Weapons
Sunset Overdrive includes a number of "unconventional" Weapons to choose from. These weapons can be either obtained through playing Main Missions or by buying them from Two Hat Jack in exchange for Overcharge. Be sure to check back with Two-Hat Jack often through the course of the game, as his inventory will expand the farther you are in the story.
Weapons come in four types - but every gun is unique in style, presentation and effect. Single-Shot Weapons fire slow but precise shots at targets, while Automatic weapons fire a steady stream of shots at targets. Deployable weapons fire slower shots that either explode or trigger an effect shortly after being shot.
Reccomended Weapons
While every weapon is great in its own way, we've compiled a short list of IGN's favorite weapons and ways to use them to their fullest potential. They include:
- The Flaming Compensator is the first weapon you get in the game, and it can also be one of the best. It's always reliable, good on everything except robots (and can still be used against them in a pinch). Best of all, its high damage spread is bolstered by its ability to engulf targets on fire, freaking out Scabs and damaging Herkers over time as you swap out for other weapons
- The TNTeddy is another weapon you gain early on, and never stops being useful. It has a very high rate of damage, and direct hits against most enemies will cause huge explosions, taking out anyone caught in the blast. The weapon becomes even better when bolstered by Amps, as you can freeze enemies in place so they can't escape more teddy bear blasts.
- The Freeze Bomb is also a great pick, as stated above - an immobile enemy is open for a wide range of attacks. Blast a group of OD and lay into them with a dive bomb attack, or freeze a Herker solid before lobbing damaging projectiles his way.
- The Acid Sprinkler can be a dangerous weapon when used the right way. It's not the greatest offensive weapon, but when holding a point, or luring swarms of OD into a small area, a few well placed sprinklers can quickly cut down advancing hordes. It's a great weapon to fire a few shots during a Night Defense and move on elsewhere, as the acid takes care of the rest.
- The Roman Candle is one of the best automatic weapons in the game. Not only does it shoot a rapid amount of ammo in a short amount of time - every bullet is actually a firework, which further explodes upon impact and ignites enemies. Pair it with a high damaging weapon Amp like Twist of Fate and you'll be seeing nuclear explosions all day long.
- The Charge Beam is by far the most expensive weapon, costing 100,000 Overcharge, but its worth it! Save your Overcharge by checking our Interactive Maps, and buy the Charge Beam instead. This weapon fires short but constant bursts of energy that can cut down swaths of enemies - especially Fizzco Bots. By late game, a weapon like this can make missions and quests a breeze a you destroy even the toughest bots with a few quick bursts from the Charge Beam!
Melee Weapons and Weapon Leveling
Melee Weapons are different in that they all behave equally, even though variants can be purchased. They can only be altered through Melee Amps and Overdrives.
Every weapon can be upgraded by simply spending time killing enemies with the chosen weapon. Killing enemies earns XP for that weapon, and gaining enough will increase its level. At level 2, any weapon can be upgraded with Weapon Amps that you can purchase from Floyd or gain in missions. Weapons will also increase in max ammo and other stats relative to the weapon type.
For a quick way to level up you guns, replay the mission Hero's Duty and fight endless waves of enemies.
