I know lots of PMs are worrying about GenAI and what it will do to our profession. So, I decided to ask GenAI a question about this - and got some great answers! I asked ChatGPT: "GenAI tools, such as yourself, are going to increase the productivity of product managers by, let's say 20% in 2024 and 2025. What are some ways product managers can best use that additional productivity to create MORE than 20% more value for their companies?" And guess what it said? It said, essentially, "Use the additional productivity to do more of the things you're already supposed to be doing, and you'll create a lot of value." Specifically, it suggested focusing on three things, all of which we know we should be doing and aren't always, and all of which GenAI can augment our efforts on: 1. Enhanced customer insights and personalization. Make your product solve your prospect's problems better, make it more intuitive, spend more time on testing and validating your designs, and make better decisions to meet user needs. Personalized experience often ramp up engagement a huge amount - and now we have a little more bandwidth (and tooling) to do that better. 2. Fast iteration and innovation It's not just you who is 20% more productive. Your dev team is as well. So they can get stuff out faster, including prototypes (often MUCH faster) so you can validate new ideas. And they can get finished code out faster with the help of the AI tools. But you can also now spend more time, and *better* time, on exploring new ideas and innovative concepts. 3. Data-driven decision-making Using AI to do more advanced analytics on your data *might* reveal insights - or simply generate ideas - that were difficult to see before. (Note: This is a highly abridged answer. ChatGPT had a lot more to say!) I'd add one more thing that ChatGPT didn't mention: Your competitors are already doing this. Both other PMs and other companies. This isn't just "a good way to use your 20% additional productivity." It's survival for us *and* our companies. At a previous job, I remember sitting down with the person who managed our Ad Sales while he showed his giant Excel file he had set up to oversee everything. He didn’t consider himself technical because it was “just Excel” but the functionality he had in there could have easily been repackaged and sold as a fully-functional SaaS application! ChatGPT and the AI tools that _already_ exist open up a entirely new area of problems that can be solved without writing any code or “being technical”. Everyone has workflows and processes that are specific to them and if you can help them leverage AI tools into those processes, you don’t have to worry about creating a one-size-fits-all product AND everyone gets better, more personalized solutions. Yesterday I walked through how we use Chat GPT to synthesise over 700 responses from client research in 20 minutes during a consulting session. 🤯🤯 I've mentioned a few times, and I'll keep banging this drum, but nearly all of you don't do enough client research and it's a little embarrassing. You'd rather guess what your clients think and how they feel, rather than ask them exactly what they think and exactly how they feel.. about your solution. The problem with most survey and client research is that you typically limit the survey to a dropdown box instead of a free text field. Because before ChatGPT, I also didn't have the capacity to filter through 700 responses quickly - to get the insights I needed. But now that's changed. With Chat GPT, we've changed how we handle client feedback. Instead of shying away from open-ended questions, we embrace them. We ask our clients clients' to spill their thoughts in their own words, no holds barred. And guess what? They do. They give us gold – raw, unfiltered insights that are like striking oil in a barren field. Then, we let Chat GPT do its magic. It analyses, categorises, and summarises these responses in a way that's not just fast, but incredibly insightful. We're talking about nuances and patterns that would take a human team days, if not weeks, to uncover. So, what's the result? We're no longer guessing. We're not throwing darts in the dark hoping to hit the bullseye. We're making informed decisions based on what our clients actually want and need. And that, my friends, is a game changer. The headline I read went something like ...‘at one organisation a study* found ChatGPT users finished 12.2% more tasks on average, completed tasks 25.1% more quickly, and produced results of 40% higher quality compared to those without AI support.'              A ChatGPT enterprise licence is ~£16/month. Unlike most emerging technology it is simple to set up and use. What is not to like? What is not to embrace? The AI landscape can in my mind be simplified thus: Type 1 : Generic AI like ChatGPT’s  based in the cloud and accessible by all. The engine operates on limited user datasets and/or publicly available data and is driven by simple user prompting. The monthly package typically has usage limitations and ownership restrictions on the output. Type 2 : Bespoke AI engines(cloud or on-premise) developed for specific organisation/sector needs, ingesting potentially huge business specific dataset to perform focused activities. Stand-alone or integrated into an eco-system. So at your next board meeting take the plunge, establish a working group and see what benefits AI could bring. *Harvard Business School
