Publisher @ Rough Draft Atlanta | Named Best Local & Community Newsletter

🎉 Our flagship Rough Draft morning newsletter was recently recognized as Best Local & Community Newsletter in the 2024 Publisher Newsletter Awards, presented by Media Voices. The announcement was made at a July 23 ceremony in London. 📧 Media Voices, a UK-based industry publication, presented awards in 14 categories spanning news, politics, arts, food, and more. Judges from around the world evaluated newsletters on editorial quality, branding, audience, monetization, and overall strategy. 📈 Rough Draft Atlanta launched in 2021 and, thanks to a loyal base of readers and sponsors, has seen sustained growth in both revenue and audience. Our open rate consistently outperforms the industry averages by 2x, and sponsorship slots are filling up months in advance. 🥈 Side Dish, our weekly newsletter about Atlanta’s dining scene was a finalist for Best Food & Drink Newsletter (Winner: The Spectator), and Sketchbook was a finalist for Best Entertainment & Culture Newsletter (Winner: LMAOnaise). 👋 As media organizations seek to deepen relationships with readers, email newsletters have proven to be an effective distribution platform and provide our advertisers with impactful, elegant, and creative advertising products. 🥂 Congratulations to our entire team, which has embraced newsletters as an effective way to connect with subscribers and is committed to putting out a best-in-class product every day. 📲 If you're not subscribed to Rough Draft, text DRAFT to 66866 or visit the Newsletters tab on our website. https://lnkd.in/epr9Sakf #NewsletterAwards #MediaVoices #LocalJournalism #Atlanta #RoughDraftAtlanta

As we await the 2024 Summer Olympics to kick off in a few minutes, we're launching a series of posts celebrating the interesting ways Newspack publishers are covering the Games. 👏 Leigh Munsil and her team at the San Antonio Report were on the lookout for Olympics features because... 𝐈𝐭'𝐬. 𝐓𝐡𝐞. 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬. When the University of Texas at San Antonio announced they'd signed 22-year-old Fatoumata Kabo who is competing this summer at the Games, Melanie Love Salazar reached out to her. They worked across time zones and connection issues to produce a Q&A about Fatoumata's athletic journey and her adjustment to life in Texas. Grateful to see Peter Rubin taking a break from LinkedIn lurking to celebrate the awards The Atavist team won for their outstanding journalism. Longform narrative journalism is an art — The Atavist and their sister publication Longreads set the bar high. #longformjournalism

Over the past week or so, The Atavist has received some incredible recognitions for its work—enough so that I'm breaking my usual LinkedIn lurking to shout it from the rooftops. • From NLGJA (The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists), Excellence in Feature Writing for “Who Killed the Fudge King?” (Tom Donaghy) • From the Society of Professional Journalists, a Sigma Delta Chi Award in the Magazine Writing category for “Held Together” (Joe and Lucy Sexton) • Additionally, we've learned “Two Thousand Miles From Home” (Lily Hyde) is one of 10 finalists for the Bayeux-Calvados Award for War Correspondents 2024. Huge congrats to EIC Seyward Darby (pictured with art director Ed Johnson and articles editor Jonah Ogles at the recent Longreads/Atavist anniversary event in New York) and the rest of the team! Thanks also to Nicholas Thompson Evan Ratliff and Jefferson Rabb for founding such a storied magazine, and deep appreciation to Automattic for continuing to nurture longform narrative journalism. More than 20 years after I started in magazines, I'll never stop loving the form, and working with Seyward and crew is one of the great joys of my career.

We're excited to welcome 12 publishers to our latest cohort of the Revenue Development Program! During the beta phase of the program that we just completed, we learned that participants especially valued one-on-one coaching and group sessions focused on newsletter subscriber growth. They found tools and techniques on newsletter Campaigns, design and content, and ideas for managing lists and automations most impactful. Participants also told us they plan to keep using the wide range of tools we introduced, which they said boosted their confidence, focus, and strategic clarity. We also received feedback about areas for improvement and look forward to incorporating that into future cohorts!

We're here to fuel their motivation with strategies for newsletter subscriber growth, creating compelling reader revenue CTAs, and seamlessly integrating advertising and sponsorships. Special thanks to our coaches and trainers (Katie Mercer, Claudia L. Cruz, David Grant, Jeff Sonderman, Doug Ng, Steve Beatty) who will play a key role in guiding participants through the initial six-week sprint of the RDP to build and monetize loyal email audiences. 📣 We've officially launched our Revenue Development Program (RDP)! 📣 Funded by the Lenfest Institute’s Local News Infrastructure Fund, which was established with support from the Knight Foundation to help local news organizations engage their audiences and strengthen their digital revenue streams, the RDP offers hands-on training, one-on-one coaching, and peer support to help publishers grow their audience and revenue. ✨ The feedback from our two six-week pilot cohorts has been incredible. Here are just two highlights: “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘋𝘗 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘯𝘦𝘸𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. Future cohorts will explore other tracks on reader revenue and advertising/sponsorships that we are currently designing. There are 138 days until the U.S. presidential election. As elections grow in both consequence and complexity, the local newsrooms that do the critical work of informing and connecting local communities are more pressed for time and money than ever. That’s why Newspack is collaborating with the Knight Foundation and other organizations to creat the Knight Election Hub to help newsrooms cover the 2024 elections at the federal, state, and local levels. The hub is a collection of carefully selected products and services — like data, software, polling, training, and expertise. The Knight Foundation will add services throughout the summer. You can get access today if your newsroom meets the eligibility criteria explained in the article linked in the comments. Scott Klein is Newspack's Entrepreneur in Residence who's leading the charge on this election hub. Feel free to send him a message with any questions you have about this project!  #journalism #2024elections #elections
