The MG Cyber GTS Concept is a 2+2 electric coupe, and it could be here soon

Surprise! MG - purveyor of sensible budget crossovers - reveals design for a four-seater e-coupe

Published: 11 Jul 2024

Back in the flat-cap days, the MGB turned from a roadster into a GT Coupe. Now it’s thinking about repeating the play with the electric Cyberster.

This is the Cyber GTS Concept. Yes, right now just a show one-off for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But there’s a sense of possibility.

It’s also an important way for Josef Kaban (pictured below), MG’s new head of design, to draw attention to the nameplate. He’s a significant appointment. His CV includes the exterior of the Bugatti Veyron. Then several Skodas, Audis and a period at BMW and Rolls-Royce.

"I wanted the roofline higher at the back, so there is some weight at the rear, so it feels like a car you can use everyday. You can see it’s a 2+2," he told TopGear.com.

"MG is about enjoying your life. You know who you are. The shape is soft, not aggressive, but confident and sporty. Even with our future SUVs we won’t be aggressive."

Carl Gotham, director of MG’s London design studio where the Cyberster was originally sketched, said the GTS is indeed a recent development but a natural one.

The GTS hasn’t got an interior and is just a solid design model. But as David Allison of MG UK said: “We say it’s just a concept to gauge reaction, but, y’know, the speed MG moves is on another level.”

He acknowledges the Cyberster and indeed possible GTS are a tiny part of a business that mostly sells budget crossovers. "The Cyberster helps us move beyond," he added.

Stylish electric coupes are in ridiculously short supply. Stick something in the comments below if you do, or don’t, think there should be one more.
