Bye, Bye Birdie!

The Twitter - X Logo Change Debate: An Evolution or Devolution?

Change is inevitable. Change is refreshing. But sometimes, change can be...strange?

In a surprise move, Elon Musk announced that Twitter would change its logo to an "X". The updated logo received mixed reactions, with some users appreciating its bold and modern design, while others found it too simple and forgettable. Unlike the old logo, which featured circles, the new one is entirely composed of lines.

In the ever-evolving social media jungle, rebranding is a must to stay relevant. But it's crucial to consider the impact of this change on the brand's identity and the role logo design plays in it.

The Big Blue Bird: A Timeless Symbol of Connection

Twitter's old logo featured a charming blue bird, widely recognized as the symbol of the platform. The simplicity and elegance of the design allowed it to transcend language barriers, making it easily identifiable across diverse cultures and sizes. The old logo effectively conveyed the essence of Twitter as a platform for connecting people.

Why did the old logo work so well?

  1. Minimalistic: The old logo embraced a comforting minimalism, rendered with an approachable bird silhouette. The simplicity of the logo made it easy to maintain consistent brand recognition.

2. Versatile: The bird design made it highly versatile. With rounded edges, it was easy to recognize and remember and could be used in a variety of contexts without losing its impact.

3. Emotional Connection: Over time (close to two decades), the blue bird became synonymous with Twitter, fostering an emotional connection with users who associated it with real-time updates, news, and engaging conversations.

The All-New 'X'

An X with two strokes, one of which is outlined - this new logo can be interpreted in many ways, such as the intersection of ideas, the X-factor, or even the letter "X" itself.

Also, Elon Musk has always had a personal attachment to the letter X. (Remember Space X & X Æ A-12?)

Though it's a bold move to distance himself and the brand from previous leadership and brand identity, abandoning the bird logo could alienate Twitter's long-time users at a time when there are newer ‘threads’ to follow.

The 'X' logo design critique

  1. Ambiguity: The 'X' symbol lacks clarity in representing Twitter's core purpose. Unlike the old logo, this one looks too familiar and could be confused with other brands.
  2. The old Twitter logo was more visually appealing. The new X logo is much cleaner but could be seen as boring or bland.
  3. Loss of Brand Equity: Twitter's old logo held significant brand equity and user trust. As it does not have the same association with tweeting, abandoning it risks alienating loyal users.

With the new Threads app by Meta hitting the scene, it may seem like Twitter is feeling a bit of FOMO and trying to be like the cool kids to keep up with its direct competition. The ease of connecting Threads to Meta's other offerings, including Instagram and Facebook, could tempt users to explore alternatives.

But as with all changes, this could be an excellent opportunity for the brand to reinvent its image and narrative. If executed thoughtfully, it could signify a transformative phase for the brand and attract new audiences. The logo change could also be seen as a way to match the values and changes in the platform under Elon Musk's leadership. And there is always room for improvement and design iterations. Multiple alterations to the old Twitter logo over the decade have resulted in the blue bird logo we are all fond of.

Whether this was a great move or not, only time will tell. But what is your take on this change? Which logo design do you prefer and why? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
