Happy Fourth of July! Today I’m happy to announce that thanks to my supporters, I have earned the LinkedIn “Top Economics Voice” badge. Today also marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress, a document that reminds us that in America just government is derived from the consent of the governed, that limited government and states rights are good, and that taxes and government monopolies (esp on tea, but also on schools / roads / utilities / health care) are bad. This feels like a big year, with elections challenging big government indebted incumbents in the US, UK, France, and Chile (and soon Canada), plus some business-friendly growth oriented leaders consolidating gains in Italy, Taiwan and India. To some these feel like existential threats but if you read enough history you realize that democracies are always reinventing themselves, usually for the better. They have been for 250 years. It is perhaps appropriate that on this American holiday, voters in the UK and France are also voting in consequential elections. As a great president (clear top five) once said: “Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist. And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night.
