The Netflix Culture Deck got an update! 🔥 I find this to be really cool. The culture deck I read when I started 2.5 years ago is different from the one you’ll read today. They say that change is hard, but change is also a signal. To me, this signals growth, maturity, and something that is actually a living, breathing thing. It’s incredible that a company will let all its employees input feedback for its revision. This shows that if there is something that works well, let’s elevate it. If we’re not acting on something, let’s remove it. And if we’re operating in a different way, let’s optimize it. I get asked if the culture deck is what we hope to be as a company or if it’s it really how we are. And it’s the latter. This is who we are as a company and what we expect everyone to be and do so we can do the best work of our lives. Netflix is one of the best places I’ve ever worked and I’ve worked in a lot of cool places in my career. In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve felt the most challenged and have grown in my craft. I love being able to truly collaborate with so many people while still having the autonomy to manage my desk the way that works for me so I’m moving the needle in the best interest of the company. I get to bring my whole self here. And while it’s not always a walk in the park, I feel supported when I need it. In the past week, I've booked $27,000 worth of deals between my THREE influencers. I would say that is a pretty solid start for a Talent Manager who has faced Industry burnout for the past 3 years. I'm telling y'all this as proof that you don't need a giant roster to make money in this industry. I'm exhausted. Working three jobs and full-time mom life is kicking my butt! As someone that has been job searching for about a year now, after numerous rewrites of my resume and countless resume experts reviewing and providing conflicting feedback ... I am exhausted. Too much information, not enough information, "in our expert opinion, this is the optimized layout", " your design is visually uneven", etc.. 😵 I wonder if recruiters see my pharmacy background and immediately move along without taking an extra second to see my transferrable skills. I basically developed a career in pharmacy by "accident". I became really good in a field that I had 0 interest in while in college so I could pay the bills... imagine what I can do in the field I am actually interested in? * if you are a recruiter in the gaming field reading this, I give my 110% for jobs I am not too interested in, I would give my 200% and then some for you.👍😉 * I know it is up to me to make sure the recruiters understand my education and transferable skills, hence my multiple rewrites to try and get it right. It is definitely not for lack or trying ...

Me just vibin’ with the news and reading the posts of what people think is going on. IYKYK. But in all seriousness, I spent time with colleagues again yesterday and there are some of us who LOVE our job, love what we get to do, and what we are trying to accomplish for Netflix Games. We see the vision, we’re bought into the mission, and we are patient. I say patient because, in a world where the grind is glamorized and bias to action is real, we know games. We know that they are complex and intricate. We know that it takes a different kind of technical prowess. We know they are hard to make. And even while we’re patient, we still have the self-awareness to know that the industry won’t wait for anyone because of how quickly things are moving. So that means we have to action strategically. I’ve said it before, but I will say it again and with full conviction. I LOVE my job and I love Netflix Games. Call me crazy, drunk on Kool-aid, delusional, too much. I don’t care. Excitement doesn’t even begin to describe what I see and experience on the inside. There is also too much negative sh*t in the industry and that’s all we hear about. I want to change the narrative and bring joy to the world. I’ll do that through games, even if I have to be the underdog. That’s fine. It’s not the first time. Netflix has Games. (And we do we have GTA)

Some of my favorite questions to receive, and yes I answer them all. Hi? (while I love hello's, please give me some context!) Are you a recruiter? Do you work at Tempo? I'm not familiar with that technology, but very strong with (Insert Tech), can we shift the project to this? There are some others, but they start a little too aggressive sometimes so I'd rather not share those. Make your job search easier, your first message should include exactly what you want to ask, several back and forth messages are draining if there is no context. People generally recommend reaching out with a personalized message, and yes that would definitely stand out, but I don't mind if you get straight to the point as well. The market is tough right now so I fully understand if you want to save time and not create something personalized every time, just make sure there's enough there for me to know what you're asking me. Also, you never need to send me a cover letter, whether applying or messaging me directly. I'll read it, but never ask for one, save the time! Happy Wednesday Folks!

Fellow job seekers, here is a tip I recently discovered to help tailor your cover letter to the job(s) you are applying for: If you are using ChatGPT to help craft a cover letter, you can attach the job post and Chat GPT will tailor the cover letter to the company and position you're applying for. This is a big help, but you must still personalize it with your related information, thoughts, and experience.

