Why is OTel such a big deal? Observability is a huge market that produces lots of big companies (DataDog, Splunk, NewRelic, etc). In each case, the vendor has you instrument your code with their proprietary stuff (SDK, APIs, etc) that capture your logs and send them to their backend which you can later query. This proprietary stuff is sticky, as it takes work to swap out, and annoying, as you end up with lots of vendors in there. OTel is an open source standard that allows you to instrument once, send anywhere*, or at least to any vendor that supports it, and more do every day (although maybe none better than honeycomb.io). It's also great tech, catering to many modes of capture (traces, metrics, logs). Austin Parker, Honeycomb's director of open source is an Open Telemetry maintainer, having been with the project from nearly inception (long awesome story which he covers). I was surprised to hear from him, among other things, that companies are now choosing OTel first and later their observability vendor. *I will never tire of reusing Java's tired tagline in all the wrong places.
Join Austin Parker from honeycomb.io and Eric Anderson as they dive deep on OpenTelemetry, the open-source observability framework for collecting and managing telemetry data. Find out why OpenTelemetry has become the second fastest growing project in the CNCF! Listen at https://lnkd.in/eJXDUNqJ
