Research Administrator

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Research Administrator position assists with Pre and Post award administrative activities required to support sponsored project efforts for research faculty within the College of Health Sciences. The range of duties requires an understanding of University policies and procedures as well as applicable Federal, State, and other sponsor guidelines and regulations as related to sponsored projects. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work independently and as part of a team and who has demonstrated the ability to be flexible, adaptable, and responsive.

Level Scope:

Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.

Essential Functions:

60% of the time the Research Administrator must:

  • Interpret information in requests for applications/proposals and communicate critical information to principal investigators.
  • Manage Pre and Post award activities.
  • Coordinate and work closely with OSP.
  • Ensures all project expenses follow sponsor guidelines and University policies.
  • Follow internal policies and procedures for project administrative activities.
  • Frequently handle sensitive and/or confidential issues.
  • Ensure expenses posted to sponsored project account are allocable and allowable.
  • Examines and evaluates assigned awards for fiscal status.
  • Submit, monitor/track transactions (i.e., A/P, travel, payment requests, subrecipient invoices, HR/Payroll documentation, JEs, BARs).
  • Review balances at closeout.

35% of the time the Research Administrator must:

  • Coordinate meetings with faculty, staff or other units as needed to mitigate issues.
  • Flag problematic clauses, errors in budget numbers, incorrect start and end dates, etc. for correction.
  • Assist in disseminating information regarding changes to research policy and procedures.
  • Provide data to the Dean’s Office or Associate Dean for Research as requested to evaluate and assess the college’s research enterprise.

5% of the time the Research Administrator must:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance is preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, set and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated high level of organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated proactive nature with reliable follow through.
  • Demonstrated ability to trouble-shoot and solve problems using sound judgment.
  • Able to make decisions within the guidelines of the Institution and Sponsoring agencies.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail, consistency in self-checking work and commitment to accuracy and quality are required.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and timely.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research Administration experience preferred.

Salary starting at $53,456.00 annually, commensurate with experience.
