Associate Outside Plant (OSP) Field Coordinator

Job Brief

No experience necessary. Candidates must be in Indiana or Michigan.

The OSP (Outside Plant) Fielder supports engineering services through the detailed collection of information from the job site. This position requires rapidly obtaining a working knowledge in all technical aspects of OSP fiber and copper networks. The successful candidate is responsible for identifying existing field design and layout of OSP telecommunications network to include aerial, buried, and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, manhole/handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities. Telecommunications systems are often located near high voltage power systems and the candidate must learn to identify and work safely in proximity to such systems. ATCO is willing to train a motivated candidate with no prior fielding experience.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work in fiber build area and identify homes, businesses, and multiple dwelling units that require fiber extension.
  • Acquire field data to be used for designing network routes.
  • Identify optimum path for extending fiber and terminal tails.
  • Provide detailed field notes to allow construction work prints to be generated in CAD.
  • Capable of managing own workload and prioritizing multiple field engineering assignments.
  • Capturing photographs of existing telecom facilities and uploading them into databases.
  • Operating Katapult in a work from home environment to assist with fielding and pole annotations.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate fielding applications to assist with capturing data.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn new technical systems and tools.
  • Ability to work safely in high traffic areas, public walkways, and right of way.
  • Ability to resolve problems following standard practices, using judgment within defined policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to work outdoors most of the time.
  • Ability to travel within Indiana and Michigan.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe driving record and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Experience in fiber-optic/telecommunications/telecom/Power construction industry, desired.
  • Knowledge of outside plant activities (Fiber Cable Design, Pole Line Construction, Conduit System design), desired.
  • Familiar with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), ESRI and shapefile functionality, desired.
  • Experience using the following systems: IKE, Katapult, or any other standard fielding application, desired.
  • Experience using the following systems: Infinium, Varasset, Sitetracker, IQGeo, NDS, FROGS, and ArcGIS, desired.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires walking 2-4 miles per day.
  • Works outside extensively and may be exposed to all types of weather, such as heat, cold, sun, rain, and other weather conditions.
  • May carry equipment such as GPS unit, measuring stick, measuring wheel, and other handheld devices weighing 5-20 lbs.
  • May be required to read engineering designs which use color coding to denote telecom routes.
