The #creator career path is still pretty new and fairly uncharted. But this year has shown how it is maturing, with veteran creators like Matthew Patrick and Tom Scott stepping away from regularly making videos, even retiring in Patrick’s case. “I think it’s exciting that we are at a point now where creators can have succeeded enough where they are able to retire if they want to, or are able to take a step back, make less content. For a long time and for a lot of creators, you kind of have to be on that treadmill forever in order to pay the rent next month,” said Hank Green, a veteran creator in his own right and co-founder of the annual creator confab VidCon. #vidcon Story by Tim Peterson

A very loud takeaway from all the recent creators “Quitting” Youtube is that you have to find a place where you are content - and that “more” doesn’t equate to better. Reflecting on these departures brings us to an important realization about finding contentment in our work. It's not always about chasing more views, more subscribers, more fame, the next milestone, or climbing the next mountain. As these creators demonstrate, even with enormous success, there comes a point where one must seek fulfillment beyond the constant grind for more. Reminds me of this quote "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." It's a powerful reminder that true contentment comes from within, not from external metrics of success. (Also, MKBHD isn’t one of the creators quitting Youtube, he did have an awesome video that he published recently on the topic, you should watch it!) In this ever-evolving TV landscape, I'm still feeling inspired—I believe that we're standing at the precipice of a new era in content creation. Despite the uncertainties, I'm convinced it's our time to thrive. If you're like me and just have non stop ideas, then let's kickstart the new year by doing what we do best: letting our imaginations run wild. I'd love to power into the new year with some serious creative synergy. A litte about me....I've been immersed in the world of video creation since I was a kid in the 80's, lugging around my parents' massive camcorder to make everything from commercials to music videos. Over the years, I've dipped my toes into various formats and industries, always fueled by an unrelenting stream of creative ideas. Now, I'm diving deeper into scripted content—movies, series, you name it—just to get these non-stop concepts out of my head and onto paper. I don't confine myself to any particular genre, platform, or constraints when it comes to my creativity. Throughout my career/job, I have always had ideas flowing. For years, I was too focused on the job at hand to write. In the coming months, I hope to take advantage of the amazing community LinkedIn offers and bounce some scripted (and nonscripted) ideas off other creatives. If you're as passionate about creation as I am and you're into a roll-up-your-sleeves brainstorming session, then let's channel that creative fire into something truly spectacular this year. I started Syncbak, now Zeam Media, 15 years ago today, March 1, 2009. My career started at 1901 Avenue of the Stars (see pic) in the mailroom at Charles Schwab in Century City. Thinking I’d take up acting, that was the perfect neighborhood to pick up left behind copies of Variety. I’d sold Decisionmark a couple of years earlier and painfully rode out my 24-month contract until the bitter end, February 28, 2009, at 11:00 P.M. CST. That was the moment I became unemployed. More importantly, it was the moment I became happy. The only scary part, quite frankly, was that for the first time since 1978, I was not being paid by anyone. Even in the late eighties, when I’d gone back to the University of Iowa to finish my degree, my brother in-law Scott paid me to pour beer at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. My family was all for starting Syncbak. The life of an entrepreneur can be hard on families and I knew it. So, to start our new company, I needed three things: First, I needed a plan for what I was going to build. Simple. I’d been thinking about putting broadcast television on the Internet since 1996. Let’s build a technology to do just that. It’s time. Second, I needed a name for my new company. I decided to call it MadBak, in tribute to my grandmother, Madelyn Baker Perry. The name MadBak eventually gave way to Syncbak, but the idea of being passionate, kind, hardworking, honest and loyal (like my grandma) will always be central traits at Zeam. Lastly, I needed venture capital, but I didn’t want VC funding until I had things totally baked. To get things baked, I knew that for the foreseeable future I had to go off the grid, to have no distractions. I needed to spend my days working on the technology, patents, business models and presentations (pitches). Just a few mornings into MadBak, my family said “You need to get out of the house.” They were right, so I rented a small room in a 19th century funeral parlor and got up and went to work every day. It cost me $285 per month. It was a magic office. Some mornings I’d show up and there’d be things leaning against my door; a printer, surge protector, tape, scissors, paper, stapler, ethernet cabling, router, desk chair (that looked very familiar), grease board and other random office things, all of which MadBak needed. My team knew that after 12 months I would be coming for them so they set me up real nice. Today they are Zeamers. My grandma had taught me growing up to just be kind to people. I’ve tried to live up to that for the whole of my career. I’ll give myself a B+, but striving for an A+. Always. Writing these few words today has been hard. I’ve been hung on this last paragraph for an hour, fighting back the tears as I think about the journey we’ve been on and the many people who’ve helped us along the way, people who asked for nothing in return. Working with large and small creators has been an amazing experience for our team since our founding over two years ago. Both types of creators -- at least the ones we work work -- have a lot in common. They obsess over their work. They care about their personal image. They want to make sure they satisfy their audience and business partners. They spend every waking hour thinking about the next project. This level of devotion and commitment is quite impressive, and it inspires us every day. When we first started this venture, we were told by many friends and acquaintances, "good luck dealing with those personalities", implying that creatives were impossible to work with. We haven't found that at all. In fact, the opposite. It's refreshing to work with such talent and have something major in common with our own team; working tirelessly to get results. So, to all of the creators we partner with: thank you. Thank you for inspiring us to keep doing the work we do.