With the recent challenges in the film industry in Los Angeles, many freelance IATSE members including myself are exploring new opportunities outside of movie and TV production work. Transitioning to roles in marketing or video positions has become something I've been wanting to pursue this year. Creating a resume that aligns with the expectations of companies seeking Marketing Directors or Creative Directors can be a significant challenge though. Adapting skills from the entertainment industry to meet the requirements of these roles is crucial for a successful transition. 💡 A thought on interview prep 💡 Happy Friday y'all! With companies opening up more roles as the year unfolds, I've been marinating on more folx getting into the interview process these days (YAY!). There are so many good tips and prep exercises for interviewing. One thing that gets missed or not talked about much is : Authenticity. My sense is most of us want to represent our true selves. And, I think sometimes that can get lost in the nerves, overthinking and subconscious desire to people please. We have a lot of people who are really in need of work. And when we are in scarcity mindset, we can lose ourselves. Here's my idea: as part of your prep exercises- spend a couple of minutes on the prompt: What do you want to convey about YOU? What makes you special? Maybe you are: - optimistic - witty - compassionate - outspoken (aka, push against status quo) - thoughtful - a great cheerleader - resilient How do you wish these attributes to shine through during your interview process? With the right company and in the right role, these are the things they will WANT in their next candidate. It can increase your chances of strong alignment with the company culture and team. Don't hide yourself, you're awesome.

Well folks, I think it’s finally time to use LinkedIn for its purpose: I am officially asking my growing network for help in finding my next role! (I don’t know why it feels so vulnerable to ask for help in finding a job when that’s literally what this platform is for, but here we are.) I’m a social media strategist/manager/content producer with 9+ years of experience developing story-forward digital content for creative brands who want to connect with real people. Often these titles can mean different things to different people, so here’s a quick list of things I have extensive experience in leading and developing for clients and brands: original graphic design (Canva), content curation/creation for all major platforms, copywriting, web design, brand development and design, producing/filming/editing videos for Reels and TikTok (videos which have generated 10 million+ views and consistently increased account engagements well over 100%), community management and engagement, and creative direction and strategy. In addition, I’ve taught social media marketing at the university level. I do not “eat, sleep, and breathe” social media (see: boundaries), but I am chronically online enough to the point where I could tell you about the latest TikTok rabbit hole involving an amateur filmmaker claiming to have a project with A24, Duo’s biggest celebrity crush, the trend of de-influencing, and the origin of a viral sound regarding Chick-fil-a sauce. Additionally, I hold a M.A. in Cinema Studies. This, combined with my penchant for doom scrolling (see: needs boundaries), means I have extensive knowledge of both film and pop culture. I also just wrapped up teaching a six week Film Studies course at Whitworth University, and currently serve as an assistant for feature film programming at the Brooklyn Film Festival. My ideal role would allow me to be hands-on in the creative process and would combine my passion for social media marketing with my excitement for all things film/entertainment (from helping new audience members to discover incredible work to uplifting new filmmakers, and more). I’m ready to step into a new role that challenges me creatively and allows me to both learn from mentors and serve as a mentor to others, but I really need help from my network! I’m an expert Headhunter but I wouldn’t be without my internal recruiting experience. It’s why my whole thing is being your external, internal recruiter, even if it’s “just” on a contingency/pay by hire basis. Studios use me because getting to know them goes beyond a call and a few instant messages. Sure, what you’d expect from any good recruiter is there.  - 3-4 hand picked profiles, all of which you’d want to interview. - Effective advertising that isn’t just a job description ctrl c & ctrl v - Time and pain saved in the recruiting process. But by taking the time to build a true working relationship with studios, I not only become informed in their culture, goals, and ethos. I become an active participant in it. It helps that I’ve been in production pipelines myself as a designer because I ‘get it’. That means, we’re having discussions surrounding: - When to consider expanding the team. - Planning for succession and future growth. - Positively evolving culture. - Upskilling existing staff to meet evolving needs. - Establishing an end-to-end recruitment process tailored to their studio's specific configuration. - Ensuring policies and procedures align with the studio's objectives. - How to focus your Talent Attraction strategy and Recruitment Advertising. If I think a studio could get along fine by tweaking a few things and NOT use my services long term, I tell them. It’s as simple as that. I recently posted about a job opportunity, emphasizing the requirement to live in the Los Angeles area with no exceptions. In just 18 hours, I received 120 applications, but only 2 were from LA. Unfortunately, the majority of applicants did not meet the basic requirements and lacked relevant experience. This experience shed light on why some recruiters may avoid LinkedIn applications. The high number of applicants from countries like Kenya and Pakistan was shocking and disappointing. The amount of applicants from people with little to no relevant experience was just, wow. Do people READ at all? It's disheartening to realize the challenges of securing a suitable candidate through LinkedIn applications. Ive submitted hundreds of applications via Linkedin for roles I have 100% experience for and have done successfully for over a decade and can see how my application doesn't get "viewed". I have to wonder if its because of the amount of spam that is going around. I wonder if there is anything that can be done about this.

