A friend asked me last week to help his niece decide if she should get a masters in digital marketing. Sadly, I said she might be better off sticking with her Marketing degree and focusing on working to gain experience and learning as much as she can from all the changes and releases from the big companies (you know who they are..) Digital marketing is changing every day and taking a 2 year program, might not give her all that she needs. Recently a marketer told me, "I can't wait to work on my own ideas." This sentiment resonated deeply with me. I've seen it all too often in small businesses where new marketers are brought in to implement a backlog of marketing ideas that the team has not had the time to execute. In these situations, these talented individuals find themselves in the role of 'implementers' rather than creators. They're tasked with bringing other people's ideas to life, which can be both exciting and frustrating. It's an opportunity to learn, to grow, but it can also feel like they're not fully utilizing their creative muscles or strategic thinking. This becomes particularly thorny when the strategies they are asked to implement aren't generating revenue. It can lead to frustration, because they are taking the heat for poor results while their bosses are picking the strategies. My advice to marketers? Embrace the challenge of implementing your bosses ideas. Use it as an opportunity to learn new styles of marketing. Show how your unique ideas can drive results, and meticulously document the results. My advice to business owners? Hold yourself accountable to your ideas and give your marketers the freedom to experiment and implement their own ideas. They may surprise you with their creativity and drive results beyond your expectations.
