACI EUROPE would like to congratulate Eliza Vozemberg on her election as Chair of the Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee in the European Parliament. For the next 2 and a half years, she will chair the Committee dedicated to facilitating connectivity across Europe and allowing citizens and goods to move freely and easily across Europe. The Committee works on a range of vital aviation topics, including the Fit for 55 package, and the Single European Sky. ACI EUROPE looks forward to working closely with Eliza Vozemberg on highlighting the importance of Europe’s airports, and working on a path that satisfies the twin objectives of both decarbonising aviation whilst protecting the notable benefits airports present socially, economically, as well as in terms of connectivity. We would also like to congratulate the newly elected Vice-Chairs of the Committee: Virginijus Sinkevičius, Sophia Kircher, ELENA KOUNTOURA, and Matteo Ricci. We wish this Bureau the best of luck with their ongoing work!

Director General at Airports Council International - ACI EUROPE

Presenting to the Board of Directors of Athens International Airport yesterday - reviewing trading conditions & future determinants, key challenges ahead and strategies to future-proof the airport business. Always interesting to exchange with shareholders, as attracting private capital remains vital for airports to be able to deliver on sustainable air connectivity. It was of course special to do this in Athens 🇬🇷 - given the long-standing involvement and support of CEO Yiannis Paraschis and his great teams to ACI EUROPE - not to mention their always progressive positioning on sustainability and current track record in terms of traffic. This is truly an airport positioned as a role model well beyond our sector, especially considering the role it has played for the economic renewal of Greece post the sovereign debt crisis. Special thanks to Athens International Airport ‘s Chairman Michail Kefalogiannis and Vice-Chairman Gerhard Schroeder from AviAlliance GmbH

ACI EUROPE is pleased to share that the CLEAN ATM 2 and the GREEN CNS initiatives, both prepared and coordinated by SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM), were selected as the two Air Traffic Management-related projects to receive funding in response to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Call for proposals 2023. The two multi-stakeholder initiatives are set to receive over €140 million of EU public funding, under the CEF, the main instrument established by the European Union to support and accelerate strategic transport investments. ACI EUROPE has supported airports every step of the way, through our participation in the SDM. As a result of ACI EUROPE’s efforts to bring airports together to create multi-stakeholder applications, 12 airports will now receive over €69 million from 2024-2027 in funding against the investment of nearly €140 million. The airports are mainly involved in two projects that will cover a variety of topics all aimed at optimising the use of airspace and improving operational resilience, including the reduction of congestion, delays and unnecessary emissions through the Extended Airports Operations Plan and its connection to the network, as well as the adoption of standards, protocols and services that will further digitalise operations. With the next EU political cycle beginning in earnest, the role of EU funding cannot be understated. The twin objectives of decarbonising aviation and preserving air connectivity will require accompanying investments through appropriate EU financial instruments. As noted in our ‘Airport Industry Manifesto for the Next EU Political Cycle (2024-2029)’, ongoing EU financial support to SESAR Research & Development as well as Deployment in the next multi-annual financial EU framework is essential, particularly through CEF and Horizon. ⭐ We look forward to collaborating through these initiatives in the coming years! 🌟 Exciting news! The CLEAN ATM 2 and GREEN CNS initiatives, coordinated by the #SESAR Deployment Manager, have been selected to receive over €140 million in EU public funding under the CEF Transport Call for proposals 2023. 🛫 These multistakeholder initiatives are a crucial step for the #modernisation of #ATM in #Europe, as they contribute both to Common Project 1 deployment and to CNS infrastructure evolution. 💰 These projects are set to mobilize almost € 300 million of investments in the next five years, and they add up to the € 2.7 billion portfolio of projects already coordinated by #SDM. 🔊 Mariagrazia La Piscopia, Executive Director at the SESAR Deployment Manager, said: “We welcome the excellent outcomes of our submission for the CEF Call 2023, a new milestone in the SDM task to support the stakeholders’ community in their #ATM #modernisation efforts. These awarding results represent further proof that the Partnership we established – with stakeholders willing and committed to join forces and work together – is delivering critical results and helping to build the ATM industry of the future”. #SESARdelivers #AsOne #aviation #CP1 #EU CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency European Commission
