Elden Ring guide: Somber Smithing Stones

Upgrade your unique armaments with Somber Smithing Stones

Elden Ring’s Somber Smithing Stones are an upgrade material specifically for unique armaments — these are different from regular smithing stones. Unique armaments is a pretty broad category covering most weapons that aren’t just entry-level starting gear. Think special weapons, basically.

Like other items, Somber Smithing Stones have a number that corresponds to their crafting level. Somber Smithing Stone [1] reinforces special armaments to +1, for example, whereas Somber Smithing Stone [3] reinforces special armaments to +3.

In this Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stone guide, we’ll explain how and where to use this upgrade material, what sorts of armaments (weapons) you’ll use them on, and where to find a few early in the game.

Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones and blacksmiths

Unlike plain old smithing stones, you cannot use Somber Smithing Stones at a smithing table (like the one in Church of Elleh) — you’ll need to visit a blacksmith. The easiest to find is Smithing Master Hewg at the Table of Lost Grace.

Limgrave Somber Smithing Stones locations

You can find several Somber Smithing Stones early in Elden Ring’s West Limgrave map.

  1. You’ll find one Somber Smithing Stone inside the Limgrave Tunnels.
  2. There’s one on a corpse to the west of Waypoint Ruins.
  3. One is dropped by a Teardrop Scarab on a ruin to the southwest of Deathtouched Catacombs.
  4. Another Teardrop Scarab will drop one on the southwest shore of the Church of Dragon Communion island.

At the southeast corner of Weeping Peninsula (that’s the area south of Limgrave), you’ll find a lonely stretch of beach. Four spectral jellyfish hover above a corpse in the water and a pile of … something on the beach. Pillage the remains for Somber Smithing Stone [2].

After you defeat Godrick the Grafted in Stormveil Castle, you’ll head into a region called Liurnia. All the way on the northern shore of the region’s lake, there’s an optional dungeon called the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.

You’ll walk out with several smithing stones and Somber Smithing Stones of various levels — by our count, there are at least 3 smithing stone [1], 5 smithing stone [2], 8 smithing stone [3], 1 Somber Smithing Stone [1], 2 Somber Smithing Stone [2], and 2 Somber Smithing Stone [3].

Smithing Master Iji

Almost all the way north in Liurnia, just south of the manor, you’ll find Smithing Master Iji near the Road to the Manor site of grace. He sells Somber Smithing Stone (1) for 2,000 runes, Somber Smithing Stone (2) for 3,000 runes, Somber Smithing Stone (3) for 4,000 runes, and Somber Smithing Stone (4) for 6,000 runes.