Anyone looking for work desperately right now will know that getting any sort of offer for interview or attention to your resume will make you eager to hop in and give it a shot. I want to make sure people know that there are scams out there, but not in the obvious way you might think. I have gotten two messages from companies who have taken my resume from sites, presumably linkedin and indeed. I never actually applied to these jobs, and they will offer an interview or meeting quickly without actually telling you what the company does or the job title. One of these, I attended a meeting that was just a fancy video with a woman talking about numbers in a very roundabout way. Upon looking at the pdf provided it was very much a pyramid scheme - and despite them apparently having looked at my resume and deeming me a good fit, after the webinar I was asked to fill out an application with my resume. This company also relentlessly emailed and texted me afterward as if they never had before. They are just spamming people hoping to get a pyramid player. Another of these, which I got just this morning, is a text message that says to sign up for an interview on a link they've provided. Upon looking up the only clue to what their company was, I found reddit post after reddit post talking about the scam that is this agency. One person even got this "job", but was asked to pay a $600 training fee and work 5 weeks free labor. I even looked up a full name dropped in the text, supposedly the director, who has a LinkedIn profile with no profile picture. Get this, though. That linkedin profile had a callback to the PREVIOUS company that I attended a webinar for. There are MANY "companies" looking to hook you into a pyramid scheme, take your money, take your information. Please please please be wary about these. They mainly parade as insurance companies. Stay vigilant and if something seems vague or flashy, think twice. I don't think it's wise for me to blast these specific companies publicly for fear of backlash, but if you're curious specifics please dm me. #insurance #sales #scam #jobsearch

This is a post I had never hoped to have to write, but here I am anyway. As of July 12th, I will no longer be a fulltime employee of CVW Event Productions. I am not being fired, not being laid off, not dismissed, but my position is being eliminated due to shifting industry needs. I cannot fault anyone I work with at CVW for making this decision, as heartbreaking as it is, because I am logical enough to understand that in live event production, a full time editor is something of a novelty more than a necessity. I have proven myself adaptable, capable, and amenable to any and all aspects of this job that have required my service. To say I am heartbroken over this is an understatement. This job has been my life for the past 7 years and has seen me get married, buy a car, buy a house, and have a baby. I don't hold any animosity towards this company, the people running it, the people working for it, or the people who employ the services of CVW. We are, and will forever continue to be, a family. Now, onto my next steps. I will be freelancing while trying to find more stable work, whether that's in the video industry or I follow through on my desire to leave this industry altogether as I sought to do back in 2014 before getting pulled back in. I'll be operating as AME Postproduction for all future freelance work, though I don't have a website just yet. This isn't my first rodeo. I've been laid off from every position I've ever held, never for any cause other than budget cuts or shifting industry trends. It hurts a little more with my 10-month-old daughter at home, but this will afford me presumably some more time with her as she becomes more cognizant of the world around her. All that said, I am wrecked. If I had said I was all sunshine and rainbows, I would have said something is very wrong with me. I know I will land on my feet from this. It may take some time, and will certainly take a lot of hard work, but I know I'll come out of this on top. To my brothers and sisters at CVW, you haven't seen the last of me and you all know that. I know we say this a lot to each other but I've meant it every time...I love you all. We've been through hell on more than a few occasions and no one can ever take those experiences from us. You all are some of the best in the industry and I hope you've taken as much away from me as I have from all of you. Kick some ass, take names, and show the country why you're one of the premiere names in Live Event Production. And don't forget to have some fun along the way...
