Despite the fact that my backlog has never been so big, I can’t help but
look forward to some of the epic games we have arriving later this year.
Let’s not waste any more words on introductions and take a look at a handful
of my most-wanted!
BLACK MYTH: WUKONG has to be right at the top of my list of
games I can’t wait to play this year. Developed by Chinese studio Game
Science, this absolutely gorgeous action-adventure RPG has been in development
for over half a decade. Based on the classic novel Journey to the West, the game
follows the legendary Monkey King traveling through a fantastical world filled
with ancient Chinese folklore and mythological creatures. This one has had a
huge following since it was first revealed – expect some gnarly boss battles
and breathtaking environments later this year!
Another game that has a huge level of hype behind it is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
2: HEART OF CHERNOBYL, which was originally announced fourteen
years ago, and will be the first Stalker game in fifteen years! S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
2 is a first-person shooter that expertly blends survival horror and immersive
storytelling, set in a post-apocalyptic Chernobyl Exclusion Zone filled with
terrifying things undoubtedly trying to kill you. Luckily we don’t have to
wait long for death-by-radiated-mutants!
Another game that I am already looking at my annual leave calendar for is
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, developed by WOLFENSTEIN dev MachineGames
and published by Bethesda. Think
1930’s trap escaping, treasure hunting, and solving ancient puzzles in exotic
locations! The game is an FPS, which seems like a usual choice, but regardless,
I am readying my whip and practising my cheesy one-liners for when it launches
in late 2024!

- Regeneration: Deadpool’s healing factor rivals Wolverine’s. He can
survive decapitation, gunshot wounds, and even bad sequels.
- Weapon XI Debacle: In the disastrous “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,”
Deadpool was turned into Weapon XI, a mutant mishmash. Ryan Reynolds fought hard
to redeem the character, leading to the 2016 standalone
“Deadpool” film.

It all started with a black screen. A stunning instrumental score surged as
huge yellow text floated away into the galaxy on the screen in front of me. From
that moment, I was locked in. Nothing else existed outside of what was on that
screen for the next two hours. I was a fan then and still am now. While I may
not have loved everything the franchise has produced over the years, I’m still
always eager for any chance to explore a new story in its world.
Like it or not, I suspect you already know exactly what I’m talking about.
In the vast universe of pop culture, there are not many that hit the gargantuan
levels of fandom like Star Wars does.
It’s a series that has spanned numerous generations of fans, blurred the
borders of cross-media potential, and explored countless characters and stories
throughout the years.
With video games being my favourite form of entertainment, I couldn’t be
happier to see some of the focus shift back to creating new stories set in one
of the best worlds in fiction. We’ve been treated to some very solid Star Wars
games in recent years (the STAR WARS JEDI series being a particular standout)
and during my younger gaming years and the peak years for Lucasfilm Games,
I was blown away by the KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC games, but I have a
strange feeling that the best years of Star Wars games are still ahead
of us.
Following the success found by the JEDI series, Ubisoft is doing something
I can’t believe we haven’t seen before. They’re taking the Star Wars
franchise open-world, with the successful formula used by games like GRAND THEFT AUTO
and countless others. It’s a somewhat crowded genre, but if done right is a
surefire way to guarantee a happy gaming fanbase. I can’t think of a better
genre in gaming for Star Wars to finally explore. That combined with the fact
that the game is being developed by Massive
Entertainment, the studio responsible for THE DIVISION series, and
the recent AVATAR:
FRONTIERS OF PANDORA, has me very optimistic about STAR WARS
OUTLAWS.
