The Game Awards 2020 nominees: The Last of Us Part 2, Hades lead the list

The Last of Us Part 2 gathered 10 nominations, including a Game of the Year nod, to lead all nominees for The Game Awards 2020, announced on Wednesday. The five other video games tapped for GOTY also carried nominations in multiple categories, including the indie hit Hades, with nine overall.

Hades, The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy 7 Remake were all nominated for GOTY as well as all three major development categories: game direction, narrative, and art direction. The other two GOTY nominees, Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which launched on the same date, incidentally) took four and three nominations, respectively.

In all, 75 different games were nominated in 23 categories. Sony Interactive Entertainment is the most-nominated publisher, picking up 22. The Game Awards said that is second to the record-setting 23 Nintendo received in 2017.

The Game Awards air on Dec. 10, 2020 on several live streaming services and platforms (a news release says 45 in all). The show will broadcast in a virtual format this year due to pandemic restrictions, with segments airing live from Hollywood, London’s historic Abbey Road Studios, and other cities. Host Geoff Keighley said in Wednesday’s announcement show that The Game Awards Symphony would also appear.
