Whether companies choose to staff an official CAIO role or not, it is critical to align AI risk/value deliberately, ensuring complementary policies and practice across the business, promoting innovation/experimentation while mitigating risks. It is aiding astronauts in their daily life, ensuring optimal communication with the ground control, predicting and mitigating potential risks, and even conducting research. It is also paving the way for autonomous spacecraft and rovers, taking space exploration to new, uncharted territories. One such example is NASA’s Mars Rover, Perseverance, which is equipped with an AI system that allows it to navigate the Martian terrain autonomously. Another is CIMON, an AI-powered assistant on the International Space Station, designed to aid astronauts with their work and even boost their morale. Blue = historical development in data & models, Orange = beliefs on EO trends My thoughts The focus of AI algorithms has shifted between being model-centric and data-centric over time! But, I believe a single focus is insufficient at this stage! Instead, there must be a balanced emphasis on both data quality and model innovation. Maybe the era of data-model-centric approaches?! The rise of foundation models, such as our pioneering #SpectralGPT and other remarkable contributions from colleagues at Microsoft, IBM, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, European Space Agency - ESA, Technical University of Munich, and others in the field of #EarthObservation, might be a proof of this statement. It is still wonderful to see that innovations in our community are led by universities and public sectors (as well as SMEs), and that innovation is not fully controlled by big tech companies! This fantastic synergy (competition!) pushes our community forward! There are so many other things in this figure ... P.S. The use of AI can be traced back to much earlier than the 1950s. Here, by the birth of AI, I refer to the distinct field that is often attributed to a workshop held at Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956.

The concept of responsible AI gained significant attention in the late 2010s and early 2020s, and with generative-adversarial approaches as one of the catalysts. During this period, concerns about AI biases, fairness, transparency and accountability began to gain prominence. This era also saw the release of ethical guidelines like the IEEE’s ”Ethically Aligned Design” (2016) and the ACM’s updated Code of Ethics (2018). In the early 2020s, regulatory efforts intensified with the European Commission’s ”Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI” (2019) and the OECD.AI’s AI Principles (2019). Major tech companies like Google and Microsoft established dedicated responsible AI teams and initiatives. The concept of responsible AI continued to evolve, integrating into AI development pipelines and emphasizing both data quality and model innovation. Standardization efforts by organizations like ISO and educational initiatives further promoted responsible AI practices, addressing ethical considerations such as fairness, transparency, and bias mitigation. "Working together, NASA and IBM Research have developed a new artificial intelligence model to support a variety of weather and climate applications. The new model – known as the Prithvi-weather-climate foundational model – uses artificial intelligence (AI) in ways that could vastly improve the resolution we’ll be able to get, opening the door to better regional and local weather and climate models.  Foundational models are large-scale, base models which are trained on large, unlabeled datasets and can be fine-tuned for a variety of applications. The Prithvi-weather-climate model is trained on a broad set of data – in this case NASA data from NASA’s Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2)– and then makes use of AI learning abilities to apply patterns gleaned from the initial data across a broad range of additional scenarios." https://lnkd.in/dxNZ7fsE
