"I remember the first Webcam. So the first streaming video was a coffee pot and it was literally a coffee pot. A guy had rigged up a camera, with a coffee pot down the hall in a CS department somewhere. So that he can see when the coffee pot was empty - to go refill it. It was pure utility for him. And then he put the coffee pot online - it was the first webcam. So we all just sat for a week and watched the coffee pot. " - Marc Andreessen on "Building Netscape & the Birth of the Browser" So many fun stories on the development of the early Internet from a16z “The Ben & Marc Show” podcast. https://lnkd.in/gX6uphGR Goes on to prove that early technology adopters are as much driven by utility as by the coolness factor. I have been down a few different AI rabbit holes this week - it seems to be showing up more and more in my day to day, it is even offering to help me write this post. Over the same few days, the industrial revolution has been the subject of a few of my favourite history podcasts. It has me wondering if the simultaneous fear and excitement the world has about the rapid development of artificial intelligence is aligned with what was felt over 250 years ago in Europe: the on-edge feeling that something big is happening, and how lucky are we to be a part of it counterbalanced with (justified) concern and resistance. I hope this revolution is guided by more empathy, public policy, and consideration for the human experience on this planet than its predecessors and that we do not forget that expansion and progress (often) come at a price.

🗣 "When it comes to the AI-first strategy, three distinct types of companies emerge," says Professor Paavo Ritala. 1. Digital tycoons: companies that have access to vast amounts of data, and their products are essentially data-driven. 2. Niche carvers: companies with expertise in a specific field, such as medical imaging or specific speech recognition. These companies understand regulations and the business within their niche. 3. Asset augmenters: companies that operate in the physical world. They own sophisticated machinery or other properties that allow them to collect data. Their exclusive advantage lies in their understanding and ownership of assets from which they can collect data. I truly believe there is no net-zero without GaN. It may sound like an overstatement, but it’s not. If we don’t find a way to increase efficiencies, we won’t be able to decarbonize and meet those net-zero goals. Technology will only consume more energy over time, particularly as AI and “smart” capabilities continue to grow. And, as I told [Daniel Nenni] on the [SemiWiki.com] podcast, that’s where #GaN comes in – the material is going to be absolutely necessary to handle all the power needs of AI and help us make progress on net-zero goals. Thanks to Dan for the opportunity and check out the full episode for more about AI, GaN, and what’s next for material.
