What do you do if you're a recent graduate trying to shine in a cutthroat PR job market?
Find opportunities not to just interview for a role, but to get to know people who work at your dream firms or hold positions you'd like to reach in the future. When starting out, I had the opportunity to do an informational interview at a big marketing agency. I focused on not trying to get a job, but learning from members of that organization. I even had someone sit down and make suggested edits to my resume. This experience gave me that inside perspective that helped me stand-out for my first job, but then also help to guide the way I sought promotions and other job opportunities in the future.

What do you do if your clients or customers are difficult to handle?
Working within PR/marketing agencies, it was critical to establish the expectations of the partnership between the client and the agency. Defining what makes a good partner and how that impacts the program reframes the relationship. This can make a difficult client more likely to meet you halfway and provide the needed support to get a job done.

How can PR professionals use data analytics to target journalists?
Data analytics can do more than just help you to understand what a journalist may be interested in. It can also help to map out the gaps in their coverage today - topics or questions they are interested in digging into, but might not have the answers to. This helps you stand out from other pitches by offering something new, different, but relevant to their writing. You can also use analytics to better understand the team they might work in - how do they communicate on social media, partner on articles or attribute to each other's pieces? This gives you even more opportunities to find the right personalized topic.
