Fresh off an enlightening two-day event at The B2SMB Institute Leaders Forum in Sonoma, I'm buzzing with insights from "The New Sell" theme. This was a deep dive into the evolving landscape of corporate strategies targeting small businesses in an age increasingly shaped by AI.   A highlight was hearing directly from a panel of SMB leaders. Their perennial challenge? Staffing. Yet, amidst discussions on AI, a unanimous sentiment emerged: while AI's efficiency is welcome within their operations, they're wary of it becoming the go-to customer service solution for big corporations. The thought of losing human touch in interactions with their large suppliers struck a chord of concern, fearing an escalation in impersonal service as corporations eye AI for cost-cutting.   One memorable remark redefined AI not as Artificial Intelligence but as Assisted Intelligence, emphasizing its role in augmenting human capabilities rather than replacing them. Another poignant observation warned against letting AI amplify inefficiencies; a bad sales email becomes exponentially worse when AI sends it to a thousand prospects instead of one, with predictably dismal outcomes.   A standout moment for me was the unveiling of a compelling survey by a globally renowned expert in small business. This survey sought small businesses' perceptions of large corporations, focusing on key aspects such as trust, perceived care, understanding, and the strength of their relationships with these larger entities. Surprisingly, the average score that small businesses gave for their corporate suppliers across these metrics was a mere 45%.   Conversely, when large corporations were posed similar questions—regarding the level of trust they believed small businesses had in them, how much they thought small businesses felt cared for, and their understanding of small business needs—the average score soared to 85%. This stark disparity underscores a significant misalignment in perceptions.   This finding serves as a wake-up call for large corporations. It's clear that there's a pressing need to bridge this gap. Corporations must go beyond mere transactions and foster genuine engagement, actively listening and swiftly responding to the feedback from their small business counterparts. The path to overcoming this disconnect lies in consistent and meaningful interaction, ensuring that large corporations truly comprehend and address the needs of small businesses.   The journey to tapping into the vast potential of the global small business market isn't as simple as deploying AI. It requires a human touch—building trust and truly understanding small business needs. Assuming to know it all won't cut it; genuine connections will. GPT 4o is exceptional, and CEOs should spend time this week in opportunity discovery sessions with senior leaders and key data team members. Here are some ideas to get the conversation started. Home improvement and auto parts retailers can build an app where users can upload images of a repair and get back the steps and products necessary to complete it. This works with GPT 4o today. Version 2 should generate images and videos that walk people through the repair using context from their images or real-time video. This will be working in less than a year. Video conference apps like Zoom and Teams should implement conversation or whiteboard to work product features. Pseudocode or requirements discussion to code (works in GPT 4o). Product discussion or schetch to CAD. Streaming services should develop apps where characters (not the actors or actresses who play them) from shows act as fashion advisors and help select outfits or products using their own aesthetics. Technology now operates in multiple modalities (image, video, speech, text, perspective) and dimensions. The highest-value opportunities are still on the table, but they won’t be for much longer. Move quickly from opportunity to product. The best ideas come from putting in the reps with Generative AI. Builders are becoming innovators because the building process reveals avenues for exploration. Keep AI strategists and product managers close. They have the hybrid capabilities to be value-centric innovators whose ideas are feasible and generate significant returns. Historically... Most high-growth digital brands use a composable digital ecosystem. It does take time & expertise to implement and integrate all of the tools. However, the feature set & flexibility allow brands to scale faster. (Image below of a composable ecosystem) While... Established non-digital brands use suite-based tools like Adobe. While not feature-rich, implementation of a single suite offers a reduced implementation/security risk. I am starting to see a shift where established non-digital brands are going composable. I wonder if suite-based solutions are starting to fade in popularity.
