The World Health Organization (WHO) releases comprehensive recommendations for conducting external inspections of a body and accurately filling in the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.

The WHO acknowledges the invaluable input of numerous experts from around the world who actively participated in the development of these recommendations. Distinguished professionals contributed their expertise to ensure the accuracy, quality and alignment of the guidelines with international practice. The secretariat function was carried out by the Classifications and Terminologies Unit at the World Health Organization (WHO).

The newly released recommendations by the WHO aim to provide standardized and reliable protocols for external inspections of a body and the accurate completion of Medical Certificates of Cause of Death. These guidelines will contribute to improved cause of death data collection and analysis, ultimately enhancing public health interventions and policies worldwide.

In conjunction with the recently released WHO recommendations, an accompanying four-page Cause of Death Certification Flyer has been introduced as a valuable resource and practical tool for certifying physicians.

The released recommendations are available in Spanish and Portuguese. Arabic, Chinese, French and Russian are underway.
