After a few years in the wilderness, it finally seems as if the Marvel vs. Capcom series of crossover fighting games is getting a new lease of life, thanks to the announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection.
2017's Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was the last mainline entry in the series, with the last numbered entry – Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – launching all the way back in 2011.
While it's a long way off from being confirmed, it's worth noting that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 has been playfully referenced in a recent Deadpool comic.
As some people have noted, it's unlikely that Marvel's comic book writers would have access to this kind of inside information, but that hasn't stopped plenty of other fans getting excited about the prospect of another entry in the long-running fighting game series, which started way back in 1996 with X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Is it just me that loathes the 3d style of recent fighting games like SF6 and MvC3? Much rather them go back to the pixel art style of their predecessors. I'm almost definitely in the minority however.
@mashk No, everyone here loves 3d fighting games more than the good ones they used to make. You're all alone.
But seriously, I think it fits certain games, like the injustice games, and platform fighters and stuff, but yeah SF6 looks silly to me.
@mashk certainly not. Pixels were the golden age of fighting games. 3D feels lifeless to me IMO. I remember how excited everyone was for the tech when Toy Story came out. Now it all looks the same. City of the Wolves just feels like KoF 15. Street Fighter 6 has no real distinction to 5, etc..
I think the write just thinks Infinite IS 4, which it techinically is, but at the same time, is also 7
@Zeebor15 A really good example I saw somewhere was that Infinite isn't 4 because SF Alpha isn't 3, and the Tekken Tags aren't numbered within the main series.

Given what they've done with the Street Fighter series, and what generally seems to be done now, it'd be a hard pass. A gutted core game, with most of the characters, stages, costumes, etc as DLC? Nope.
Are we sure this is not being taken out of context? I’ve read Deadpool comics a lot back in the day and this sounds like a really normal quip with no deep meaning behind it. Correlation does not equal causation.
@Jawessome I feel the exact same way. I know it's impossible but the only Marvel vs. Capcom 4 I want is the one made with old fashioned 2D sprites. People liked MvC3, I hated it. The old games are timeless, they are still gorgeous to this day. 3D and 2.5D, even the stuff that Arc System Works is doing, it just becomes obsolete when the next generation of consoles comes along, or even before then. It's the difference between art and a product. I might as well buy a copy of Madden.
@pintofsimilar yup, I’ve no interest in spending my money on a segmented / incomplete game with updates rolling out over years. 🤢
I’m fine if MvC4 doesn’t happen, but I will be even happier if it does.
If MvC4 comes out I will be there day one.
I am saying no because it would most likely look and play like recent fighting games and not be hand-drawn 2D snap-tastic-ness.
