Today's Facebook reminder. On this day, more than seven and a half years ago, I was knee-deep in overseeing Phase 1 of the NewSpace Systems South African facility expansion. And while that 'expansion' was limited to adding a second floor, I remember the excitement I felt at finally being 'big enough' to occupy a whole building! Since then, our success has necessitated many 'expansions' to our facility, and as we've grown space-constrained, even seen us bring online additional local sites. However, before this reminder, I'd forgotten. Despite being there, in the trenches, as we painstakingly fought and strove to build NewSpace to what it is today, I'd forgotten just how far we'd come in the hustle of solving that next problem and achieving that next audacious milestone. And so, as a reminder to both myself and you (the person who's hopefully made it to the end of this rather long post). Remember to celebrate those victories, no matter how seemingly inconsequential. Take the time to reflect on what you've accomplished along the way, irrespective of how far you may feel from achieving what you've set out to do. If you believe, as I do, that business is an infinite game (Simon Sinek fan here), then we should guard against the trap of being hyperfocused on the outcomes, which we all know are moving goalposts. Instead, let's remember to hyperfocus on the process. This week's solar eclipse got me thinking about the magic ✨ that can happen when we all come together. I didn’t have a great view this time around (so a friend sent me this pic from NY), but it still had an emotional impact as I watched everyone grabbing their glasses and listened to my son tell me about his experience with his classmates at school. I saw one back in 2017, in Seattle, when I was at Starbucks, and I loved how the rare phenomenon instantly turned a workday into a shared experience. We were all looking up at the sky with our special glasses on, with "Total Eclipse of the Heart 💜 " playing in the background – yes, a classic '70s throwback. (Before I looked it up, I thought it was an '80s tune – WOW! Time really flies!) It was pure, unadulterated fun fueled by a shared sense of curiosity and wonder. So, what can we learn from events like this? How can we tap into that same magic in the workplace? Here's what I think. Shared experiences, even small ones, can be incredibly powerful for team building. They foster a sense of connection, break down silos, and can even spark creativity. Even if it’s just a time to chat about everyone’s weekend before you start a meeting – create opportunities for your team to connect on a human level outside of their daily tasks. By fostering a sense of shared curiosity and experience, you can build a stronger, more engaged team.
