Yet another gacha-based craze is currently sweeping PlayStation in the form of Zenless Zone Zero — an action RPG with a quirky futuristic setting. This is the latest release from ridiculously prolific developer HoYoverse, and we'd bet on it making the company a whole lotta money.
HoYoverse is the Chinese outfit behind fellow free-to-play giants Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, so it's fair to say that it knows what it's doing in the live service space. But Zenless Zone Zero stands apart from its kin thanks to a focus on the kind of frantic, combo and dodge-based combat that you'd find in a more traditional action title.

Downloaded it and thought the combat is fun but it quickly dawned on me that i don't want to be sucked into this like i was Genshin so i deleted it.
I would, but I barely even have enough time to do Genshin with everything else I play.
If I wasn't already into Genshin, I might try it. But like the first two commenters, I don't have that kind of time. I'd like to play something else now and then, not all Hoyoverse all the time.
I’m downloading it ready for tomorrow - my first free to play gatcha, I’ll see if my internet can handle it, but it looks fun and stylish
I quickly bounced off both Genshin and Honkai so I was pretty surprised when I gave ZZZ a “quick go” last night and ended up playing for about 3 hours. I’m still getting to grips with the gacha style and understanding the gameplay loop but the combat is a lot of fun and ridiculously stylish. The amount of grinding for new stuff will ultimately determine how much I play this in the long term but so far I’m enjoying it wayyyy more than I thought I would.
I gave it a try. I really wish I could get into all of HoYoverse's games because I absolutely love how they look, but all the free-to-play stuff gets in the way of my enjoyment, even more than it does in a lot of other free-to-play games.
I like buying games that have endings. But ZZZ and Honkai look compelling. Oh well, time to start Trails through Daybreak!
I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. I like that it's feels like a mix of persona and other Hoyo games. The MC proxies and the 3 main battle characters are also a great characters with fun personalities so that helps. Looks great and the combat is fun. I don't fully understand all the gacha mechanics. I see this as a good filler game.
I love anime and rpgs but this gatcha crap can kiss my ass.
Tried it last night for an hour and it was pretty good, I may put a couple hours a week into it but knowing it can't be completed puts me off investing a lot of time into it. If only Hoyoverse could make a proper single player game, it would sell like crazy.
I'm around five hours in. I got pretty lucky with my free pulls and already have 2 S ranks (Rina and Agent 11)
The hollow exploration is pretty dull and just doesn't compare to Genshin's sense of freedom, but the combat feels fantastic.
There's also pretty much no incentive to spend real money since missions with trial characters are replayable. Bad for Hoyo's bottom line, but great news for me.
Looks lovely but I'm not sure about the gameplay. Seems very wordy, I was mashing the X button a lot and the 'TV' Hollow puzzle gameplay just isn't fun. Might delete, but will give it a further go.
@koffing I'd suggest waiting until they are finished and just playing through the main quest in a few years. It will be a different experience and you'll miss out on some of the time gated side content, but that is mostly like Anime filler episodes. You'll also miss out on many of the playable characters but again you don't need them.
Played it for an hour or so last night. I'll probably play bits and pieces of it over time.

@themightyant It looks great but WW is more my style of gameplay. I'll come back to this at some point down the line.
It's interesting how all the 3 Hoyoverse games on PS share the same intrinsic model or structure yet each is clearly inspired by a different genre of jrpg - Zelda, Tales, and Persona. Of the three, Star Rail is the one I enjoy the most.
Hate the gacha model and don't find anything at all attractive about these games, so hard pass for me.
@z0d15g0d WW has no controller support on mobile/tablet so I can't really play it, it runs like ass on my aging PC.
Crazy amounts of style and slick animations but the combat has been pretty braindead. Also the mountain of tutorial boxes and cutscenes spewing fantasy lingo within the opening hours does NOT help immersing you into the gameplay and world.
Never heard of it to be fair. From what I've now seen and read it's 100% not for me
I played it for a bit. Combat is quite fun even though it's button-mashy at first it does feel good when you can link combos and make ultimate moves. The exploration puzzle game is different if very simple, probably for accessibility but also because it's in the early stages of the narrative. Characters have some nice designs and should keep the cosplayers busy trying to piece together. But as for the Gatcha stuff, like all these games the early stages are fairly generous with mats but I know they will start to ramp up needs and therefore purchasing with real money
@themightyant Damn that sucks. The combat is less mashy than ZZZ or Genshin. Each character has their own combinations, Synergies and timings(plus digimon). Hopefully they bring it to console soon so more players can get stuck in.
Yeah it's pretty fun. Nice to see when a developer actually evolves with their games. We'll see how they progress from here
This seems like a good game for me to start in the dead of winter when I don’t want to leave my house.
I'll be catching up with 2023 for the foreseeable future, and ftp games are not for me anyway. Hope it's a good one of those though!
I like that the game isn't a huge open world. I can see this being a game you can sink a quick 30 minutes into it or so a day.
Love the style don't feel like getting stuck in a loop where you have log in for your bonus and do you daily tasks every day I already play one of these games and that's enough.
The people yearn for The World Ends With You. If ‘stylish’ is enough to make people hold their nose when it comes to gacha mechanics, TWEWY Neo bombing was a failure in marketing more than anything.
@z0d15g0d yeah I hope so, I also hope they fix the performance, which is dire on mobile. Frequently freezing up or dropping to single digit frame rates.
But I’m set up well if it comes to console I have Jiyan, his weapon, Jinhsi, Yinlin, Calcharo, Verina, S6 Mortefi etc. my bad HSR 5-star luck is turned around on WuWa. Enjoy!
I might five it a go, but usually I get really turned off once daily quests are getting introduced.
As much as this title pops up in the news feed, it could drop off the earth, and my day will remain fine and unaffected.
@nessisonett It absolutely was, Square Enix always takes their budget titles out to the pasture, it's very frustrating lol.
I don't even like NEO TWEWY and I think it should have done better than it did.

Downloaded and started it yesterday during the FFXIV 4 hr maintenance.... not sure if it'll have staying power but man the animation is beautiful and the combat is nice and snappy
@themightyant Lol same. Looks like the RnG gods favour me playing WuWa over Star Rail. Jinshi is a lot of fun to play and I'm looking forward to ChangLi.
I played all weekend, got lots of free pulls and even got two S tier. However, getting the mats to upgrade is getting harder and harder and I know this game has a week left on my hard drive before it goes in the bin just like Genshin and Honkai. Fun though, and I would pay full price for a non-gatcha version.
