Strategic Partnerships manages the most significant enterprise relationships across American Express, with a mission to build differentiated partnerships that unlock the potential of American Express’ strategic relationships to drive growth and innovation. The team is responsible for defining a multi-year partnership strategy, supporting key negotiations and projects, and driving new business opportunities globally with our largest Blue Box partners. It exists to deliver against three core objectives: (1) foster and maintain external senior level relationships to drive partner strategies, (2) lead the partner strategy that maximizes value to customers and the enterprise, and (3) bring the best of Amex to drive growth and innovation.

This role will report to the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and work closely with the Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, to drive strategic enterprise goals across the Digital Giant portfolio with a focus on Apple and Meta. Success in this role will require developing deep knowledge of the role these companies play in the digital economy, an ability to drive collaboration across various business units internally to achieve partnership outcomes, and comfort working in white space as we look to create new sources of value for our joint customers.

As Strategic Partnerships Director, you will help shape the future of Amex by defining winning strategies, running strategic deal negotiations, and driving innovative partnerships across a broad range of areas including digital payments, digital advertising, cardmember benefits, loyalty, and B2B payments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategy & Thought Leadership: Develop account strategy and priorities for partners in the portfolio; syndicate the priorities and opportunity areas across key internal partners
  • Relationship Management: Build and develop key relationships with the partners to enhance the partnership and act as a primary point of contact for the enterprise.
  • External Intelligence: Establish yourself as an expert in the partners’ businesses and serve as a single point of partner insight within American Express as well as building knowledge of market and competitive trends.
  • Issue Resolution: Work closely with internal partners to address partner issues; ensure closure of key issues.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Build excellent relationships with a range of stakeholders across Amex who are critical to the success of the partnerships and work closely with them to meet partnership and business objectives.
  • Project Management: Maintain a consistent pulse and overview of initiatives and discussions with the partner across the enterprise, and track progress against completion and intervene to course correct when initiatives are off track.
  • Negotiation & New Business Development: Lead major enterprise negotiations and support new business development opportunities from ideation, business case development and execution, in close partnership with key internal stakeholders.
  • Leadership: Provide outstanding leadership and coaching skills, including managing a direct report.

Qualifications:

  • Experience managing external partnership relationships through business development, negotiations, and issue resolution.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with and influence internal partners across the enterprise to identify and deliver complex partnership opportunities.
  • Ability to concisely communicate complex topics including to senior leadership.
  • Strong strategic thinker who can translate market trends, partner priorities and internal focus areas into actionable strategic roadmaps.
  • Strong financial and analytical acumen; ability to translate data into insight and excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong will to win, attention to detail, focus on efficient management and willingness to roll up your sleeves.
  • High degree of intellectual curiosity, comfort with ambiguity, ability to bring structure to “blue sky” opportunities.
  • Ability to excel in a highly dynamic, fast-paced and ambiguous space. Highly proactive and comfortable acting with autonomy.
  • Industry experience in the payments and digital payments space a plus.

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
